Jaws drop at first Phantasy Star Zero trailer
The first ever Phantasy Star Zero trailer is so damn hot that Gamekyo decided to reproduce it twice when uploading its video. That's fine with us, because we spent the first run-through simply rubbing our eyes at what we were seeing. Is this the best 3D yet on the DS? It's definitely a contender, with elaborate, screen-filling enemies and multiple characters legging it about on screen with no visible lag. It is, in a word, stunning.
Alas, there's one very small fly in the ointment: the game has been dated for December 25th in Japan, preventing us western importers from getting it as quickly as we'd like.

Pretty awsome, first day buy for me (if it manage to be localized)
leonus11 @ Oct 1st 2008 8:03PM
looks sweet! definitely buying this (if it comes to the US).
Risingsun @ Oct 1st 2008 8:07PM
Character customization, fluid action and animations, cool setting and designs. What is not to love?

I am definitely looking froward to this game after watching such a video O_O
Neil @ Oct 1st 2008 8:35PM
Very impressive....if they don't get too crazy with the touch controls this could end up being on of the best RPGs (whatever system) to come out in quite sometime.
jfrdricks @ Oct 1st 2008 8:57PM
The DS is basically a reworked N64 so I dont know why it wouldn't be able to produce 3D animation such as this.
Josh @ Oct 1st 2008 9:05PM
Hehe, it's all anime-ified because it's on DS.
Generic anime-ified.
:(
Well, only about three more months until we can know if it's any good or not!
iofthestorm @ Oct 1st 2008 11:54PM
Actually I think Phantasy Star kind of looks like that anyway. I played PSO on PC a while back and I think it looked about the same as this.
Zealot @ Oct 2nd 2008 12:20AM
Just wondering, and I don't mean this in any sort of negative or critical way, but what constitutes non-generic anime style? It's just that I hear the two words together a lot when describing particular games (usually RPGs) and I'd like some perspective from someone whose tastes are more discerning in this area than mine. Is it the common complaint of ridiculous hair/clothing or something else?
Josh @ Oct 2nd 2008 2:49AM
I'd really like to help you Zealot, but it's hard to explain. Hard to explain art, you know? It's just that, if you watch enough anime, certain faces, certain colors, things like that, you start noticing them all over the place, and soon enough, they become the "generic anime" style to you.
Zealot @ Oct 1st 2008 9:28PM
Mark my words, this will never make it out of Japan.
Risingsun @ Oct 1st 2008 9:40PM
why is that?
Zealot @ Oct 1st 2008 10:08PM
No actual logical reason, just pessimism. It looks great, therefore we won't get it.
Dash @ Oct 2nd 2008 12:07PM
Don't say that man. This has (reportedly) the closest to a MMO on DS sytem so far.
All others Phantasy Stars made to this side of the world (Genesis, PS2, Gamecube), with much smaller user base. Why not this one, with the DS selling so much.
The main barrier would be the online server, but if they did that for PS2 (which had a hard-to-work online structure, unlike today systems) they can do it for the DS.
scissors125 @ Oct 1st 2008 10:15PM
I can finally dive into the Phantasy Star Online series without having to buy a new console to do it.
I've always been curious about the series. I've been dying to play it.
Covarr @ Oct 1st 2008 10:41PM
I'd thought the DS could only do crappy hideous 3D like seen in Dragon Quest 4. Silly me.
TechNick @ Oct 1st 2008 11:30PM
You know I can't just help but get the feeling that these newer better looking DS games coming out just may be for the rumored new DS and their just being announced for the current DS.
Because something with the level of graphics like this and that newly announced Level 5 game "The Another World" just seem to nice to run on the current DS. I mean, why would such advancements in the graphics of DS games come so sudden??
eleefece @ Oct 2nd 2008 12:15AM
SWEET!!! me want!!!
unreal mccoy @ Oct 2nd 2008 12:19AM
That dragon battle brings back memories of PSO...
Dash @ Oct 2nd 2008 12:12PM
I liked the fact they included the chat messages, which are a great addition to the game. Pretty cool drawings (even though I know mine won't even come close to that quality)
Darlaten @ Oct 2nd 2008 8:06PM
Hmm, after so long, there is a game that looks this good on the DS? Impressive. Of course, it will be even more impressive if it get's released for NA. If not, its another pipe dream.
Rez Delnava @ Oct 2nd 2008 10:03PM
I hate to be the rain cloud here, but has anyone thought of how debilitated a PSO game would be when being forced to use a fail code--er... I mean friend code--to get online over WiFi? Hopefully the masterminds over at Sega have thought ahead about this and made a work-around (maybe a universal F-code that connects you to a main lobby like the original PSO had).
Sukashi @ Oct 3rd 2008 4:24PM
Looks great.
But honestly, after the abomination that was PSU...
