Oh no he didn't: Microsoft man dubs Wii a novelty
Pretty this won't be. In an interview with Gamasutra, Microsoft big cheese Aaron Greenberg ended up discussing the rivalry between the Xbox 360 and Wii, and in the process loftily dismissed Nintendo's console as a "novelty."Greenberg compared Wii buyers to "the same people that buy a karaoke machine," and suggested that the console was simply "something [to] break out when people come over, and it's maybe a fun thing [...] They're not really buying it for games, they're just buying it as a novelty." From there, he adopts a more conciliatory tone, stating that Microsoft "[doesn't] really see the Wii as a direct competitor, we actually very much complement the Wii experience." Greenberg believes that Wii owners will eventually "graduate" to the Xbox 360.
While we can't ignore the 360's higher software tie-in ratio, Greenberg and his fellow naysayers seem to forget that the Wii hardware alone turns a profit for Nintendo, that it continues to thrash the pants off everything else out there, and that demand still outstrips supply in some parts of the world, despite the thing launching more than 18 months ago. The tiresome excuse of Wii being a "novelty" is beginning to wear horribly thin.

I love my Wii. But, he is right. Yes, there are great games on the wii. But, a lack of quality online has kept me from playing it all the time. When I get a Wii game, I play it and beat it. But after that, Im done. I just go back to my PC or 360 and play Halo 3, CoD 4, Unreal 3, or StarCraft. Mainly the reason the Wii has sold so much is becaue of the cheaper price. But soo, with the 360 price drop, I believe the wii wont be ahead by as much.
$250 for a small selection of good games or $299 for a large selection of good games. Most will rather pay the extra $50 for a 360 to play the better games.
So, yes, the Wii is fun. But, the only people that go back are the casual gamers, kids, and Extreme Fanboys that refuse to understand that there are better things. I know one of those fanboys to, so don't say I am making stuff up.
Haohmaru @ Jul 8th 2008 8:07AM
@ Erik
..And then there are those like myself who enjoy quality games on both Wii and the HD systems equally. As for your friend who "refuses"(omg!) to see things YOUR way - get ready for this, because I know it's a shocker - people have different tastes. Maybe it's time for you to get off of your high horse and come to terms with that.
Mr Khan @ Jul 7th 2008 7:17PM
I can't graduate, this year i got held back by No More Heroes, Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, and Okami
kavorka @ Jul 7th 2008 7:25PM
Pft, if people are going to "graduate" to anything, it would be a ps3. I can see his point in principle and concept, but Xbox? Seriously?
Ghen @ Jul 8th 2008 7:46AM
I'd graduate to a ps3 but there's no modchips for it yet. So I'll probably be getting an xbox this sept or dec for online games.
Thing he doesn't understand is the Nintendo games are quite literally epic. Super Mario Galaxy is the perfect platformer hands down. Smash Bros is the perfect more-than-2 fighter hands down. etc. They make the Wii a MUST own for gamers.
Matt B @ Jul 7th 2008 7:29PM
Another clueless MS exec, trying to ignore how his division continues to bleed cash, especially with the 20% failure rate of the 360's hardware.
Sure, a bunch of people may buy the Wii for parties. But there are a ton of hardcore gamers out their who buy the Wii for gaming: Twilight Princess, Glaxy, Battalion Wars, Brawl, Zach and Wiki, Mario Kart, Rayman, even Guitar Hero 3. These are all games that can and are played alone.
The Wii was the first console I bought since the Genesis, and that's because the gameplay and controls are so innovative and fun. Yes, its a great party system, but its also a great single player gaming system. And I play by myself a lot (much to my finance's chagrin).
I'm not taking away that the XBox 360 is a good gaming system as well, but it comes at a much higher price with traditional controls. The Wii is different, and in my opinion, much better.

