E308: Wii Sports Resort announced [Update 1: Screens!]

To some, Wii Sports is almost synonymous with the Wii itself, so you can paint us totally unamazed to hear that there'll be a follow-up. Wii Sports Resort will launch in Spring 2009, shipping with one of those fancy new Wii MotionPlus add-ons and a special Wii Remote jacket to house your elongated Wiimote.
The theme here is beach games -- perfect for people like us who don't particularly enjoy going outside, let alone baring our flesh. On stage at Nintendo's E3 press conference, we were treated to demos of games such as Disc Dog (lobbing a frisbee for your dog), Jet Ski (self-explanatory), and a sword-jousting minigame in which players attempt to knock each other off of a platform. So, who's excited?

It always comes down to the same thing.... how much? I'm tired of needing little extras for the Wii.
El hombre arana @ Jul 15th 2008 1:22PM
Well nice game but all in all I am underwhelmed. Wii Sports2 ain't big news for me.
RUTHLOOSE @ Jul 15th 2008 1:24PM
Color me unsurprised. Wake me when WiiRacquetball is announced.
Oneiroi @ Jul 15th 2008 1:26PM
I guess I was expecting...more games/sports...more exciting sports...maybe even more depth. These seem rather lackluster to me.
TheOverlord#2 can has Animals Crossing? @ Jul 15th 2008 6:11PM
There will be more games...if Nintendo is gonna take all the way 'til Spring '09...it better have more than 3 games...
I mean Wii Sports that was free here has 5 games...why would a probably $30 - $40 game have only 3 games?
Mike @ Jul 15th 2008 1:26PM
I'll be good to go with this if there's more balance board.
Don Day @ Jul 15th 2008 1:28PM
Wow. I guess I'm the only one excited by this news. The sword fighting was 1:1! Holy Pope Shitting In The Woods! A 1:1 light saber game has to be around the corner.
Plus, Wii Sports gets a shit load of play still when I have a friends over. That and Warioware. I am really looking forward to this!

I'm pretty excited for games like this and Animal Crossing, but I thought over all the show was pretty disappointing. I don't know, maybe I over hyped myself into believing they'd announce a new Zelda, or Pikmin 3, but no nothing, I saw nothing there that would appeal to me, the hard-core Nintendo gamer. No Mario, no Zelda, no Kid Icarus, no Pikmin 3, no new Metroid, nothing...................
BlackDogAssault @ Jul 15th 2008 1:31PM
Ain't it TOO DAMN early to be disappointed? There's a whole day still to go, all of those could be announced yet.
Mike @ Jul 15th 2008 1:39PM
Also: Nintendo is going around all summer doing shows. This could only be the tip of the iceberg.

Meh, $40 for this and the motion plus (giving me 2) combined would be nice, $50 would be pushing it
Hamster @ Jul 15th 2008 1:37PM
I don't think it could be possible for me to be less excited.
crazypenguin @ Jul 15th 2008 1:40PM
the sword game did look impressive though, i mean the way that the wiimote and the person on screen were in sync, i liked very much, but yet i don't think i'll be purchasing any of this from my own pocket money.
John Rios @ Jul 15th 2008 1:40PM
Excited for the motion, not the game.
nicolas @ Jul 15th 2008 1:45PM
It was a nice demo for the Wii MOTION PLUS attachment, but im not excited for it much.
HPFFE @ Jul 15th 2008 1:48PM
Why is everybody so bloody dissapointed? I don't think the conference was bad at all. I actually liked the stuff they showed.
Jimmijam @ Jul 15th 2008 2:00PM
"Why is everybody so bloody dissapointed?"
Because casual gamers (the primary target market for Nintendo) aren't the type of persona who reads these blogs and post comments. Nintendo is a business, folks reacting negatively to the press conference are either 1) not in the business and are consumers, 2) not a shareholder, or 3) are not defined as "casual gamers".
Shareholders, on the other hand, would probably be ecstatic from the presentation. Especially with clearly articulated demonstration of Nintendo's business strategy.
MarMar @ Jul 15th 2008 6:07PM
why prey tell would a share-holder be disappointed...? The company is raking in money and looks to be raking in even more!
KilgoreTrout XL @ Jul 15th 2008 2:10PM
I couldn't be more disappointed. The only interesting announcement was for a damned peripheral to a $60 controller that was supposed to be accurate enough already. I'd say $25 a piece, at least, which is another $100 if you want to update all four controllers.
And dammit, what they should have done, if they wanted to release a Wii Sports sequel, is to perfect the sports that are already there. I mean, jetskiiing? please.
What a disaster.
Jimmijam @ Jul 15th 2008 2:25PM
Oh man, I'd definitely go for a golf game that took advantage of the Wii Board and the new controller. Yes.
KilgoreTrout XL @ Jul 15th 2008 2:31PM
Absolutely. Or a tennis game with more sensitivity and proper slice/topspin features.
TomSkib @ Jul 15th 2008 3:32PM
Meh... the Jet Skiing looks ok. I sure hope there's more to it than just those 3 mini games. Volleyball & shuffleboard would be cool additions to the "resort" theme.
Jason @ Jul 15th 2008 2:12PM
Tech demo. 'nuff said.
Timdogg @ Jul 15th 2008 2:22PM
I am pretty excited about this title. I would not pay $50, but I will pick this up for sure!!!
bruce @ Jul 15th 2008 3:39PM
did they say if the new sports game will be online?
Prof_Chaos @ Jul 15th 2008 3:43PM
Wait a second......that's the same island that you jog around in WiiFit. I'm kind of embarrassed that I noticed that....
All and all it was a pretty underwhelming showing. Hopefully there will be some stuff mentioned later in the show. Remember SSBB was announced after the keynote.
I'm still kind of stoked for this and Animal Crossing, but I did want something more, even f it wasn't going to be released until Nov 09.
Andrew1073 @ Jul 21st 2008 8:41AM
I am angry. I really thought they would realize bowling was the best game out of all the sports. They should have made it online-able so 4 friends at my house can enter a bowling tournament that just might have 4 of my other friends at their house playing in said tournament.
C'Mon wii, think about this kind of stuff! That online aspect with bowling and tournaments would have me ecstatic. I could care less about throwing a frisbee.
