New Nintendo patent application reveals old Classic Controller
On June 26, a patent application from Nintendo was published on the USPTO's database. The application details a strange-looking controller with the button layout of the GameCube pad and a big rectangular cavity in the middle. Could we be looking at the future of the Classic Controller, or even the next implementation of the GameCube controller for Wii owners?
No, we couldn't! This application may just now be published in the U.S., but it's based on a Japanese patent application from 2005. This is the past of the Classic Controller, from back when Nintendo was talking about "shells." That cavity is for the Wii Remote, of course, or, as the application puts it, "an imaging information arithmetic unit."

It seems rather uncomfortable due to its size. Then again so is holding two controllers but using one...

i don't actually have a classic controller, but that cord seems... well, cordy. and this design looks cordless. and that seems nice. but i still want an n64 controller that i don't have to mod.

HAHA that looks very Ugly..... Go Nintendo just like the power glove lol

Nintendo didn't actually make the Power Glove, infact it had very little if anything to do with it. As a NES peripheral, history seems to have burdened them with it, but it was actually made by Mattel in the US (and PAX in Japan).

A wireless classic controller would be the icing on my wireless cake (Wiimote, Wavebird, DS3 & all my remotes).

how about a Wii gameCube controller.. with the sensor on it OR like in guitar Hero guitar: have the joystick control the main menu of the Wii.
Abscissa @ Jul 17th 2008 2:08PM
Dammit, now THAT is MUCH more like what the classic controller SHOULD have been.

It has to do with the analog sticks on controllers.

Looks like the past will be the future...
