E308: Miyamoto comments on Wii's storage solution issue

Kind of weird how storage issues never came up at the E3 keynote, huh? We thought so, too. And, when Shigeru Miyamoto got cornered by the folks at IGN, they asked him about the lack of storage love.

"There isn't anything that we can announce today, but we have been thinking along a variety of different lines regarding this matter for some time now," Shiggy said. "So my hope is that sometime in the not too distant future we will be able to discuss some concrete solutions." So, all hope is not lost. Nintendo is at least still on the case. It's just that they're taking longer than we'd all like.

Iwata already said as much, and Fischer solidified that into a solution that didn't involve them releasing hardware

The different paths must either rely on some sort of streaming content solution (unlikely due to low standards of broadband speeds in the important American market), opening of the USB port, or opening of the SD slot

I guess "we are working on it" is better than nothing but why so secretive?. The solutions are obvious. Just confirm whether it will be accomplished by allowing games to be played from SD memory card (and if so, whether SDHC will be supported as well) and/or through USB external hard disk (or special Nintendo Wii Disk).

You're going to go out and buy a 4 gig SD card and sit and wait...and when they realize it's more practical for speed/non-techie users to plug in USB(something they're used to if they're even the most casual PC user compared to opening up a panel, and placing a tiny card into a tiny slot) or any other legitmate reasons why one solution or the other doesn't work(we don't know the hardware limits of the system so we can't just say it's as simple as adding usb hard drive support.) you would throw a fit wouldn't you? You bought a useless card that isn't going to do anything on the wii...

SDHC isn't possible. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be possible to add SDHC support to a SD device.

The reason Nintendo is so secretive is probably because once the public finds out about their intentions, they all start complaining about why it isn't out right now when they're not finished with it. I don't think Kid Icarus is anywhere near being completed, which is why it wasn't announced at e3. It wasn't even supposed to be announced, it was leaked. Because it wasn't supposed to be announced, it probably isn't coming for a while, so they don't want people to get their hopes up. But now, since it was discovered, everyone is mad at Nintendo for not announcing it, when they never even said they were making the game.

I have to wonder how many people have actually run out of space on their Wii?

Every time I download something, I expect to see a message saying I've run out of space, but I have something like 75% left.

I'm sure someone has the problem, though... maybe the Wii Fanboy bloggers who download dozens of Virtual Console and WiiWare games.

1) I'm glad they're still listening to the fanbase enough to know that they need to do something about the lack of storage.
2) I'm glad they're STILL working on it, rather than having pushed out some half-assed plan without really considering alternatives. Seems they're more likely to do something this way that will actually remain a solution, rather than just being a temporary stopgap that we'll all be bitching about in another 18 months.

Not really, all I have are all the free channels (including Internet), 3 N64 games, and Lostwinds in terms of downloads and I'm at something like 25% free space left. That's hardly a large number of downloads by any metric. I think the Brawl save file is like 100 blocks though, which might have a little to do with it, and I do have the Homebrew Channel installed but I don't think it's that big.

I'm not a troll, i've been buying Nintendo products since the beginning. I just feel like alot of other people feel, that Nintendo does alot of fucked up shit. Nintendo's bullheadedness and going against the grain will once again be their demise. Remember when the N64 came out and they stuck with the cartridge format instead of going for the cd format? When consoles started getting online games Nintendo said that people weren't interested in playing games over the internet. When the 360 and ps3 gave you the option to hook your system up to a high def tv Nintendo said that there wasn't enough people with high def tv's to warrant the inclusion of that feature into their console. A lot of stupid decisions. Yea the wii is sold out everywhere you go because a lot of non gamers are buying it as well, but in the long run it's the hardcore videogamer that keeps all these consoles afloat. If and when they start losing the majority of that audience, maybe they'll start listening to what the people who really buy their games think.

For Christsake, Nintendo! Just write a f-cking system update that allowed us to plug in portable hard drives/jump drives/SD cards and play the damn games from there! It'll take you about two days tops to write and bug test that kind of code. Homebrewers can do it already, for cryin' outloud!

For what it's worth I'll buy every console Nintendo comes out with, I just wish they would think a little more about the people who made them who they are today. Don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with trying to appeal to a wider market of gamers, I just wish they would put a little more effort in appealing to its core audience of gamers as well.
