Nintendo registers mysterious trademark for 'Piktura'
Siliconera spotted an unidentified Japanese trademark application from Nintendo, registered in June. The trademark is for the title "Piktura." Of course, it could be absolutely anything, from some kind of EyeToy-style webcam to a WiiWare drawing app to some internal technology that consumers will never know about and which won't show up in Nintendo hardware for ten years.
But, as Siliconera pointed out, it starts with "Pik," and that makes it not entirely impossible that this trademark is Pikmin-related. Maybe it suggests generating Pikmin environments out of photos! The possibility of a connection to the Pikmin game that Miyamoto confirmed is infinitely more exciting than some random thing nobody knows about.
[Minor update: changed a weird joke to something less weird.]

Making Pikmin landscapes from photos sounds entirely too awesome to be something Nintendo would do this generation.
coast19 @ Aug 12th 2008 4:06PM
Awesome yes, this generation? Why not, it would be a great feature to have on the Wii version of Pikmin.
Shogan @ Aug 12th 2008 5:35PM
Just saying that so far, software innovation hasn't been all that great. It would be neat though, and I do love Pikmin.

Perhaps it could be an extra unlockable feature where you can snap photos of gameplay and send to friends via WiFi. However, as fun as it can be to capture the shenanigans you're up to mid-game (I did enjoy it in Metroid Prime 3)...I'd rather this mysterious "Piktura" be something cooler.
Either way, I'd just be happy for it to be related to Pikmin at all!

It can be a new generation of pikmin or it can be the world pikmin live on, just throwing out some ideas.
Bones3D @ Aug 12th 2008 6:22PM
You wouldn't be suggesting a LittleBigPlanet-like title using Pikmin, would you? (Not that this wouldn't be insanely cool on several levels...)
With enough creative thinking, Pikmin does offer some interesting possibilities on the Wii.

For them to trademark it, it would have to be more significant than simple screenshot-taking
However, the "make pictures into Pikmin gardens" is a ludicrous idea, as the technology really isn't there. The Picture-puzzle thing is a standard function on the photo channel, and it would be the stupidest thing since Ping Pals to expect people to pay for a function that's already free on the console
Honestly, i can't see it, but if it were for the new Pikmin game, it would be an integral part of it for them to trademark it

Pik could also be Pikachu, so it could be a Pokemon Snap! sequel

Im sad now i saw the picture and thought this was gonna be relevant to Pikmin, but thank you once again NintendoWiiFanboy staff for reporting anything that may concern our video game playing
Frankie23 @ Aug 13th 2008 12:51AM
"...to a WiiWare game that makes jigsaw puzzles out of pictures on an SD card..."
You do realize that the Photo Channel pretty much already does this, right?
JC Fletcher @ Aug 13th 2008 2:30AM
I was trying to think of the least exciting thing possible.
Matisyahu Serious @ Aug 13th 2008 12:26PM
jc - it was funny, and people who can read, not just recognize words, got it.
Frankie23 @ Aug 13th 2008 1:11PM
@Matisyahu Serious - Just because you think it was funny, and I didn't, doesn't mean I can't read. Grow up and get over yourself. If JC had liked it that much, he wouldn't have removed it from the article.
Matisyahu Serious @ Aug 13th 2008 3:07PM
i apologize frankie...you can indeed read, you just have trouble with comprehension.
are we cool?
zchry @ Aug 13th 2008 7:35PM
You know what else starts with "Pik"?
Pikachu.
Yeah. Not cool.
Zephiel @ Aug 13th 2008 11:45PM
Pikachu resents that statement.
Abscissa @ Aug 14th 2008 6:20PM
I can just see it now:
Nintendo will announce that the Pikmin game that Miyamoto mentioned was in development is this "Piktura"...And it will be a Pikmin-themed version of Pokemon Snap. Nintendo will insist that it should make the hardcore gamers happy and then becomes utterly perplexed at the resulting backlash.
