DS Daily: Re-Quest
Next week, Dragon Quest IV hits, bringing with it the possibility of the massive franchise finally taking off for real in the US in a way it hasn't since the original Dragon Warrior. Here, Final Fantasy is bigger, but in Japan, this is the real IV.Have you been following Chapters of the Chosen? Are you interested in playing along with the adventures of Torneko Taloon and the rest of the cast? If so, will this be the first Dragon Quest for you? How about the first Dragon Quest IV? Did you get it back on the NES?

This is from my own preview of DQIV on my site, PlayingWithMyWeiner.com.
"I love role-playing games. The first RPG I ever played was Dragon Warrior - the American version of Enixs (no Square merger yet) Dragon Quest. From the moment I saw my first blue slime, I was hooked. My folks couldnt afford to get me Dragon Quests II and III, but on Christmas morning 1992, I opened my shiny new Dragon Warrior IV.
Mr. Brando welcomes you to the game.
My Christmas Morning.
This game was amazing! It came with a detailed strategy guide full of art and pictures of how my magical weapons and armor really looked. It featured chapters, 5 of them, each with different characters! Some of these characters, sisters Mara and Nara, were girls, and they werent in another castle, they were right in front of me! (My mother nearly had a cow when she saw me fan fighting the dog one day with a cheap Chinese paper fan.)
Even then I knew the game wasnt perfect. There were level grinds, particularly in the chapter where you play as the merchant (7 swords and 7 suits of armor to be farmed via random encounters, ugh!), but it was all worth it when I took control of my first ever airship.
I SWORE this was what I looked like.
So yeah, Im excited about Dragon Quest IVs DS re-release."

Dragon Quest VIII was too stale and dated. I can't imagine how IV must feel.
Mr. Mee @ Sep 13th 2008 2:39PM
Dragon Quest VIII was awesome in my opinion. It had new-school graphics and sound quality but everything else was hardcore old-school and I loved that about DQ VIII. Looking forward to DQ IV, V, VI, and IX. The DQ series are all about bout old-school RPG formula anyways, but it's obviously not for everyone.

You gotta give it one thing, you rarely see anyone with feelings of indifference towards it. I thought it was the most charming RPG made since the 16 bit era.
That said, I'm buying two copies of DQIV when it comes out stateside just to show support (as best as my means allow). I'm playing the European version at the moment and loving every moment.

DQ IV is one of my favorite RPGs ever. I could never get into any FF game, but the DQ 1-4 series captivated me.

I have my forty bucks ready.

I played Dragon Warrior on the NES and then revisited it on Dragon Warrior I & II on the Gameboy Color. I also played 3 on the Gameboy Color. I paid off DQIV last night. I cannot wait.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, really.
I mean, I liked DQ8. It was traditional in many aspects, for better or for worse, but it had a certain charm and actually had a worldmap which you could physically fly around. (And I didn't really realize how much I missed that until it showed up again.) And admittedly, I picked it up really cheap, so that somewhat helped in the liking...my feelings might be different if I had paid full price for admission.
Conversely, though, I loathed DQ7 with the passion of a thousand burning suns. I just...no. No.
So...yeah. I liked DQ8 enough to be tentatively enthused about DQ9. But I hated DQ7 that I'm not sure how I feel about DQ1-6. It could be good. I've got a better idea of what to expect. I'm not sure if I want to find out for sure, though.

Like some other people here, my first RPG was Dragon Warrior for the NES. I also played DW2, but then lost track of the series for a while. I enjoyed DQ8 quite a bit. The battle system got very repetitive, but I loved the exploration, and the fact that there was no automap, so you really didn't know what was up ahead around the next bend.
I'm anxiously awaiting DQ4 and the other upcoming DS games, since I've never played any of them.

I wasn't a very hardcore gamer as a child, so I was first introduced to DQ via Dragon Warrior III for GBC that was re-released.
Although, the story felt bland, i loved the monster designs and the fact that you made your team in whatever way you wanted (think Etrian Odyssey). But the best part of all was the fact that I could FINALLY play as a female character. I think that really made me appreciate the DQ franchise. The fact that I like traditional RPGs has also added to my enjoyment of DWIII. I'm pretty sure if you like old school RPGs, you will like DQIV.
So my point being that I'm definitely looking forward to DQIV, especially since I haven't played the game yet. Let's hope the DQ franchise takes off now ^^

this game is one of the best rpg's on the ds. I've imported the japanese version of the game, and it was just the pure awesome.
I must say that I somewhat enjoy the DQ series more than the FF series. Sure, the FF's are cool and all, and I played almost all of them, but the DQ series is just a tad better IMHO. You will enjoy DQ IV. No, its not like DQ VII, it actually has a continuing story.

I pre-ordered this game months ago.
I've only ever played DQVIII, and loved it, and I'm really looking forward to DQIV, as I really love older games. (Remember Final Fantasy III DS? I'm hoping for more of that.)

Dragon Quest 4 on the DS is amazing. It's too bad that the DQ4 DS US localization is amazingly terrible. Sure, a lot of time and posibly effort was put into ruining the characters and traditions that the old players are used to, but it was pure lazyness that SE had to pull a NamcoBandai and completely remove the party speak feature for the US version, not to mention censoring certain parts of the game.
For those of you not familiar with it, the party speak feature let you talk amongst your party in the game, rewarding you with hints on where to go next, and really fleshing out the characters of the game in a way difficult to read accents never could. And it's completely absent from the english version of the game.

DragonWarrior too was one of the first RPG's I played as a child, and although I never again touched the series since this version I have thoroughly enjoyed this expirence so far. Im about 6 hours into the game on chapter 3, and its kept me hooked the whole time. although I lean more towards Final Fantasy 4, this is a great remake for the DS with the numeral 4 in it.
My biggest problem with this game is how it handles enemys, especially when you have multiple enemys of the same type. It bunches the multiple enemys as 1 entity, thus you're party members will randomly target enemys within that bunch, I wish there was more control of this due to the fact there youre most powerful warrior will strike an already weakened foe on the first strike, letting a weaker mage strike an enemy with fill health that otherwise would have killed the weakened enemy, and youre stronger warrior can kill one of thoes enemys in a single strike. Although this hasnt effect me so far (i havent had all party members die in a battle yet, and have only had to flee 2 times) it is just an annoyance. That is my only gripe, otherwise this is a fantastic game.

I have never played a Dragon Quest by myself.. and I"m ready to jump into this one..
as soon as I beat Etrian's Odyssey II (which should take me another 3-4 weeks) :(
