Rumor: Old Nintendo franchise getting revived on Wii
For most people who aren't high-ranking Nintendo executives, the air is presently thick with speculation over what Nintendo will be revealing at its forthcoming Media Summit. Not if you're Gamekyo.com, though. The French site knows for certain what is coming: a new Wii game based an old Nintendo franchise that "everyone is waiting for."
The Gamekyo story certainly sounds very sure of itself ("We can announce today that Nintendo will reveal a new game for the Wii during this event," reads the closing line), even though the article is entirely unsourced. While we're advising you take this rumor with a barrel -- nay, a truckload -- of salt, the prospect of an old Nintendo series being resurrected was too much for us to ignore. For its part, Nintendo issued a by-now-standard "We do not comment on rumor or speculation" to CVG, but that's not a denial, right?

Donkey kong ?
Sonic_13 @ Sep 30th 2008 7:38PM
No, it's not going to be Donkey Kong. It's going to be a franchise that hasn't had a game in a long time. While DK hasn't had a Wii game yet, he's had games on every other system.
Erik Stroud @ Sep 30th 2008 8:08PM
Donkey Kong was on Wii. It was Bongo Blast, one of the most horrible games ever.
Sonic_13 @ Sep 30th 2008 8:21PM
Ah, that's true. I forgot about Bongo Blast.
DonWii @ Sep 30th 2008 9:58PM
Barrel Blast. I wish it was Bongo Blast...
Neil @ Sep 30th 2008 10:09PM
I'd love to see a real Donkey kong Country game made for the wii....side scroller for sure.
Sonic_13 @ Sep 30th 2008 7:41PM
The three most obvious choices would be:
Kid Icarus
PilotWings
Punch Out!!
(If true) I wonder if it would be one of them or something completely unexpected.
Sonic_13 @ Sep 30th 2008 7:49PM
I know you do good work here Chris Greenough, but....are you thanking yourself?
"[Thanks, Chris!]"
:P
David Hinkle @ Sep 30th 2008 8:16PM
Chris talks to himself a lot, actually. We try to pretend it's what normal people do. :D
Chris Greenhough @ Sep 30th 2008 9:12PM
Somebody here needs to appreciate me.
* sob *
GatorSax2010 @ Sep 30th 2008 11:16PM
Ah, that's what I get for submitting tips under my real name.
Or am I Chris Greenhough in disguise???
TheOverlord#2 @ Sep 30th 2008 7:59PM
Probably Kid Icarus. If IGN's Matt C. is to be believed, then Nintendo probably decided that they could announce Kid Icarus at a later time. Thus brings us to Thursday.
ChaoticTails @ Sep 30th 2008 8:01PM
Hmm, I wonder if it's maybe Balloon Fighter? or Maybe Kid Icarus, or Ice Climber? Maybe Clu Clu Land will be revived!
This is exciting!
Mr Khan @ Sep 30th 2008 8:07PM
I ABSOLUTELY refuse to get hyped this time.
All i expect from this is a US date for Disaster. All else will simply be a pleasant surprise
Erik Stroud @ Sep 30th 2008 8:09PM
I know what you mean. All the excitement followed by dissapointment at E3 made me lose faith in Nintendo.
Mr Khan @ Sep 30th 2008 9:11PM
Ehh, that whole "we will be announcing core stuff at E3" was incorrectly paraphrased
But still, if you look at that BINGO card they had, what we were expecting was more than they ever have given us in one sitting
8-bit.artist @ Sep 30th 2008 10:35PM
a few pikmin 3 screens would be cool as well.
Drahken @ Sep 30th 2008 8:14PM
I know what it is. They’re going to make a new Mega Man game.
….What’s that? They what? Last week?
Patius @ Sep 30th 2008 8:22PM
Eh, an undocumented source may just mean someone off record who would lose their job if they were found out.
Like deep throat from Watergate, but only much less important in the grand scheme of things.
time @ Sep 30th 2008 9:02PM
Remember what happened at E3. Let's not let that happened again.
Don't get any hopes up.
Sonic_13 @ Sep 30th 2008 9:26PM
I remember E3...that's where they announced a bunch of cool new games, that they were making Pikmin 3, voice chat (Wii Speak), and superior new control functionality (MotionPlus)....
Let's hope they don't announce anything Thursday and Friday because I certainly don't want a repeat of E3 either.
time @ Sep 30th 2008 10:06PM
Read my comment again. I'm not saying anything about what Nintendo should do.
People were disappointed by E3, and no argument can change that. Sure, they did announce some cool stuff, but most of the things that people were hyped up for did not appear at Nintendo's conference.
Plus, you can never be certain about Pikmin 3. We have no launch window whatsoever, and we have no idea of the nature of the title. It's good news, but no reason for joy.
TWOO DEE @ Sep 30th 2008 10:21PM
how can we not be certain about a new pikmin installment when it's already been anounced?
stop being such a debbie downer
Sonic_13 @ Sep 30th 2008 10:29PM
You're right. I did misread and misinterpret your comment. Sorry.
