Just now, at the
Nintendo Developers' Roundtable -- an apparent follow-up to yesterday's keynote -- Katsuya Eguchi announced that not only will players be able to transfer their characters and accumulated items from the DS version of
Animal Crossing to the newly announced
Animal Crossing: City Folk, but DS-Wii connectivity will feature in other ways as well. While we don't know all of the specifics (we tried to get clarification, but the Q&A wrapped too quickly), it sounds as though you can also use the DS to transfer
AC data between Wiis if you don't have Wi-Fi.
Also planned for Japan (for now) is the use of DS Download Stations. Players will be able to
download information to their handhelds and take it home for transfer to the Wii title. Sounds like this is meant to open up new buyable items, and Eguchi said they were hoping to bring that feature to the U.S. as well.

I have mixed feelings about the DS -> Wii transfer feature. On one hand, it's going to be a great convenience for some Animal Crossing fanatics, but on the other hand, for me personally, unless City Folk is going to have ten times the total number of furnishings as Wild World it takes the excitement out of dropping by Nook's each day to see what goods are for sale and the challenge and satisfaction of building up one's furniture inventory a little at a time. The daily shopping routine and the unpredictability of available items are major factors in what makes the Animal Crossing series so addictive, so this has the potential to really undermine that by offering an easy way out. I know I have the willpower to start from scratch even when I don't have to, but not everyone with both WW and CF would.

I never bought AC for the DS (or the GameCube, for that matter), deciding instead to be patient until the Wii version is released. Now, with this news today of Wii and DS connectivity, I'll be out the door in the next few minutes to buy a copy of AC:WW.

Hmm... I agree with the mixed feelings about the connectivity feature. I am inclined to say that I prefer starting from scratch on CF than transferring my two-year earned stuff from WW... it'll be more entertaining! (for me at least ^^).
But I support the fact that there IS a connectivity feature. It is up to the player to which point use it! =)

So basically, transferring cheated items from AC:WW will be more practical than waiting for a cheat system for the Wii. In turn, people will sell transferred cheated items over the auction system for pointless gain they won't even require. That will suck for people that actually PLAY the freaking game... Hopefully it won't turn out like the GTS in the newest Pokemon games.
I'm not going to use this feature unless there are some AC:WW exclusive items that I can transfer, because like Zealot said, the randomness of new items is what makes Animal Crossing addictive.
All in all, I'm really looking forward to this game! Starting from scratch isn't fun when you've already played through it a few times (Gamecube, DS versions), so a new game is just what I needed.

As for me, I have over 10 million bells rom a mural-making business I used to have, and I'd like to not lose it when I upgrade. I think as a way of saying "thanks for playing AC:WW so much", they should let those who actually supported the franchise keep their stuff when they make the jump.
