E308: Miyamoto says DS and Wii Zelda teams collaborating
As if the prospect of a new Legend of Zelda game isn't good enough, Miyamoto mentioned to IGN that not only are the regular old Zelda team hard at work on a Wii entry, but that the folks behind the DS title The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass are also pitching in. "The Zelda team in particular always works on Zelda titles. The core members of the Zelda team have for a very long time now been focused on Zelda games, and continue to focus on Zelda games, so they are hard at work and working away," Miyamoto commented to IGN. "And then, of course, we have the DS Zelda team as well, so even there we're having some switching of people in and out where the DS team is mixing in with the Wii team and working on the Wii version."As you can imagine, our mind is racing at the prospect of a new Zelda game. One that combines the best of the console titles and handheld entry, creating a new Zelda that is so appealing that to be without it would surely end in your death.

Yes!!!! Finally!!! *Some* word on the next Zelda!!!!!

I really hope Eiji Aonuma isn't directing this one. Ever since he took over the series, Zelda hasn't been great like it was in the past(cept for TWW), when Shiggy was directing.
I hope to god it isn't a sequel to TP...the next Wii Zelda needs to explain more about the Imprisoning War, and tie up loose ends in the timeline rather than presenting more questions than answers.
Sensai @ Jul 16th 2008 10:12AM
I honestly think that the creator's are NOT forming some kind of timeline...I think, in their mind, each game is more or less a separate affair.
But, it only seems they think that way every so often. So I dunno.

This is a huge relief. I'm glad they've confirmed that a new Zelda game is coming down the pipe.
As a side note, I think "the Legend of Zelda" is almost always a re-telling of the same basic story, rather than a continuation. I think the only real direct sequel was Zelda II for the NES.
Mike @ Jul 16th 2008 11:54AM
Indeed. It's always a re-telling. Hence the "Legend" element in the title.

I have heard that the new Zelda game for the Wii is going to be called The Legend of Zelda The Triforce Gods.
z3r0x @ Jul 16th 2008 11:45AM
The Legend of Zelda: Triforce of the Gods is the Japanese title for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. NoA renamed it because of the religious reference (the were real strict during the SNES era).

There is no excuse for the Zelda team(s) to not develop a Born-For-Wii title with Wii MotionPlus 1:1 sword wielding. If you ask any Wii owner's waggle wet dream, his or her top two is, firstly, to swing a lightsaber, and second to chop stuff up as Link.
Having true control over the Master Sword is what needs to be the centrepiece of the next Zelda title.
Stephen @ Jul 16th 2008 12:32PM
Does this suggest an 8 swords adventure? I think there are enough DS's to support it. I thought 4 Swords Adventure was brilliant. Too bad I don't have any friends to play it with.

I swear to god if they make this new one like Wind Waker I'm going to kill myself! Twilight Princess 2 FTW!!!
Gnomick @ Jul 16th 2008 2:00PM
I'm hoping and praying for a Four Swords game with Wii/DS connectivity and online multiplayer. The only thing keeping Four Swords from being great in the past was the need for every player to have both a GBA and a link-cable, but cables are obsolete in the Wii era!
Also, I doubt 1:1 motion control swordfighting is high on the list for the new Zelda game. Zelda games have never been about swordfighting. 2D Zeldas just let you point link in a direction and stab. 3D Zeldas had better swordfighting, but it was never put to good use (except maybe while dueling Ganondorf at the end of Twilight Princess).
Dan @ Jul 16th 2008 3:10PM
Maybe this is an opportunity to reinvent the franchise? Make this a little more motion-control driven: blocking and finding weakpoints with your sword, casting spells that require fine aim, maybe even steering a special kind of bomb or boomerang...
The Wii's biggest promise was new gameplay. Why re-tread the old N64 stuff with better graphics?
Kevin @ Jul 20th 2008 1:23PM
It's gonna be like Majora's Mask for the N64. TP came out and was full of hype (and was damned good too), then, 2 years on (or 3 probably in this case), another adventure game using the same engine is released. It's good, but not on the same scale as the predecessor.
But that won't stop me from buying it. =P
Twilight Princess is probably the best game I've ever played.

I just wish Nintendo listened to the ideas of their fans a bit more. With all the rabid fan genius concentrated in this and other sites, a collaboration of fans and makers would produce a game so good that dead guys would come back just to play it!
