DS Daily: Armchair sales warrior
Every month, we post the new NPD numbers detailing the sales of game hardware in the US. We spend a lot of time talking about Japanese sales as well. Typically, the DS is at the top of the sales list, though it is occasionally overtaken by the Wii, or, in Japan, the Monster Hunter machine.When the DS does top a sales list, does it inspire pride? Does it make you happy to be on the winning team? Is it like watching the stock market, except instead of making money, you're earning shares in the DS's popularity? Or does it excite you for more practical reasons, like the fact that continued DS sales probably means that new games will be coming out for the current DS for a while?

Strangely, yes. Mostly I'm happy that the DS will get the developer support due to popularity, and thus more games for me.

This and only this. This is the only good reason to get excited over sales figures. Well, that and actually making money from it. :P

I don't really spend a lot of time thinking about whether or not other people enjoy the same things I do, as that is completely unrelated to whether or not I enjoy something. So no, I don't really care about sales charts.

I don't really care, but it's nice to know the DS is popular, because then it attracts more developers and thus gives me more games. I'm pretty sure Disgaea would not have moved to the DS if not for its popularity. Nippon Ichi never made something for a Nintendo system, but now we have 3 DS games to look forward to from the developer.

It's something ephemeral, purely psychological, but its definitely there.
There are, of course, material benefits for owning a winning console/handheld, but that is unrelated to the feelings of pride
