First-time modder wings it, produces classy DS mod

Kudos to Flickr user Obajoo, who went and did what none of us are brave enough to do: despite having no previous experience, she added this classy design of two silhouetted birds to her Metallic Rose DS. Writing about the process on her blog, Obajoo makes it sound reasonably straightforward -- so much so that we're even beginning to think about contemplating whether or not to maybe consider customizing our DS. Not all custom paint jobs end up looking quite as nice as Obajoo's. Take, for example, Elyssa's Marth tribute, viper640_0's misguided Triforce design, or this frankly frightening custom GBA. On second thoughts, we might leave ours as it is.

I thought the Metallic Rose DS Lite looked pretty ugly, but this design (and the other one on Obajoo's Flickr) make it look pretty awesome.
Worth mentioning: Awesome d20 cookies on the same album!

What kind of paint do you use to make these custom dses and have the paint not immediately scratch off?

I used Testors Model paint and enamel paint. Any paint will scratch off without a primer though, so you have to make sure you seal it with a clear coat of enamel. I used Model Makers Ultra Gloss Clear coat. You can find those at Hobby Lobby or Michael's.

That's a great design and well executed. But I wonder if you could forgo the painting entirely and just use contact paper? Won't be as classy as enamel or such, but might work with far less risk??
I've been using contact paper to skin/sticker my Guitar Hero controller (see at www.angryedison.com) and it works well. Plus it's not permanent and somewhat easy to remove and redo when you want a different design.
Of course, I haven't done it with my DS but just a thought. I actually use my DS at work for taking notes and thus a giant Mega Man head is less than inconspicuous. :)
