Lost cache of Virtual Boys discovered in Dubai
Dubai is like the most magical place in the world. They're trying to build underwater hotels, spinning buildings and now they apparently have open worm holes that lead back in time. That's the only explanation for over 1,000 Virtual Boys being discovered in a warehouse in the Rashidia area there by a business owner. It looks like you can toss out that DeLorean you got on eBay.38-year-old electrical engineer Mohammed Omran was stoked to hear of the new surge in product, snatching one up as soon as he could. As you read this, he's probably eye-deep in red tennis players and other headache-inducing sprites. "I was chasing it in all the shops and all the markets in Dubai Khour, but everything was always vanished," he said. "It's not an easy system to find."
That probably has to do with it making you feel like your eyeballs are melting after 10 minutes of gameplay.

I must be the only one who actually misses this system. At the same time I'm glad the wii didn't suffer the same fate.
MowDownJoe @ Sep 15th 2008 10:36PM
I enjoyed renting it at Blockbuster... never owned one. I did like that one Wario game. I was always kinda disappointed that after the first Wario Land and that, they didn't stick with the hat-based power-ups.
zchry @ Sep 16th 2008 7:51PM
My favorite was the hat that made your head basically a dragon.
I still have that game. I want a new VB so bad so that I can play it. You don't even know.
Sonic_13 @ Sep 15th 2008 9:48PM
So how can I get one?

The World cache continues to draw the attention of people from all over the world. Everyone seems to find this man-made land feature appealing, interesting, educational and worthwhile. I don’t use the word “awesome” too often, but this is cache item is truly awesome. It is an object that should be of special and significant interest to every geocacher.

Dude, the Virtual Boy games had some seriously gnarly tunes. I'd kill for the Golf soundtrack, haha.
Red Alarm is a gem, though.
vidGuy @ Sep 16th 2008 12:34AM
I've never noticed how much the Virtual Boy controller inspired the GameCube controller!
Nietha @ Sep 16th 2008 4:23AM
I've been meaning to sell my Virtual Boy on eBay or Craig's List... guess there's no rush now!
zchry @ Sep 16th 2008 7:52PM
How much? I'd seriously be interested, if it's a decent price. Is it in good condition?
Amiculi @ Sep 16th 2008 4:39AM
Ah man, the Virtual Boy was a great device in my book.
I still have mine, picked it up after the system crashed on the market for a sum total of around $50 including almost the entire library of games, all new.
Though, that awkward stand it uses broke, I need a new one and the local Gamestop doesn't seem to stock them.
zchry @ Sep 16th 2008 7:53PM
Have you tried making your own? I'm sure you could make yourself a nice one.
I'd like to see the mod community go at these. Wouldn't a Virtual Boy that matched the Wii be fantastic?
Amiculi @ Sep 16th 2008 8:00PM
Making your own would be easier said than done mostly due to the way it connects to the system. The clip that actually holds it in place is the part that broke.
Though it would be quite nice to make your own, something more comfortable and sturdy than what it came with.
As far as a mod goes, I've always wished someone would make something akin to those monitor glasses you can get, usually advertised for watching movies privately in public places or the like, that plugged into a separate unit that housed the actual Virtual Boy hardware. The system probably would've done far better if it had been built like that in the first place instead of a big unwieldy unit you stick your face in.
Oh, and with a color other than red...
Quite frankly, I'd like to see Nintendo attempt full on color with stereoscopic 3d now, like the Nintendo ON or something, for those of you who remember that fiasco.
zchry @ Sep 17th 2008 6:46PM
I remember that fiasco.
I imagine the glasses to a mod being wireless, and the colors being black and Wii blue or something. White, while prettiest, would kill you. Except on the outside of the console, where it would rock.
I'd especially love it if the VB was released on the Virtual Console, with the classic controller and some sort of glasses. Then I wouldn't need to buy a new system.
And yeah, they should try full color down the road, though after the failure of the VB I wouldn't make it my main console.
Christian Walters @ Sep 16th 2008 8:29AM
Man, I too love the Virtual Boy. Ive got 2 complete systems that I bought for 5 bucks a peice brand new, plus ohh, 12 or so games from the US, and 5 or 6 from Jap'n. Very cool system, and Red Alarm and VB Wario Land FTW!
Brittany @ Sep 16th 2008 8:58AM
My old roommate is convinced that the Virtual Boy is the reason why he needs glasses today...
Timerider @ Sep 16th 2008 11:32AM
I want one. Gimme now.
How could a thousand be "lost" and not found til now?
R_Fusion @ Sep 16th 2008 2:35PM
I remember I tried one when I was a kid, I thought that was the best of the best. :p
maattp @ Sep 16th 2008 3:19PM
The kotaku article clearly says 100 virtual boy systems. Not 1000. Big difference.
zchry @ Sep 16th 2008 7:50PM
When I was little, I threw mine out.
BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE.
I've been tracking them down on Ebay, trying to get one for so long. I'm not paying more than $60, though.
Pinachina @ Sep 17th 2008 11:38AM
That was one of my favorite systems ever! Wario Land was the best of the Wario adventure games that has ever come out, plus Tetris, Panic Bomber... Don't even get me started on how hardcore I got when it came to Red Alarm. I'd turn out all of the lights, put in some headphones, and put the depth to the highest setting and play for hours.
I'm pretty sure I went through 3 pairs of glasses because of that thing.. Too bad G-Zero never came out, or I'd had probably gone through 4 more pairs!
