Video comparison shows Dead Rising taken down by Hitman
So yeah, we're not even touching this. Not with a twenty-foot damn pole. Some user at GameTrailers compiled this video, featuring a comparison between Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop and the PlayStation 2's Hitman: Blood Money. The point? To show up the supposed lack of NPC zombies in the former, by comparing it to the achievements of a two-year-old game on a technologically inferior system.
The Dead Rising footage used is a touch selective (we've seen screens with a far greater number of zombies), but like we say: we're staying out of this. It isn't going to end well.

Well it the zombies in hitman didn't really do anything but run away so their wasnt any script codes but in dead rising they actually have AI.
andy @ Aug 26th 2008 11:02PM
Ok. Hitman AI: People run away. Dead Rising AI: People lumber towards you. What AI do zombies need? Zombies are inherently unintelligent. Also the "zombies" in hitman aren't zombies they're just people at a giant street party (mardi gras?)
Mike Sylvester @ Aug 26th 2008 11:03PM
There's also Ikusagami for the PS2, which had thousands (that's right, THOUSANDS) of onscreen NPCs, but like your example, they're essentially lobotomized blades of grass for you to chop down like Link passing the time between quests.

solidslack @ Aug 27th 2008 12:02AM
I was going to say the same thing OP, the AI of the random Mardi Gras people on that level were EXTREMELY basic. They just ran if shot, you could wave a gun in their face and they wouldn't do anything. Only the guards, certain important NPCs, and targets on that level had the standard-complex AI. Unfair comparison but I agree that Dead Rising for the Wii has had it's zombie number greatly reduced.
Also to the guy who put this on the front page, wtf? You post this flamebait crap and then say you're staying out of this?
samfish @ Aug 27th 2008 12:10AM
The AI for the zombies shouldn't be THAT much more advanced, especially for a system as powerful as the Wii.
What? The zombies kinda lumber towards and when you get close enough, they make an attacking motion.
There's absolutely no reason Capcom can't do better. Unfortunately, they're porting the game with only a 10-man team and they're on a tiny budget.
comtar @ Aug 27th 2008 11:23AM
You have a point, I understand that in Hitman the NPC crowd was pretty much a one hit point, mingle, run, or die crowd with dirt basic AI, but I think maybe the point perhaps might be, why can't this game do the same? Why can't we have say... triple the zombie count currently... but have maybe 1 out of every 3 be an actual threat with an enhanced (or perhaps normal) AI with health stats and damage meters.
Some programming could also make it possible to have "replacement" zombies, where once a superior AI zombie goes down, a dumb zombie gets replaced with a new superior AI zombie. Kinda like the Agents in Matrix... kill one, it just jumps into the body of another. I'm sure there's a way to do it.
I'm not expect this game to have the 1000s of zombies of the regular game, but 10 on screen is a bit low for the point of this game.
Brian @ Aug 26th 2008 11:22PM
haaa this is why i feel bad for wii only owners
i have one but only for first party games and the few that come out 3rd party which manage to be good
but also have 360 for real gaming. much better
Chris @ Aug 26th 2008 11:25PM
I do get sick of people 'under' developing games for the Wii. Nintendo even does it sometimes, at least as far as I can tell. Weren't we supposed to be getting a system that was AT LEAST as powerful as the original Xbox? I mean, people called the Wii "two Gamecubes duct-taped together," so where are my graphics that are twice as good as the Gamecube? I'm a HUGE Nintendo fan, but I'm starting to smell something.
Sam @ Aug 26th 2008 11:38PM
I feel your pain man. I figured since they were cutting back on graphics, they would at least have a decent engine under the hood. I wish they had thought a little bit more about the rest of the system instead of just the controller. I don't care how big the damn thing is, it's not like i'm going to be moving it around alot.
beaus27 @ Aug 26th 2008 11:29PM
I am speechless, just speechless, at the "laziness" of Capcom's attempt with this port.
leonus11 @ Aug 26th 2008 11:51PM
@Brian
if you dislike the Wii and highly perfer the 360 over the Wii then why are you even here? you and your ilk act as if what you say makes any difference! do us all a favor (as well as yourself) and get a life! seriously don't you have anything better to do then go to other fanboy sites and talk a load of crap?
deaddays @ Aug 27th 2008 11:48AM
There's nothing wrong with expecting a little more from a console you love that you KNOW can do better. Seriously, I love my Wii but even I have to admit that over half the time they're just being lazy.
And the "if you don't like it go somewhere else" logic is just plain defeatist.
Michael Bastianelli @ Aug 27th 2008 12:08AM
I thought I recall when playing Dead Rising.. the amount of zombies increase further into the game.
So it is possible we are only seeing screenshots of the first chapters of the game before the big horde of zombies come in.
rouroniJohn @ Aug 27th 2008 6:33AM
im not too exited about this game either way...i got a wii because i thought it was original and would lend itsself to original games not ports...Except for RE:4
Feba @ Aug 27th 2008 7:59AM
And... have you already completely forgotten about the fact that Capcom has said they are working to add in more zombies? How about waiting until we get the game, and Capcom says "Yeah, this is how many we managed to put on the screen" before you start complaining?