I read so many comments (here and otherwise) about people saying nothing good came of E3, so I kinda jumped right on that when you weren't actually talking about that.
People's hypes do ruin things. People expect such outlandish things sometimes that when they are not announced, people get downright ticked off.
Everyone would be better off if they didn't have high hopes as you said, and just let the conference happen (and hopefully be surprised and excited for what is announced).
Just look at the E3 bingo card we had here. 24 spaces. Even at the best conferences, 24 things won't be announced. Now the options presented on the card were admittedly reasonable (as opposed to some predictions I saw), but even by merely presenting 24 options is going to leave more than a few people disappointed.
8-bit.artist @ Sep 30th 2008 10:38PM
what cool new games did they announce at e3? wii sports 2? wii music? animal crossing? fuck outta here. pikmin 3 was announced and thats it. wii speak is going to be lame and not many people care about motion plus.
time @ Sep 30th 2008 10:49PM
I was guilty of getting hyped up for E3 as well. I'm trying not to get hyped for this too, but I'm sorta failing. These news stories get me too excited :P
And about Pikmin not being certain: I used weird wording for that. I know we're getting a new Pikmin, but it's not certain that it's good news. We don't know anything about the game other than that it's a part of the Pikmin franchise.
Voted up for debbie downer.

Nintendo's Media Summit in Japan is Wednesday and Thursday, no? And it's already Wendesday ~noon in Japan...Maybe we'll be hearing some good news during this North American night?
Or will we have to wait until Thursday for some simultaneous Japan and North America announcements? (Thursday being the second and last day of the Japanese Nintendo Media Summit, and the first day of the two-day North American Nintendo Media Summit)
I just want to know when I can expect all this Media. ^_^
Chris Greenhough @ Oct 1st 2008 12:55AM
The Media Summit will be taking place on October 2nd and 3rd (Thursday and Friday).
Japan is 13 hours ahead of EST, so if Nintendo kicks things off at 9am on Thursday, the earliest we'll hear stuff is by 8pm EST on Wednesday. Naturally, we'll be waiting to blog anything juicy as soon as the event starts!
Sonic_13 @ Oct 1st 2008 4:45PM
I believe I read somewhere that the summit starts at 1:30pm in Japan, so the earliest we'll hear stuff is about 12:30am EST.
Josh @ Oct 1st 2008 4:50PM
Ugh, I have classes tomorrow, so I can't stay up late. :(
Josh @ Oct 1st 2008 4:55PM
Nevermind, this sounds very convincing:
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/01/report-new-multimedia-ds-announced-tonight/
So I'm going to stay up to see the new DS model. Joystiq, DO NOT be late in your blogging tonight.
Atlantis1982 @ Sep 30th 2008 11:26PM
I think we are long overdue for a Pilotwings game.
ZombiePikmin @ Sep 30th 2008 11:28PM
Please be Ice Climbers! Hmmm 3D no handpainted wait 8-bit perhaps. Who cares it would be great! But i thought it was gonna be announced at this thing. . . Its a letter then a Number like K7. phenylketonurics @ Oct 1st 2008 12:51AM
Man, it's all business being a video game consumer. NO JOKES GUYS.
Um, let's go Adventure Island! Wait, it's about a Nintendo franchise ...
Let's go Mario Paint!
Just_a_guy @ Oct 1st 2008 12:55AM
i want an F-Zero GX style game
oh I'd also like to see kid icarus
but f zero gx is my top game that i'm looking forward to if it exists
Sisyphus @ Oct 1st 2008 1:30AM
Probably Star Fox.
hellhammer @ Oct 1st 2008 1:44AM
A few months back I attempted to pre-order Pilot Wings Wii from Gamestop.com and was never able to complete my order.
I just now googled it, just for the heck of it, and it still shows up, but no longer on the GS webpage itself. I don't know what the deal is.
Anyway, if we're getting anything 'classic', I want Punch-Out!!. Bad.
MBJ @ Oct 1st 2008 4:58AM
Rad Racer Rebirth!
Nicholas Tam @ Oct 1st 2008 8:36AM
My bet's on Kirby. While we're speculating on old franchises, let's not forget about the ones that weren't on a twenty-year hiatus, and which we knew were in development.
Indiana Hoosier @ Oct 1st 2008 9:30AM
I would love to see a new Pilotwings, Star Fox, or F-Zero game. I have spent countless hours playing all three.
Lanceh @ Oct 1st 2008 9:53AM
The fact that it's an "old" franchise being "revived" makes me think it won't be the Wii F-Zero I so desperately crave. Last F-Zero was on the GameCube, after all.
So I'm betting Kid Icarus.
...maybe Clu Clu Land lololololololololololol
Ezekial @ Oct 2nd 2008 2:01AM
This wouldn't exactly be a revival but...F-Zero? =D
Ethd @ Oct 2nd 2008 3:03PM
STARTROPICS! WHO'S WITH ME?!
...
Um... I'm gonna go dig out my old NES, mmkay?
