E308: GTA: Chinatown Wars shooting up the DS in winter!
And ... snap. Since the oft-panned Grand Theft Auto on the GBA, we have waited for another handheld installment. We have it now, with GTA: Chinatown Wars, coming this winter on DS. The game will feature a brand new engine (hopefully ditching the top-down view) and will take place in Liberty City -- the flagship location of the GTA series. If you played GTAIII and IV, you will have trekked through Chinatown (the awesomest place ever), and more of the high-fighting action in Chinatown Wars will be fantastic. Coming this winter, like, a few months away!

liberty city's chinatown -- so that should be a recreation of NYC's chinatown -- i wonder if you can cross over to little italy, it's just around the corner .. turf wars !!
as for the 3d open world concept, Transformers has already demonstrated that it's very much doable, technically.

Wow wasn't expecting this. With all the kids game on DS this makes for an exciting new change.

Hell yeah, this'll be good. Hoping it won't be a bitch to control though.

I can't help but worry that this will be a huge mistake. I hope they prove me wrong, though.

Not bad at all.
I was hoping for a different setting than Liberty City, but this will suffice, provided they don't screw it up somehow.

Was that like the only cool news for the DS!? And I'm not even into GTA... :/

incidentally, chinatown is a very compact area, i don't think there will actually be very much grand-auto-thieving?

I don't really trust big spin-off games.
Remember another big name spin-off that was about to come to the DS? Yeah, that's right, Assassin's Creed DS.
Remember how it miserably failed? They'r all looking for a quick cash-in based on the franchise name.
Hopefully GTA DS will prove me wrong.

Yeah. But that was Ubisoft. And they're the ones putting out half of the crappy games on DS. Anyone ever heard of a little series called Petz?

Yea ummm anything that ends in a "z" or has a z ish ending is almost sure to suck.
But I think GTA for the DS could be good as long as they use the DS's screens (graphic wise) to their full extent. I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

It better play like that Transformers DS game, except better!
Chinatown? It's not very dangerous, unless you get mauled by the crowds or you piss off people. I'd prefer Little Italy Wars.

I hope this will be like Gta 1&2 and wi-fi co-op is included.
LocalToast @ Jul 15th 2008 2:18PM
Like others have stated, Transformers pulled off the free-roaming, open world aspect pretty well. The game itself was pretty boring, but if the makers of this game can base it off the Transformers game, we could be in for a treat.
I'm not getting my hopes up, though...

I hope this is going to be 3D!
Zombiesrot @ Jul 25th 2008 5:42PM
It'll probably be Liberty City. Just not as many streets to explore. Also most of the game will either 'stay in Chinatown' or the main story will 'branch from a war in chinatown.'

Superb! I want to play it!

I can see this being the biggest mistake in the history of rockstar.
BAD IDEA ROCKSTAR! please don't do it
