DS Daily: Tilting through Tony Hawk

Did you play Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam for Wii? If so, it may help determine how you feel about the latest handheld Tony Hawk title, which will include an accelerometer add-on for the GBA slot. We don't know much else about Tony Hawk's Motion other than a) it's a skateboarding game (mostly) and b) there'll be tilt controls. Having played the aforementioned Wii game, however, this blogger, at least, is somewhat intrigued. How are you feeling? Did you play Downhill Jam, and does that make a difference?

It must be said that I skipped Proving Ground, but did have a blast with Downhill Jam, though I didn't think I would, at all.

Hm, can't say i've played it. I don't play much Wii, my heart lies with DS.

I hope that the motion control can be used on existing games though, or maybe that homebrew developers hack existing roms maing them playable with it on an R4, etc.

I admit to never having played Downhill Jam on any system, but I must say that if you've never played Proving Ground, you absolutely must secure a DS copy and play it. Critically, it fared far better than any of its console counterparts and, in my personal opinion, is the new standard for handheld Tony Hawk games. Smooth controls, a bevy of challenges and game modes, and graphics that are, without exaggeration, Phantom Hourglass/Tales of Innocence/Moon/etc-tier. I dare GTA: Chinatown Wars to have more detailed urban environments than THPG when it comes out.

That said, I'm not sold on Tony Hawk's Motion yet. Considering that accuracy is so important for completing specific objectives or accumulating huge scores in a short amount of time in any Tony Hawk game, I just can't see a system that involves partially obscuring a clear view of the screens each time a trick is executed working as well as a traditional control scheme.
