Manhunt 2 controversy rules out Saints Row Wii

The controversy that was whipped up over Rockstar's naughty Manhunt 2 may be more far-reaching than we originally thought; for example, it's pretty much scared Volition right off the idea of producing a Saints Row game for the Wii.
Volition's Dan Sutton thinks that a Wii iteration of the crime epic would create little more than an unwanted hoo-hah, particularly with motion controls thrown into the mix. "With games like ours you get much more controversy when you add motion controls like you saw with Manhunt 2," remarked Sutton to CVG, before going on to explain how motion-controlled chainsaws and satchel charges probably wouldn't win many friends in the various regulatory bodies.
So where do Wii-owning, virtual-hooker-killers turn now? Take-Two has already played down the idea of a Grand Theft Auto game on the Wii, and now one of the next best alternatives has been emphatically ruled out. Ooh, how about a True Crime game? Actually, just not caring sounds like a better option to that.

Ok, so make these games without motion control.
*gasp* They could even resort to using the Classic Controller.

what a cryin' shame.

Was there much outcry about the Godfather game for Wii?
I don't understand why a violent game suddenly becomes a bad thing on the Wii. Whether it's the Wii or another console, you still have to buy the damn game before you can play it.

The article you cited for 'playing down' GTA on the Wii is over a year old. More recently, Reggie has said that he'd love an original GTA on the Wii, and when a Take-Two rep was asked about it, he replied:
"I can't comment on it, but obviously we have one of the best selling third –party games on the Wii in Carnival Games from 2K Play, so we know the Wii pretty well. We're building up assets to develop for the Wii and we're excited about its growth. I can't comment on GTA specifically on the Wii."

The Godfather: Blackhand Edition on Wii had some pretty violent (and good) motion controls. Other control problems, but the motion was very good overall. And I mean, wiimote choking. I really think these people are making a bigger deal out of it than it is. Manhunt 2 was just incredibly violent-- I mean, removing testicles with pliers is going to be looked upon poorly on any console.

Oh, and don't forget that controversy is not always bad for sales. I mean, how many people only know of (and bought) GTA because of the publicity it's received?
RowdyReptile @ Aug 5th 2008 12:06AM
I was going to bring up Godfather as well. I rented it and enjoyed the gameplay, but the Wiimote actions of choking someone and the force feedback provided was just a bit TOO realistic. I didn't like it.

This is pure b.s. Why are people and developers to afraid of trying to do something new instead of worrying about what John Q government has to say about it. The Wii needs these type of games period.
blerg @ Aug 4th 2008 10:29PM
if manhunt 2 hadnt sucked so much they wouldnt be worried about the controversy
blerg @ Aug 4th 2008 10:31PM
but wait.. to be fair ive never played manhunt 2... because several people told me it sucked and to not bother... so what i should have said was "if manhunt 2 had sold well, they would be talking about being worried by the controversy"
blerg @ Aug 4th 2008 10:33PM
*wouldn't !!
SoshiKitai @ Aug 4th 2008 11:19PM
Fairly enough, many hundreds of people have said the game sucked.
I tend to think the game is OK~ at most.
Personally, I felt the thrill more in the first Manhunt, but the thing that made me love Manhunt 2 was the Wiimote+Nunchuk boxing-action...
Other than that, Manhunt games weren't really known for story or hyperly-advanced gameplay... it's just a "get from point A to point B" game. Though once again: I tend to like the first one better (the smaller stages and fewer choices often had a "I'm dead I'm dead I'm dead"-feeling whenever you heard footsteps).

True Crime were great games, even in spite of the glitches. True Crime on the Wii would be great. What we need is a Lego GTA!
manyquestions @ Aug 4th 2008 11:18PM
Well, I guess this is kind of a little disappointing maybe. I mean, I get that it's like losing a little battle in Wii's third party war, which is bad. However, I can't confess myself all that disappointed. Wii, PS3, 360, DS, NES, I wouldn't have but these games on any system. They just don't suit my tastes, and therefore I'm left relatively unfazed by the whole thing.

SoshiKitai @ Aug 5th 2008 2:11PM
He's saying he doesn't really enjoy GTA/Saints Row/Manhunt games. So these kind of games not being able to come out due to controversy, doesn't bother him at all.
breeze78 @ Aug 4th 2008 11:19PM
doesn't matter if manhunt sucked...the point is that developers need to take a chance on something new instead of taking the easy way out. the wii is the new gen and wii want these type of games!
meist3r @ Aug 5th 2008 7:04AM
Well then I'll be playing Madworld while these wusses still decide wheter or not to make a profit from the most popular system. The censors can't possibly say anything against Madworld, it's entirely black and white and the enemy must bleed ... just how THEY usually work.
Critter3 @ Aug 5th 2008 10:54AM
That's stupid. That's what ratings are for. Thank God I have a 360!
MagNet @ Aug 5th 2008 12:46PM
And let's not forget Scarface for the wii, it even had the aformentioned chainsaw motion controls that were pretty fun :)
godlikeperson101 @ Aug 6th 2008 6:19PM
wait a god dam second wii is kiddy wii is casual B FUKING S now wii is too HARDCORE FOR US so wiis motion immersion is too fuking hardcore
