Wii Fanboy Review: Wario Land: Shake It!

Gallery: Wario Land: Shake It
In short: yes.
But, before I start going on and on about how great the game is, let's discuss the problems. First of all, the game is incredibly linear. Aside from the missions in each level, which help to break up the monotony of just getting through each screen, there isn't much else here for you to discover. You meet challenges that are bested by Wario's abilities and you move on. Rinse and repeat.
The other problem I had with the game was its length. Now, I'm not one to get all up in arms if a game lasts only 8 hours, but I got through Wario Land: Shake It! in around 6. The game is comprised of 5 different areas. Just to give you an idea, the first area only has 5 stages, including the boss fight. Aside from those two issues, the rest of my time with the game was pure fun.
So what did I enjoy about the game? Well, the missions in each stage are fun to tackle. On top of that, the game has a lot of charm (you'll be laughing at Wario's antics, trust me), the visual presentation is spot-on (unless you're playing in 16:9, in which case you have to put up with ugly bars on either side of the screen) and the controls really work out well.
As I said during my time with the game at E3, the gesture-based controls aren't overused here at all. You shake the Wiimote to punch the ground, thus prying things loose in the environment or stunning enemies around you. You also shake the Wiimote to free coins from their pouch prisons throughout each level. And, finally, whenever you need to throw something or shoot missiles whilst in your underwater submarine, you just tile the Wiimote in order to aim. It's very basic and simple uses of the Wiimote's functionality, which perfectly suit the title.Visually, there isn't much that I can say that you don't already know. The animation work done by Production I.G. is impeccable. Wario moves so fluidly, the cutscenes look great and everything is just brought to life so well in the game. The areas in the game each have their own feel, thanks to inspired design, and it's one of the most visually-pleasing games I've ever enjoyed on my Wii.
There's no doubt about: Wario Land: Shake It! is a must-own title for the Wii. I just can't stress enough how fun this game is and how much fans of 2D titles, as well as platformers in general, will get a kick out of it. If you've got the coin, I suggest you invest in Wario's latest adventure.
Final score: 9/10

Did you find any of the secret stages? Did you collect all the treasure? You act like you're done with the game, but you haven't even played the best levels.
TWOO DEE @ Oct 2nd 2008 4:20PM
the best stages AREN'T the main ones?

i'll read the review in a second, but geez...9/10? Really? This game is boring and short. It's so underwhelming, in fact, that I'm considering selling it before I've even reached the fifth world.

Do not forget that the blog crowded with Mario fanbois. And the game is made specifically for them. Of course they are drooling over it.

look up at the url, bro - i was drooling, too...

I'm having trouble justifying the $50 price tag for eight hours of game play. I paid that much for "Elder Scrolls: Oblivion" and played it for six months. I hereby decree that all 2D side-scroller platform games for the Wii should be downloadable WiiWare games for $10.

*Whew* I'm glad we dont have to follow your decrees Michael, or else I'd be one sad costumer. I love the fact that this game is on a disc cause it just shows how 2-D games can still rock with the big boys. I personally love this game, its got so much character in it and its only short if you blaze through the levels without tresure hunting.

My only beef with it is thus: I fucking hate having to buy my access to the next world, after beating the boss. It artificially extends life.
Otherwise, i love what i've seen, and what i've yet to see. Still fighting my way through world 5

I really wish they would rethink their cover art. As if buying Nintendo games wasn't embarrassing enough.

You really need to get over yourself if embarrassment of buying Nintendo games is an issue for you.
TWOO DEE @ Oct 2nd 2008 8:52PM
you're obviously 13...how hectic could life be?

Here's a youtube advertisement for the game that is pretty cool: http://www.youtube.com/experiencewii?feature=pyv Just make sure to watch it with your browser maximized.

I really want to play this, but I can't get over the price tag when I'm only going to get a few hours out of it. Too bad Nintendo never drops the prices for their first party games, I'd love to pick this up for 30 or possibly 40, but considering Twilight Princess is still at 50 I don't see that happening anytime soon. Lost Winds and Megaman 9 are the ideal of new 2D games for the Wii.

No doubt about it, my all-time favorite game featuring Wario is WarioWare for the GameCube. There is nothing funnier than playing that game with a bunch of friends, especially if they've never played it before.

pick me!
BRAAAWWWWWWWLLLLLLL!

I love this game! Only one problem, though: it's too short.
