Keighley walks a fine line with Reggie, Dunaway defends herself
Geoff Keighley, you have bigger stones than us. The GameTrailers TV presenter grabbed super-sized Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aime immediately after he left stage at Nintendo's infamous E3 2008 keynote, and subsequently gave him a grilling that Paxman would be proud of.
While Reggie was mostly gracious about Keighley's constant enquiries into the new Mario and Zelda titles, he did show the odd sign of irritation, at one point protesting, "Geoff, you keep trying to date me, you know. My girlfriend's going to get upset. You keep trying to date me. You can't do that." Protip, Geoff: when the vein starts bulging in the side of Reggie's head, that's the time to stop asking about Mario and Zelda.
In a totally different interview, Reggie's conference co-presenter Cammie "Smiler" Dunaway has defended herself from (rather absurd, if you ask us) accusations that she was feigning enthusiasm during Nintendo's keynote. "Tell your blog that I'm really a genuinely smiley, nice person," she instructed Wired's Chris Kohler. "Because people think I'm fake, smiling up there. I'm just not! It's just me! I am who I am."
Ah, the hard-hitting drama of the post-E3 analysis!

So what you're saying is that I've go noting to buy between now and New Year? Thanks a bunch Reggie.
supa_s @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:20PM
So she's genuinely annoying? Doesn't that make it... worse?
adolson @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:23PM
LOL, best comment ever.
Jason Zagar @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:45PM
LOL, You forgot Condescending.
Seriously, the whole time she talked like she was talking to children.
Erik @ Jul 22nd 2008 9:36PM
She pissed me off. I hate people that are overly happy. I think she should just drink some beer and calm down. Stop trying to entertain people with crappy smiles.
John Rios @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:21PM
That interview seemed awkward... maybe becasue I half expected Reggie to rip his arms off at any moment.
adolson @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:25PM
"GET OVER HERE!"
How awesome would it be if Midway announced the Wii version of MK vs DC, but instead it's MK vs Reggie?
Mduck @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:30PM
wait.. what?!
Reggie has a girlfriend?!
man, that must be one lucky lady
lol
I think that was one of Reggie's biggest announcements for this year's E3 :\
Q-Kid-Kyle @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:22PM
do you hear yourself? GIRLFRIEND! Dude's not even married LOL!
adolson @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:43PM
The hardcore have Animal Crossing? Thanks, Reggie, but no thanks.
Garu @ Jul 22nd 2008 2:59PM
Right after this interview Reggie ripped into Geoff like Tyra Banks after someone says she has a fat ass!
samfish @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:11PM
She might be a nice person, but she REALLY needs to take some public speaking classes. She didn't come off as natural at all and more like a head cheer leader or something.
Mr Khan @ Jul 22nd 2008 5:26PM
Earlier you mentioned something about screens for the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed. Could you link 'em? I can't find any for the life of me

I think he could have grilled him a bit harder (it wasn't exactly Paxmanesque. Paxman would have torn him a new one. Well, if Paxman was a gamer....), but I'm glad he at least had a little go. I really wish video game journalists would do stuff like this more often when interviewing the company big-wigs. They usually just ask bland, inoffensive questions and hence let them get away with waffling-on with their usual boring "We're so great. Everything's perfect. La la la" corporate nonsense, rather than actually addressing the real issues and concerns of gamers.
adolson @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:27PM
"...rather than actually addressing the real issues"
Yeah, Reggie, tell us what you're doing to feed the starving kids and to help protect the endangered species and polluted lakes. Tell us!
:)
Spencer @ Jul 22nd 2008 3:34PM
Uh...with Nintendo...everything is great...and they are doing wonderful...
You may not like it, but they've got every right to brag right now.
Hamster @ Jul 22nd 2008 4:12PM
Well Spencer, I personally think that bragging is a pretty unpleasant and classless thing to do. Particularly when what you're bragging about is essentially selling out your fans and your artistic integrity. You may think that's cool, but I don't.
I'm not saying that's what Nintendo has done, it just seems that way sometimes. This E3 being a perfect example. Just because we love something doesn't mean we can't ever criticize it. It's because I love Nintendo that I do criticize it. If you just accept whatever a company does without question, no matter how much of a delusional fanboy you are, then you will get treated like dirt.
Mr Khan @ Jul 22nd 2008 5:25PM
They did some DEEP digging to unearth a replacement for Perrin Kaplan that was both more annoying and clueless than she was
Although, in a way, Reggie was right. Even if they had literally opened the doors to EAD Studios and showed everything they currently have on the table, the haters and whiners out there wouldn't be satisfied
I just find the whole "I'm buying a 360 today! I'm done with Nintendo forever!" to be a bit immature of a response.
Roto13 @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:24PM
Seriously. *sigh*
justin b. @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:25PM
lol, that's actually exactly what I did! I went and bought the price cut version. But it wasn't THAT black and white; I still have my Wii and intend to use it for those mythical new Zelda/Mario (hopefully Metroid) titles and I'm using it for music games because its cheaper to buy instruments on there and they're already wireless and look cooler, but I actually am pretty done with the waiting around. I'll do my in-between gaming on 360. Anyway, I wanted one for Banjo (though I don't like the direction it's taking), Mass Effect and Left 4 Dead.
Roto13 @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:24PM
I'd be careful if I was him.

The man all about kicking ass and taking names got his ass kicked and his name taken... Interesting...
justin b. @ Jul 22nd 2008 8:26PM
This was such a great interview! Geoff Keighley and Adam Sessler are my favorite two game journalists. Geoff is always pushing buttons and expressing EXACTLY what fans are thinking, and Adam is always making "educated gaming experts" on CNN look like morons.
Sonic_13 @ Jul 22nd 2008 11:29PM
While I would absolutely love to know dates for games, I actually started to get a little annoyed at how many times Geoff was bugging Reggie about it.
Geoff should learn that if there isn't an answer the first five times the question is asked, then stop asking.