I've owned a wii since release. What he says is true. I've only booted it up aroudn 50 times in almost 2 years. there's only about 3 good wii games, and most the other games I play on it are gamecube. It's Ironic that Nintendo, hero of the game crash of 1983, Will cause the next game crash.
CJLopez @ Jul 7th 2008 8:15PM
Funny how you state that the Wii will give us another videogame crash
Do you even know why it happened in the first place??? no??? then close yer mouth and go play with your toys
sn1per @ Jul 7th 2008 8:52PM
If you don't play your Wii at all, why do you frequent a Wii blog?
Seriously though, name one good game that's exclusive to the 360. Halo was a mediocre game at best, and everything else is also out for either ps3, PC, or both.
Mr Khan @ Jul 7th 2008 9:09PM
Sure, everyone figures that the influx of crappy games on the Wii can equate to the one that happened on the 2600 so long ago, but what you're thinking of is crappy games on a whole different scale. A lot of what's on the Wii is needless shovelware, but a lot of what we coin shovelware is actually enjoyed by many (ex: Carnival Games)
The key to the crash of 2600 was that it was a flood of shitty games that NOBODY wanted to buy, because the games either didn't work, or only barely worked, like the infamous ET game. The companies invested their money into games that never sold, and hence there was a crash. With Wii, you're recouping on your investment even with minimal sales, usually. Wii means profit. So even if it "ruined" gaming by completely going all-casual, the companies would not crash.
CaptAwesome @ Jul 7th 2008 7:58PM

Ugh its like Nintendo's full of such honest people who treat their franchises like works of art. Microsoft and the people who work for them think they're so ahead of the game, but to be honest, they're really not.
Synch @ Jul 7th 2008 9:06PM
...The Wii Fit trainer must've insulted his abnormally large head; bet it adds about 15kg of crap to his weight.
If I think about it, I've only had one party where we pulled out the Wii. About 95% of the time I'm playing solo through Okami and NiGHTS, soloing or partnering in Brawl and MKWii, or firing up the VC to play StarFox 64. Or, I'm doing stuff on Pokemon Ranch because I'm lame like that. ;) That adds up to about 10-15 hours a week; not much, but the DS has been getting serious playtime because of all the games I have to finish. On top of that, my Wii got around 200 hours of use this past January because I bought (and played straight through) Tales of Symphonia. (GCN game, but still!) It might get another 20-30 hours if I decide to play through Twilight Princess again.
And of course it'll see probably another 100 or so hours out of ToS:DoNW and any new Zelda game that comes out, and quite a bit more out of Mega Man 9.
360, on the other hand...
Microsoft can make all the jabs they want at Nintendo, but until they can match the sustainability, utility and pure fun of the Wii, they can shut their gobs.
Tina @ Jul 7th 2008 10:17PM
I'm a 20 year old female. I have a wii and I have neither console. (Though if I somehow am able to avoid becoming homeless these next few months as I apply for grad school, I will get a ps3+a new tv... because, lets face it, neither is worth getting unless you get a new top-of-the-line tv, which together must be at least 2000 bucks... very few people can afford that... unless your parents are buying for you =D)
Here's what I own for the wii:
Resident Evil 4, Mortal Kombat, Smash Bros Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, WarioWare, Guitar Hero, and Cooking Mama (used to have Dewey and Metroid Prime but I sold them)... hardly kids-play... the first two at least. Need I use a razor to slit open a woman's eye to prove myself?
Kenology @ Jul 7th 2008 9:23PM
Looks like Microsofts strategy is to pigeon hole Nintendo as the lower-tier console where Wii owners will "move up" to an Xbox360. This is hilarious spin... because it's just not gonna happen, wishful thinking and nothing else.
Fiefdom @ Jul 7th 2008 9:16PM
My Wii and PS3 crush the 360 with their ability to not incinerate themselves after three hours of play.
Honestly though, it's stupid for anyone to label anyone who owns a particular console as being a participant in any kind of stereotype. Not every Wii owner uses their Wii as a Wii Sports machine and not every 360 owner is an oversexed male with an inferiority complex regarding their console's rate of hardware failure.
I like Trauma Center and Fire Emblem (and will probably enjoy the upcoming Tales of Symphonia sequel) more than Halo and Dead or Alive. The only 360 games (which I can't play on my PS3) that interest me are Ikaruga (which I can play on the Wii thanks to its functional backwards compatibility) and some of the Japan only visual novels (there's only two or three anyways I think) which I have for the PC or PS2 anyways, (and maybe Star Ocean 4 and Eternal Sonata, but they aren't enough to warrant me buying the console and I can import the Japanese PS3 version of Eternal Sonata if I want). The Wii may be a novelty for those who don't use it, but anyone with more than a few games (and most anyone who visits this site and has a Wii) likely uses it as a normal game console, which is what it is. The DS sure as hell isn't a novelty Nintendogs machine (even though I wouldn't be surprised if a number of younger people have used it as such), I don't see how labeling the Wii as a novelty is in any way more accurate. This accusation comes across as... quite churlish actually. It makes it a little difficult to not build personal bias against the 360 when a random Microsoft official makes a blatantly stupid comment against a competitor every other month.
The 360 is a novelty in Japan, though. :P
Microx @ Jul 7th 2008 9:24PM

