Mega Man 9's press kit inspires more NEStalgia
Publishers don't normally show off glamour shots of their press asset discs, but such discs are rarely packaged like the one for Mega Man 9 is. The disc comes packaged in a reproduction NES cartridge, which comes with the Mega Man 9 "boxart" -- now on a real box. The back of the box even features the "Captain Commando" character (before he was redesigned for the SNES/arcade game) found on Capcom's early NES games like Gun.Smoke and Trojan -- and Mega Man, obviously. The details are what make the whole thing perfect.
Good news for non-press types: Capcom is considering selling a limited quantity of 200 or so online! In addition, the Mega Man 9 shirts will be available for sale soon. Get your money ready! Head past the break to see the terrible secret of the NES cartridge.

If you had been able to play that NES Cartridge, I think I would've found one and done some real retro gaming. However, that is not the case and my dreams are shattered.

HOTLINKING NOT ALLOWED!
Hahaha!

what they should have done is make the NES cartridge box a reader with pins on the bottom so you could play it on the NES
Corey @ Sep 16th 2008 4:59PM
I was just thinking about that. If they had done some kind of CE where you got not only the download version, but an actual playable NES cart, it would have been the collector's edition of the decade.

I like the "9.99" price tag on the box.
Seriously though, working cartridge or no, this branding is GENIUS. I hope more games do this.

It would have been sooooo perfect if that cartridge would have worked.

Whoo! I called this a while ago. :) (It's in my comments but, sadly, Wii doesn't allow copypasta :( )
And...DAMN...200 only?! I'm gonna put the site in my favorites and check everyday...they will sell like hotcakes.(And then people'll put them up on eBay for x4 the price...)

Also, JC, how much would you be willing to sell your press kit for? :P
matmccoy @ Sep 16th 2008 6:55PM
Ahh Captain Commando... With your awesome laser guns, pimpin' chains, and impossibly starched collar.

One addition: they are considering adding a voucher for downloading the actual game with this bundle. They only mention supporting 360 and PS3, but surely the Wii would be included in that deal, right? (I guess the Wii doesn't have a real voucher system, but the gift system might work for this.)
Vincent @ Sep 17th 2008 10:40AM
I wish that was a working cartridge. My NES is still plugged in and working. It would've been nice to purchase a new cartridge that didn't originate from eBay no matter the cost.
TomSkib @ Sep 17th 2008 11:42AM
Simply beyond cool.
dukemeiser @ Oct 4th 2008 12:24AM
Considering the ridiculous amount of money it would cost to produce only 200 working NES carts, I'm not surprised they opted out. It would have been the coolest thing ever though.
