DS Fanboy Review: Soul Bubbles

I struggle to think of anything at all that is wrong with this game. At the risk of sounding like an overly soft reviewer, Soul Bubbles is a masterpiece, with evidence of loving thought in everything that goes on the screen(s).

While Soul Bubbles nominally puts you in the role of the shaman who controls the wind to move a giant bubble full of glowing spirits, the way the camera centers on the bubble and the tiny shaman character flits around the screen make the bubble seem like the central character that you're controlling. Using wind created by moving the stylus in the direction of your choice, you push the bubble through tunnels, between branches, and into tiny passages in an effort to get the spirits to their destination at the end of the level. Along the way, you must diverge from the main path to find three "Calabash" per level. Pick up enough Calabash and you unlock another level.You start off able only to push the bubble, but, one at a time, new mechanics are introduced over the course of the whole game. You learn to split bubbles to make them easier to move through small openings, rejoin them, and inflate and deflate bubbles. As the game progresses, you learn to create new bubbles to reach inaccessible areas, and you're shown other puzzle-solving abilities including capturing exploding enemies inside a bubble for use as bombs, filling bubbles with water to put out fires, and using heavy and light gases to affect bubble movement.
The slow build of complexity allows the player to appreciate and master each new mechanic before the next one is introduced. It's a simple shortcut to a perfectly-executed difficulty curve. And curve it does: the first two levels are pleasant and enjoyable, but seemingly impossible to do anything but succeed in; as the game goes on, the mazes become more intricate, the Calabash better-hidden, and your progress is blocked by environmental puzzles, timing-based obstacles, and increasingly persistent enemies. Soul Bubbles never gets truly difficult, but it gets more involved as you do.
After learning pretty much everything to do in the game, the last world adds one final twist that almost entirely changes the feel of the game: cold. The bubble freezes, and suddenly you're playing Soul Bubbles the Hedgehog, guiding a rapidly-rolling ball through swirling, icy tunnels.

This elegantly-designed gameplay is accompanied by uniquely beautiful visuals. The levels range from lavish green forests to glowing caves, made beautiful not by fancy effects, but just by good art exemplified by subtly beautiful touches. Exaggerated rays of light stream between leaves, for example, and your spirits turn to brightly-illuminated pink hearts in the presence of Calabash. It's clear that a lot of workmanship went into everything displayed onscreen.
If there is a problem with Soul Bubbles, it is only that there isn't enough Soul Bubbles. It's a fairly quick play, and, except for hunting for Calabash you missed the first time, there's no real motivation to replay it other than pure enjoyment. However, you probably will replay it for pure enjoyment. Soul Bubbles is a wonderful game that deserves better than Toys R Us exclusivity.

I can't recommend this game enough. It's quirky, challenging, relaxing, and fun. The level design is excellent, and there's enough variation as you continue on in the game to keep it interesting.

God, you people really manage to screw up my day in a truly incredible fashion. It's rare that I get worked up this much about such a display of all-round pretentiousness and stupidity - for that, I applaud you. And no, I'm not going to provide "meaningful arguments", not because I can't, but because you morons seem to blatantly disregard them anyway in your mighty crusade for all that is holy and just.

Gay how exactly? I fail to see the point of you saying its gay. Was it too easy, or the gameplay mechanics to strange for you to like?
I like playing soul bubbles whenever I have some time. It really is a casual game, you go at your own pace, and its fun to sit and think about your next move. I recommend it to DS players.

I don't appreciate the use of "gay" as a negative (which you are clearly doing here) or the suggestion that something is wrong with bright and colorful games.
And who cares about the story? It shows up for a few seconds at the beginning of some levels.

ok, let's use numbers:
1 besides american people, the rest of the world doesn't always associate words with hate. so if i use gay or black or anything: it isn't racism or homophobia. i have quite a few gay friends from both sexes and they use the word gay to describe themselves all the time. pc terms are only used in formal moments. i never say i'm heterossexual, i usually say "i'm straight".
2 i've NEVER said there was something wrong with coloful graphics. i like elite beat agents (and it has ymca in it, doesn't it?) and other "joyful" games. it's just that soul bubbles feels too cute for my taste. not only the game design, but it's story and the whole premise of the game.
3 sometimes people don't like the same things as you do. live with it.
4 the internet. serious business.

If you knew it would sound homophobic or hurt someone, why did you decide to use the word anyway? Either you have a genetic lack of discretion or you chose the word specifically for the response it would get -- which is ridiculously juvenile. Expand your vocabulary and your mind ... even better, just say what you mean. If you don't like a game, say, "I don't like a game."
If you don't like it because it enflames the insecurity you have regarding your masculinity, see a therapist.

The TRU exclusivity, as far as I've heard, is only temporary. I know Amazon will start shipping the game in December.

I agree that Soul Bubbles is a fantastic and innovative game. The gameplay is inventive, the art and audio create a calming atmosphere, the puzzles are challenging without being frustratingly difficult, and the autosave features makes this an excellent candidate for gaming on the go.
It's unfortunate Soul Bubbles is only available at Toys R Us. I'm hoping it's a timed exclusive as Kimiko suggested so more people pick it up and enjoy it.

final world by collecting 50 calabash? Don't knock the games difficulty before you beat that one, man. But I agree, its a fantastic game.

I was curious about this game before, but this review has me interested. ^^
Oh, and as to the use of the word 'gay' by the second poster. Are you afraid your manliness is at stake if you play a "cute" or "girly" game? Buddy, you need to grow up. If you don't like the visuals in Soul Bubbles say so, but don't go using words like "gay" and "cute" in negative connotations because you feel yourself threatened by the different visual style of this game.

I hope it doesn't end up being another great portable game that nobody buys. Between the DS and PSP, there's way too many games that don't get the attention they deserve, all because they lack a shiny license.

if you are smart enough to realise that calling something gay is offensive the you should hopefully be smart enough to find some other words.
I can give you a few: kiddy, prepubescent, immature, colourful, cute...any of those fit
on a note not related to this biggot: I love soul bubbles, it's one of those games that usually go under your radar but is still great.

With all the shovelware on DS I would've definitely labeled this game gay just from seeing the cover but after reading this the game has piqued my interest. I mean come on kids.

Its only the very very last level of the game that's difficult and that because it was a puzzle, they should release a game where theyre all just puzzles or have two modes, then you would have so many discussions between people about how to complete a level etc, then more people will see interest in the game.