Part of the reason I liked Nintendo's thinking with regard to this generation of consoles is that it was the cheaper option. But, I have to say, I've spent more money on games in this year so far than ever before.

Oh, but they're adding "avatars" to the Xbox360 now! SOOOO not a ripoff of Miis at all! *sighs*
Why would you rip off something that's not your competition. I mean really, look at Guitar Hero: World Tour. Vocal and Drum peripheral added copying their main competitor, Rock Band. The only difference is Guitar Hero still pulls it off. Microsoft is gay.
Well, not completely. It's got good games like Halo. Still, I wouldn't turn down an opportunity to play all Nintendo's awesome stuff to play Halo and nothing else. :P

Matthew McNutt @ Jul 7th 2008 11:17PM
Okay, he's kinda trying to tear down the competition ... but as someone who owns a Wii & a 360, I do kind of agree with his point that they complement each other instead of compete with each other. Obviously, that's not their intention - but it certainly works that way for me.
LV426 @ Jul 8th 2008 6:51PM
VERY agreed. I love the Wii, and will have several games I want to complete on it. It is the perfect complement to my PC (and with a PC, I do not EVER need a 360.... might not ever need a PS3)
psyborg @ Jul 7th 2008 11:22PM
I had a 360(which really only appeals to the 15 year old sociopath in me) and I graduated to the Wii.
This guy can go fuck himself.
Drahken @ Jul 7th 2008 11:39PM
Hasn't Microsoft been touting this spiel verbatim since the Wii came out? I can see them not liking the idea of the Wii being more popular then their system, but how can they be in such heavy denial like that? The 360 has sold 19,541,903 units in two and half years. The Wii has sold 28,458,919 units in just a year and half. (Figures as of June 28, 2008. Check out VGCharts.com.) The Wii has sold 145% as many units as the 360 in just 60% of the time. To deny the Wii's success is just delusional and, well, weird.
Joe Cart @ Jul 8th 2008 1:20AM
This guy obviously hasnt done his homework on the wii. Sure, the Wii has party games, and their awesome too. Wii Sports, Mario Party 8, Wii Play, Carnival games and their all great. But he's failing to remember that the Wii is home to some of the best games we've seen in years: Twighlight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, RE: Umbrall Chronicles, RE4, Smash Bros Brawl, Kart, a new way of playing Madden and NBA, the list goes on. Not to mention great Mid-card games like No more heroes and House of the dead 2 & 3 with the perfect shot.
See, too many idiots are drawn by graphics, which is where xbox wins over a lot of people. People have totally forgotten about quality gameplay and have devoted their judgement to visials, which is ok for about 3 weeks, but then the pretty graphics get old, whereas great gameplay never gets old. Outside of Halo and Gears of war, what else is there on the 360 thats worthy of true attention?
SoshiKitai @ Jul 8th 2008 2:44AM
*drops head* I swear, when will Microsoft stop?
I have respect for Microsoft, but it's very immature how they keep going on and on against the Wii. Saying that it's no rival, how it's a poor console, how it's a fad, etc etc... and yet, it's still there. And the longer it lasts, the more they go into a form of narcissism and denial.
Look, in many senses, the man's right. Sadly, there are hundreds of things that I can use as an example and excuse that can prove that it's not the system - it's the developers.
The Wii isn't the one causing the problems and weaknesses for the system, it's all the developers - and that's really all it is.
The Wii can shine if used properly - and rarely is it even used well at all.

