O Canada! One million Wiis snapped up by Canadians
We kid, Canada! We've always loved your quirky country, and our admiration is only stronger for your recent Wii-purchasing exploits. Nintendo's console is all set to burst through the million mark in Canada, after shifting 318,000 units in the opening six months of 2008 and doubling sales of its closest rival.
NPD confirmed the figures, also revealing that total Wii unit sales in the country now stand at 986,200, with an NPD spokesman stating the obvious: he expected Wii to surpass the big one-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh at some point during July. Welcome to the millionaires' club, Canada! Grab a seat, quick -- it's getting crowded.

As a Canadian, I can confirm that this is what our military looks like.

Because the Canadian dollar is nearly the same as the US dollar now, the prices for Wiis and games are pretty much the same. $270 for a Wii and $49 for a game.
I wonder if the inventory is better in Canada than in the US. I hear there are still shortages in the US. In Canada you can walk into a store and usually find one.
Maybe this is related to the reports that Nintendo is emphasizing sales outside the US because the US$ is so weak right now.

You should check your resources. It's $49 for a really popular first party game. The run-of-the-mill third-party games are usually $34.

I was comparing amazon.ca vs amazon.com:
Super Mario Galaxy: normally 49.99 on both sites (but the Canadian site has a sale on: I could get it for 44.99-hmm).
Okami: 39.99 on both sites.
Now oddly Zelda Twilight Princess is always 59.99 in Canada, $10 more than the US. Not sure why that would be. Link must not like the cold.

Canada's no more "quirky" than America. I really wish Americans would stop thinking they own the world.
whistlepig @ Aug 8th 2008 9:17AM
i dont think i own the world ,just 6.5 acres of it

And, oh, I bet Paris Hilton WOULD be able to run America better than George Bush and that Grey-Haired Guy. Seen the video? She knows what shes talkin about. Oh, and the only reason I like america better is because the Nascar races are all own there. Lucky for me, they've got Canadian Tire series in cayuga, about 45 minutes from my place. AMERICA STOLE OUR FILLET MIGNONS! We were trying to get to Indianapolis, and they asked what was in the cooler and sitting ontop were our individually wrapped fillet mignons! We didn't find very good ones. BTW, this was like 3 years ago. And the girl felt bad and told us that nobody eats it - THEY BURN IT! They were $50 DOLLAR STEAKS!
There is my america sob-story. IT SUCKED!

I am more impressed that this means that there is about 1 Wii for every 30 people in this country. I wonder what the similar stats equal out to for Japan, UK, or the USA?
Cheswick @ Aug 8th 2008 11:06AM
On par with the US with roughly 300 million ppl and 10 million sold.
