NPD says: A winner is Wii in the U.S.

One of the benefits of being a major company is that you get to find out things first -- like how much stuff you sold. When the NPD Group informed Nintendo of the most recent figures, the Big N sent a love text to our Joystiq overlords, bragging about their current sales standings in the U.S.

But we already know that the Wii sells a lot, so what's the big deal this time? According to Nintendo, NPD figures confirm that the Wii has surpassed its competitors as the North American console leader. As of today, the Wii has sold almost 10.9 million units, which was enough to give it the edge over the Xbox 360.

Of course, there's much more to being the king of consoles than selling a lot of hardware, as you need the software to match. However you feel about the Wii's game library, though, this is quite an accomplishment for the little white console that could.

And although with things like Brawl and Galaxy, I think in a way it might...

The Wii's attach rate shows that it really isn't the king of consoles...

It has the most hardware sales....

But considering the Wii has the lowest attach rate (most people using it as the 'Wii Sports machine') and the lowest amount of time used on average, I don't think it's the king of consoles.

So, first of all, the Wii doesn't have the lowest attach rate:

Granted, those are numbers from April (most recent I could find), but still...PS3's release of "MGS4" didn't increase purchasing of other games very much on the PS3, so I doubt that it surpassed the Wii yet.

Personally, I've got 10 games on the Wii, so I'm doing my best to help get that attach rate up! And "CoD5" and "The Conduit" are on my list for the relatively near future...

Yes it is. Face it, you've lost. And it only took 20 months for the Wii to topple something the 360 spent 2 years building.

Also, people using the Wii as a "Wii Sports" machine is a crock of shit. In that case, people use the PS3 as a Blu-Ray machine, and the 360 as a homoerotic FPS machine.

10 or so in my own collection so far (Metroid Prime 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Baroque, Metalslug Anthology, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Super Mario Galaxy, DBZ Budakai 2, Zelda, Harvey Birdman)... and much more wanted. (Godfather, DragonQuest: Swords, Super Paper Mario, No More Heros ect.)