Capcom has been one of the greatest companies for Wii owners, both in terms of ports (RE4, Okami) and original games (Zack and Wiki, and to a lesser extent Umbrella Chronicles and We Love Golf). Give them a bit of credit and patience before you discount their efforts.
Orion @ Aug 27th 2008 8:33AM
I totally agree. I think it's funny that you guys are getting in such a puff when this game isn't even coming out anytime soon.
I know it's a port, but that doesn't mean that it's going to be quick and dirty. I'm pretty sure that if they could make RE:4 that much of a drastic improvement over it's GC and PS2 bretheren, it can make this just as nice.
And personally, coming from the company that did Umbrella Chronicles (in my opinion, the prettiest and most enjoyable light gun game on Wii), I have no doubts that this game will impress WHEN IT'S DONE.
I mean if this was being done by Atari, I'd join in ... but I can't remember the last time Capcom let us down on Wii.
samfish @ Aug 27th 2008 9:02AM
The problem is, the game comes out in like 2 months. The graphics aren't going to be much better and, according to some of the guys on Capcom's forums, the 100 zombie target hasn't been met yet. They don't have much time left to get this right, and at this point, it's a pretty safe bet that we're in the 'what you see is what you get' phase.
At any rate, I personally don't really mind the reduced zombie count. But the removal of the 'use anything as a weapon' aspect is most likely unforgivable to me. THAT is what Dead Rising was REALLY about.
Still, though, I'll definitely play the game and give it a shot. If the gameplay is like RE4, then it can't be THAT bad.
psyborg @ Aug 27th 2008 8:37AM
Does the Hitman game take place in a large open sandbox type area? Because that should be taken into consideration.
MaxRadical @ Aug 27th 2008 9:07AM
I'm not sure about that one.
But State of Emergency on the PS2 managed it just fine.
magicmoo @ Aug 27th 2008 8:41AM
"I thought I recall when playing Dead Rising.. the amount of zombies increase further into the game."
I was about to say the same thing. I'm pretty sure the Wii can handle a lot more zombies on screen and that's probably what we'll see.
I'm more concerned about the fact that they apparently removed the whole dismembering caused by your attacks. That was definitely a big part of the fun, at least for me (considering the fact that you were able to slice/smash/drill/kick/shoot zombies with about anything you could find).
While killing zombies was definitely a great pastime on the 360 version, it might get quickly boring on the Wii one and end up being more of a chore than anything to get through the game.
CJLopez @ Aug 27th 2008 12:13PM
I'm still waiting to actually play it.
I don't trust any of those comparison videos, neither all the trolls
I just laugh at 360 owners who has already played the game and telling how gimped down the game is with so few zombies on screen while they now how zombies increase with time pass.
360 fanboys are mad because Dead rising is no longer a 360 exclusivity, even though the games are kinda different, the concept is the same, and now they know how PS3 fanboys feelt with the announcement of FFXIII on 360
Crustin @ Aug 27th 2008 1:37PM
I don't know which game I'm more excited about... Dead Rising or Wii Music!
ChromeAlchemist @ Aug 27th 2008 2:01PM
u kno wt...i agree with wt people are saying about the whole it being unfinished thing IF the release date is far away. if it isnt, then i just hope to god this isnt a quick dirty port, because everyone knows the wii could do a lot better. if it was gamecube, then fair enuff, but this is wii, with the amount of zombies on screen they could easily make this look like RE4 ffs. if wii is supposed to be twice as powerful as gamecube, then capcom are being lazy if the final product looks anything like this.
btw, did people really say wii was 2 gamecubes duct taped together? if so, isnt 360 just two xboxes duct taped together, and ps3 2 n a half ps2s and a blu ray player?
ChromeAlchemist @ Aug 27th 2008 2:03PM
P.S like chris implied, this was obviously did by a fanboy of another console, so we really will have to wait and see how this goes
guttertalk @ Aug 27th 2008 2:06PM
Yeah, shooting the backs of dozens of zombies just looks like soooo much more fun.
Looks like brain-dead gaming to me.
Give me a game like Far Cry (PC) on the Wii: a few enemies that require some strategic combat.
CJLopez @ Aug 27th 2008 4:10PM

Is not as good as Crysis, but, its good to kill some time
Kyle Z @ Aug 27th 2008 2:32PM
Eidos's programming team has always been top notch. Every single Hitman game has had 0 load time, tons of characters on screen, and advanced physics and graphics engines.
Good programming/porting = good engine
Lazy programming/porting = bad engine
DasFoote @ Aug 27th 2008 3:33PM
This is actually a new kind of port for Capcom. While RE4 and Okami were very good, they were actually ported upward to a system that has twice (or something like that) the processing power.
Then there is the problem with Dead Rising where you have less than half (I think) the power. But I do think that most of that processing power needs to go to the high definition graphics. I can only imagine the pain in the ass it must be to port some thing down.
What do we cut? We don't have the extra processing for physics. We can't buffer extra information to a hard drive. I love my Wii, but sometimes the drawbacks bug me.
I'm sure it will be a good game in it's own right, but it will be lacking in comparison.
