Mega Man 9's item shop is the future of Mega Man's past
Though it's intended as a sort of continuation of Mega Man 2, Mega Man 9 still manages to sneak in some elements from the later games. The item store is full of things that have shown up in Mega Man 6 and later, which is fine! We like later Mega Man games, and the idea of synthesizing the best elements from the whole series is a sound one. Plus some of this stuff is really helpful.
You can use the bolts found throughout the levels to buy these items. Just for reference, we saw several of these bolts in the E3 demo levels, but couldn't reach any of them. So good luck! You can probably figure out what they all are from looking, but we'll describe them for you as well after the break.

- 1up: well, okay, you know what that is.
- Energy tank: stores life energy.
- Mystery tank: stores life energy and weapon energy.
- Eddie Call: summons Eddie to give Mega Man a random item.
- Beat Call: summons Beat the bird to attack.
- Energy Balancer: Sends weapon energy pickups to the weapon with the least energy.
- Guard Up: Cuts damage in half.
- Shock Guard: Allows Mega Man to step on spikes once without dying.
- Costume: The description on the website says that Roll wants to show you her favorite costume. Probably allows you to play as Roll -- or Mega Man in drag, who happens to look just like Roll.
- Hair Style Book: Gives Mega Man a new hairstyle. We're guessing it's something on the order of "Not a Helmet"

What about Rush?
I loved fusing him with Megaman (And Bass with Treble in MM8.5)
I'm glad Beat's there, and same with Eddie, but Rush is where mah heart is!
I'd also love to take on Dr. Wily using a Roll dress/costume and a weird haircut.

they said rush is in the game, no worries

You start off with Rush Coil.
You might get something like the Super Adapter later on (like as an item hidden in one or more of the stages).

I actually hate the shops as they were implimented in past Mega Man games. They always offered power-ups and items that were too good, good to the point where they made the power ups you get from the bosses almost useless by comparison.
However, costume change and hairstyle options = WIN.
Here's hoping the other outfits are from other Capcom games. Mega Man in a Zack costume, with a matching Wiki outfit for Rush would be so choice.

Wait wait wait, WT***k!!!!
Megaman 9 is a continuation of of Megaman 2 or sort of?!!!!!!
I was expecting it ot be like the one chapter that would calrify a little over the plot hole there betwen this series and X series!!!!
I'm still believing this is not true, i mean, the intro video gives us the idea that willy is in jail (megaman 8) and that "You haven't done this in a while" dialog of dr. light gives us the idea it has been long since megaman hasn't been into action (that one made lol pretty hard) while the time span betwen each megaman its only of a coupple of months.
Man, this to be true gonna disappoint me pretty hard

I gave up on the hope of Mega Man 9 being a lead in to Mega Man X about, oh, 10 years ago. As a fan of both series (X more so) it really would have been nice to have seen this overlap *actually* occur rather than just be simply referenced in later X games. However, I'm pretty sure Capcom will just keep each time line independent of one another for eternity.
If not, I'll eat my hat. My hat made of cheese.

No fair, chesse is good, eat you hat made of petrolleum, xDDDDD

MM9 supposedly being the one that explains it all is just the result of fanboys wanting some closure. It never was intended as such.
The continuation of MM2 of sorts just refers to the overall game style, as opposed to the later games which added the Megabuster, slide and lots of other features and gimmicks.
Also, I'm pretty sure Inafune's already said once in the past that there'll never be a Megaman game giving closure to a series, or full explanations for everything. They want to keep it open to sequels and other in-between games.
jan_halmes @ Aug 14th 2008 2:30PM
@ CJLopezs- Mega Man 9's story is a continuation of Mega Man 8, but it's not suppose to tie in to Mega Man X at all. If it did, they wouldn't be able to do Mega Man 10, and 11, etc.

Who here wants to bet that there is a certain part of the game that requires Shock Guard in order to advance? Any takers?
Adam @ Aug 15th 2008 12:40AM
There's not been any part like that in past Mega Man games. While it may make your path through the level a bit easier, helper items usually aren't required to pass a certain stretch of booby traps—especially not in the earlier stages.
Cyantre @ Aug 15th 2008 1:23AM
True, but considering the games expected difficultly, I could see them making it something you need to have for one of the Wily stages. I could be wrong though.
Chintz @ Aug 14th 2008 4:27PM
I'm glad to see no ladder climbing enhancing powerup on the list. Most worthless powerup of the whole franchise...
Yan @ Aug 14th 2008 5:49PM
lol megaman is looking up at the board.
Mega: Hmm...what should I get with 5 bolts?
