Space Invaders Get DLC overload

Our worst suspicions are confirmed. Space Invaders Get Even! will cost us weak, pathetic earthlings more than we initially expected. While the game always sounded like a bargain at 500 Wii Points, the hidden threat of extra downloadable content loomed at the back of our minds. Three stage packs released today in Japan (along with the game), each priced at 500 Wii Points, and bringing the total cost of Space Invaders Get Even! to -- gnaaargh! -- 2,000 Wii Points. Siliconera notes that the main title is "a short game."
We should have known all along, really. After all, this is Square Enix we're talking about here, renowned admirers of DLC. Needless to say, we'll yield and buy it all. Our defences have already succumbed toa hail of missiles the game's relentless charm offensive.

Hah. Nice. Oh, and I love how each stage pack is the price of the game itself. It's one thing to add a few small things for a little amount of extra money on day one, like My Life As A King, but for day one DLC to multiply the price of the game and be most of the content? That's just wrong.

It was originally a retail game. It got chopped up for WiiWare.
Total space with all of the downloads is 600+ blocks.
$20 is still better than retail, and you have a choice of not downloading the other levels.

600 blocks!? Uggh. I'm not keen on the Wii cleaning I'll have to undertake for that.

I don't see a problem here, you buy the game for 5 bucks and anytime it gets boring you can tack on another 5 bucks for a bunch of new levels.
Also if you don't fall in love with it you're only out five bucks.
Seriously what is the downside of this structure?

Exactly, I'm encouraged by this setup. Its a new avenue for bargain "retail" games without having to dump $20 off the bat. A game doesn't have to be bad to only be $20 in retail, but it does make marketing it hard, unless it's just shovelware and you pile it onto the stores. The Wii has a fantastic pinball collection (Williams Collection) that only retailed for $20. Worth every penny.
