E308: Hey, disgruntled Nintendo fans -- remember Wario Land?
Though it didn't get so much as a syllable in the Nintendo presser earlier today, Wario Land: Shake It remains very much in our thoughts. It's not slipped Nintendo's mind either, for the company belched out fresh screens and character art for its 2D platformer earlier today. In a nutshell, it's basically more of what we've already seen -- quite gorgeous hand-drawn 2D art that continues to look like the cat's galoshes.
Nintendo forgetting the hardcore? This gallery says otherwise.

I don't understand why they didn't show it at the conference. Makes no sense.
Lijik @ Jul 15th 2008 11:16PM
I just saw the trailer they had for E3, and it kind of makes sense why they didnt. One: We already know about the game. Two: the trailer was pretty awful starting with random clips of the intro video and then game footage we've mostly already seen cut between a kid and his friend shaking the remote or being idiots (one of them makes a lasso motion when they need to throw a pirate goom at a block).
Still a quick "Hey guys. Wario Land. ALRIGHT NOW TIME FOR WII MUSIC!" would have sufficed.
psyborg @ Jul 16th 2008 3:07AM
Does it really matter though?
Thats one thing I don't get, while I was incredibly disapointed with the conference, it doesn't mean all the core games we've known about suddenly cease to exist now because Nintendo didn't talk about them at a media conference.
Psy @ Jul 15th 2008 10:25PM
It looks decent. I may consider picking it up.
But geez... will you guys give up the optimism already?
8-bit.artist @ Jul 15th 2008 10:43PM
true this game does appeal to some hardcore gamers, but i just dont see this game bringing in 25-30 hours of gameplay. unless there is a crapton of stages. a suggested retail price would be nice to know as well.
Dan @ Jul 15th 2008 10:53PM
sigh.
crazyyellowguy @ Jul 15th 2008 11:05PM
your kidding... right?
Wario is great and all, but definately not a day one purchase. In addition it was announced way before E3 and has little merit to put faith back into Nintendo.
I hope they announce something big later this week and thanks Nintendo wiifanboy for trying, it was a valient effort
Lijik @ Jul 15th 2008 11:18PM
I'm pretty sure 2d platformer AND the best we're gonna get from nintendo for a long time is good enough reason for a day one purchase.
crazyyellowguy @ Jul 16th 2008 2:27AM
I agree wario is going to be a great and successful game, but that fact that its going to be Nintendo's best game is a while (according to you) doesn't make it desirable, it actually gives nintendo a worse case to try to bring back the "core" gamers.
Its like settling for a 3 star hotel because there are no other hotels around. It would be more desirable to have a bunch of 5 star hotels around (zelda, mario, icarus, metroid, pikmin, etc) and be able to choose which one(s) you want to stay at.
Terra @ Jul 15th 2008 11:28PM
day one purchase for me! the game looks great. 2-d graphics will never die!
Shadow31 @ Jul 15th 2008 11:30PM
Who is anyone kidding? Appealing to the hardcore market? I know more casual gamers who play Wario than hardcore. What Wario game ever has a decent enough length? Personally, I've found Wario games as a Mario wannabe. Fun, but nothing to get excited over. Plus, we knew about this. Nintendo, you're losing your longtime fans. What happened to fan loyalty from the days of old? Oh yeah, money is the root of all evil, no wonder you lost it...
Lijik @ Jul 16th 2008 2:19AM
I take it you've never played Wario Land 2 or 3 which were both quite long for portable titles and of extremely high quality. Plus they didn't play like Mario. At all. In fact none of them but the first two (WL1 and WLVB).
.... Have you... have you ever played Wario at all?
Shadow31 @ Jul 16th 2008 8:36AM
I own all the Wario Land games, along with Wario World, only of which actually felt different than a Mario platformer. As stated before, I'm not a huge fan. Don't judge like that.
And any handheld I can exhaust all gameplay from in the first weekend is short in my book. Never found them high in replay value, either... never mentioned low quality, and I did say "personally", as in it is my opinion. Either way, even if this appeals to the core gamer audience, one core game does not make all good. I wasn't dissing Wario there, so don't get all worked up.
shinneri @ Jul 15th 2008 11:57PM
Yeah, Nintendo hasn't completely forgotten about us geeks and otaku.. they just don't talk about this game in the conference because they might scare the casuals if they show a game that has goals and requires skill (!).
Anyway, the graphics in Wario Land are so crisp and colorful. I'll take this over the typical next-gen color palette of brown, light brown and dark brown any day. An original platformer is greatly appreciated too. Does anyone know if this is played with nunchuck or Wiimote alone?

oh please! GROW THE FUCK UP!!! this a business. nintendo and every other videogame company wants to make money. period. they could give two shits about the loyal nintendo fans. the same goes for every other videogame company. example: square enix/Final Fantasy XIII! now on 360.
if you want hardcore games, then go buy a console that has hardcore games. or build a gaming pc so you play hardcore games. you can't have one console anymore. well maybe in the 360's case you can. 360 wii / ps3 wii is the way to go.
Terra @ Jul 16th 2008 12:39AM
hey joystiq! your reply button SUCKS ASS!!! anyway, correction: "this is a business."
ok i'm done.
psyborg @ Jul 16th 2008 3:10AM
LOL, just because something isn't long then its not hardcore? I honestly don't see my grandparents ever playing a Wario platformer.
Shadow31 @ Jul 16th 2008 8:39AM
...I have a 360, and wow you have issues. Nintendo owns my favorite franchises, and they were doing really well with the Wii up until now. Why don't you grow the fuck up rather than act like a child and explode on people in a gaming blog? It's people like you that give us gamers a bad name... pathetic...
Shadow31 @ Jul 16th 2008 8:40AM
Sorry, this was @ Terra.
dswill79 @ Jul 16th 2008 3:33PM
See what happens, Nintendo, when you have a semi-disappointing press conference? All this fanboy-on-fanboy hostility! Remember this for next year, ok?!?
KL Smash @ Jul 16th 2008 8:45PM
"Remember this for next year, ok?!?"
What makes you so sure there will be an E3 next year? I think that E3 will be replaced by more, smaller, "exclusive conferences". Maybe all at the same time, maybe not... That is what i predict, not what i hope.
