Japanese retailers jack up the price of R4
We can't say we're surprised that they're asking for more money for the R4, in light of all of the recent developments. Business owners like money, so we can understand them taking advantage of what's going on. In Japan, these business owners have more than doubled the price of the flash cart over the span of only days. So, all we're saying is that if you don't have one and want one, you probably should see about getting one before they get more expensive. Why would you want one? Uh, have you not read our homebrew guide?

Exactly. Why the hell would one want an R4 when one can get better flashcarts for cheaper?
MagNet @ Aug 1st 2008 5:42PM
Exactly, it's outdated. No SDHC support, no new firmware updates and I heard it's not even being manufactured anymore, there are cards for 15 bucks that can do much more.

What exactly do you want your Flash card to do? The R4 plays all the illegal roms fine if that's your thing and also does the home-brew scene what else do you want?
Whats the better flashcard then?

r4 doesn't have the best support for micro sd cards. so the biggest size you can get is 4 gig
Niz @ Aug 2nd 2008 5:55AM
Ok lets say on average a game is 100MB, on a 1GB card you get 10 games, on 4GB you get 40 games. Is that really not enough for you? Clearly it isnt so that's fine but i don't think that warrants saying that the R4 is inferior and why does everyone buy it bla bla. Who cares? it works! 4GB is enough for most.

It's not a matter of whether the cart does what you want it to do, but since you can get carts which do more things (more compatibility, more features, SDHC support) for cheaper, you'd be getting ripped off paying more to get an R4 than, say, an Edge or an iTouch.
If the information about the R4 becoming more expensive is correct, you'd soon be able to get an Acekard 2 or M3 Real for cheaper as well.

i was one of the lucky ones that discovered homebrew days after the r4 was released. Saved a lot of time and money buying an r4 instead of more expensive previous methods for bypassing the ds firmware.

i just got mine a month ago.

Why would you pay double for a middle-of-the-road cart that is in danger of being tanked? There are better, cheaper carts out there.
aliquis @ Aug 1st 2008 9:38PM
What is better and cheaper? Acekard? I want the CycloDS but dealextreme don't have it longer and I won't pay over 50 dollar for it when I know it have been available much cheaper. Already have the M3 lite but it's to much work and only takes cards up to 2GB. Would prefer if I could transfer my saves over somehow though.

Slot-2 card + FlashMe works for me.
Jamar @ Aug 1st 2008 11:06PM
Slot-2 cards are still pretty darn cheap.
aliquis @ Aug 2nd 2008 4:01PM
On my slot 2 card solution which still is one of the best one I have the benefit of fast loaded GBA games, but all roms and homebrew require patching, and of course I can't get a memory expension or rumble pack and it doesn't support SDHC.
So, my REQUIRED features are:
- SDHC
- Clean rom
- Download play
- DLDI patching
These are the must have features.
Other nice features, of which I think Acekard have all (and it's cheaper than R4 on dealextreme.)
- Good UI
- Easy to patch in cheats
- Passme functionality.
But then there is one scarce feature I really would have wanted, which the Acekard lacks but the CycloDS and Supercard have:
- Real time save.
Not as much needed features which I still want to have, though I don't know if I will get a card which actually makes use of it:
- Support for rumble pack, GBA cart (not needed if I keep the M3 lite) and memory expansion (what apps uses this? Opera, Quake 2 and a SNES emulator? Is it needed in the SNES emulator?)
Pretty useless feature which still exists and therefor would be nice to have to:
- Slow motion
So, are there any other cards out there to consider than the Acekard 2 or the CycloDS? Acekard is really cheap and I'd get up to 32 GB support I guess (they don't tell how much), clean rom, wifi download play, nice UI.
But CycloDS is still superior with it's in game menu with real time save and slow motion, at 35 $ I would buy it, but at over 50 $ I will probably not.
Are there any other cards which can compete with those two?
What GBA addons are the best ones? Only EzFlash V 3in1 got everything in one? Does it work 100% with both Acekard 2 and CycloDS?

Japanese retailers jack up the price of R4?Guess why?Had you guyes heard that Nintendo and other 54 game company(or some certain companies,I can not remember what the number exactly is) want to put R4 on court? That may be the root of r4 price soaring.Becase R4 will face more and more difficulty in the future, the supply of r4 will get more intense. The retailers, who are always the controllers in the market will say that "R4 is getting more and more hard to restock,so we have to rise the price"
The is their way to do the business, right? But the fact is R4 is no longer the only flashcard, and every one can perchase other cards to replace it.We also do not know whether news on Sueing R4 is right or wrong or Nintendo will finally win.But yes, whatever Nintendo do now will definitly "jact up" the r4 price.
i hope Nintendo win or they will lose more, because what they do now is making ds for r4.
