VC Monday Madness video wrap-up 7/21/08
After the craziness of E3, we were ready to get back to a bit of normalcy. And what could be more normal than some shmups being released on the Virtual Console? Nothing, that's what! So, hit up the video above for the games in motion, then be sure to head past the break for the rest.

Super Fantasy Zone (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points)

Super Fantasy Zone is a lot like Fantasy Zone on the Sega Master System. Now, that's not to say the title doesn't have its own merits, because, when you get down to it, Super Fantasy Zone is quite the fun time. You won't be disappointed in this colorful and accessible shooter.

Gley Lancer (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points)

Gley Lancer is a pretty good shmup. It offers you a variety of ways to utilize your arsenal, allowing for a different approach to the game depending on what the player wants to do. On top of that, the action is constant and you're always going to be shooting this or dodging that, making for a tense and fun experience. If you're a fan of the genre, don't overlook this gem.

You weren't kidding about Gley Lancer! My eyes started hurting just watching the video! That asteroid field in the background was definitely not the soundest design choice.

Hinkle: In the Super Fantasy Zone review, you say that the icons showing what flowers are left to destroy blink randomly. How long did you really test the game? It didn't take me long at all to realize that they blink with your proximity to them. This is so you can know to raise/lower your ship when they're higher or lower on the screen than you are, and you can't actually see them on screen.

Oh, good tip. Didn't pick up on that myself, thanks!

Ahhh, back to the comfort of VC MM... and more Shmups! I still dream for the day I can hear David narrate over Earthbound...
Yes, I have Hinklemania. Keep up the great work Dave!

I had a case of "Hinklemania", but the Doctor gave me some penicillin and it cleared it up right away. The itching took a little longer.