For some reason, i've always had PlayStation consoles because i was born into that generation, and then when i finally get a console from another game company, Microsoft steps up and tells me that the Wii is a 'novelty' that, eventually, will make me switch to XBox 360. Well, think again Microsoft, i never attended to buy an XBox, and i surtenly won't after this! The PS3 however, is my next goal.
Now i'm definetly switching to Mac, when i get the money to buy one.
Cheers to Nintendo and Sony, the best gaming companies!

Haohmaru @ Jul 8th 2008 8:21AM
Heh. After finishing Ninja Gaiden II and Lost Odyssey, I sold my 360 and "graduated" to Sony's MGS4 bundle - and I still play Wii and VC games between play sessions, just as I did when I played my 360. So much for our Cro-Magnon friend's argument there.
TomSkib @ Jul 8th 2008 8:52AM
Its morons like this guy that makes me NOT want to buy a 360 or PS3. Halo 3 is the only reason I would buy a 360. And maybe NHL 2009. Sorry Microsoft, I'm not shelling out $300 for a system just so I can play 2 games.
wud_e @ Jul 8th 2008 9:53AM
Haven't they said this crap already? I do want a 360 like at the end of next year, in the meantime though Mario Kart Wii has my system hot. I like how the Wii is beating the pants off the comp and they still try to discount it.
iMarc @ Jul 8th 2008 9:56AM
I just don't get Microsoft's strategy here. The market is growing and everyone is doing well (even MS despite their heavy losses due to 360 failure rates_. You already have a certain percentage of the hardcore gamer market... so why would you make these comments that will alienate others?
All you get out of it is people who will buy a PS3 as a second machine or will laugh at you as you push your casual arcade lineup that you just insulted.
ericdrum @ Jul 8th 2008 12:25PM
At the end of the day, the Wii is in a different class from the PS3 and 360. I know we have all this anecdotal evidence that there are hardcore Wii players that don't care too much about other systems. There are also tons of fans that are into the Nintendo world and love their Mario and Zelda games. But at the end of the day when I look at the demographic that Sony and MS are going after, they are very different than the Wii demographic. Most Wii fans that use it as a primary system are into different games than a PS3 or 360 fan. They aren't clamoring for shooters. I work with a lot of gamers and most of us are married with small kids. We are all much more interested in games on the 360 or PS3. We all play BoomBlox and Mario Kart with our kids, but when we have free time to sit and play, every single one of us looks elsewhere from the Wii. I think this is the case with many gamers out there. I use my Wii for a different type of gaming and that suits Nintendo just fine. They aren't marketing their machine to be the hardcore shooting platform. They are going for something different and I think that is what sets them apart from the rest. It really gives Nintendo a different identity to the consumer and make the average 360 or PS3 gamer not think of it as a weird thing at all to just buy a Wii because it's so different. Parents see the Wii as a much more child friendly device as well. So to sum this all up, I don't thinks that MS or Sony is really too focused on "stealing" the average Wii customer just yet. They definitely want those dollars, but they aren't going to bend over backwards for them right now. They aren't the targets. The gaming market is definitely big enough (and growing) to support these different products. It's naive to think one of these manufacturers have to win and the rest should just call it a day. These marketing guys have to paint their consumers with broad strokes as that's how the market really looks to a company. I know that the average guy that visits nintendowiifanboy.com will have a different perspective, but this is how Aaron sees it. So yeah, Nintendo is making tons of money and kicking ass with their product. But there's lots of dudes like me with a lot of cash to put into their gaming habit who like prettier graphics and multiplayer gaming with friends. No matter how awesome the Wii is, I'm going to dedicate my gaming funds to something other than the Wii because there are certain things it just doesn't offer me. I don't see what the big deal is with that and why so many people get upset. I'm going to continue spending money on both.

Are you kidding? Microsoft is just jealous because once again, Nintendo has captured everyone's attention, and become the gaming king again! Don't forget that it was NINTENDO who had the first real gaming console, and was the first to bring in 3D gaming! Besides, how many superb consoles did Nintendo release before Microsoft and Sony made their consoles? Wii games are great! Cmon, your gonna tell me Mario, Link, Mega Man, Brawl, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime/Samus, and Donkey Kong are NOVELTIES? Microsoft has Halo, Sony has Metal Gear Solid, and that's it! Don't forget Microsoft screwed their customers on customer service, and Sony priced their PS3's with absurd prices.
