Wii Warm Up: Robot masters
We're going to talk about Mega Man more, because, well, we can. The topic today is bosses -- with the introduction of Splash Woman, the series is taking an interesting step. How do you feel about there being a robot woman boss in the game? Intrigued, annoyed, or maybe indifferent?Robot feminism aside, though, let's just talk about robot masters in general. Since there have been so many Mega Man games, Capcom has used up a lot of boss themes already. Even the ones in Mega Man 9 seem like slightly tweaked rehashes of old bosses. What do you think, though? Has the Mega Man boss well run dry? On another note, can you think of some nifty boss ideas here on the spot?

FIRST!
I don't know. As long as they don't go the way of the X series where they used recolors (just in 3D) for bosses.
Ghen @ Jul 7th 2008 1:09PM
might as well not say anything after 'first' because it gets ignored anyway. It only takes one word to prove your stupidity to the world.
Roto13 @ Jul 6th 2008 11:04AM
I'm all for a bit of feminism in Mega Man and I'm only sad it's taken this long!
Jmanx24 @ Jul 6th 2008 11:06AM
I don't personally think it is a big deal that it is a woman; however, they could've used "splash man" and that would have fit too, and then we could have avoided this article haha. For the most part though, I like the names of the bosses in 9: Magma, Galaxy, Tornado, Concrete all sound cool. Hornet man falls in the same vein of Snake man and Toad man, which is fine. I am intrigued by Plug man, especially with what he'll end up looking like (extension cord/outlet ftw) and then there is splash woman, so I'd say it's a more solid 9 than some we've seen in the past (Tengu man is cool, but come on, I still don't know what a Tengu is). Plus anything beats MM6, those guys...ugh cringe
My Robot Master would be Vapor Man chyeah water level
Sammah @ Jul 6th 2008 11:08AM
Communism Man. Make it happen, Capcom.
TheFreak @ Jul 6th 2008 11:59AM
Yeah, he'd go great with Tienan Man.
Ghen @ Jul 7th 2008 1:10PM
I see what you did there.
Drahken @ Jul 7th 2008 3:10PM
Tienan Man's buddies include Bread Line Man, Five-Year Plan Man, Undesirable Man, and Sputnik Man.

I'm not too keen on this game, the art style, none of it. But I do not want to stomp on anyone's parade. This game seems to be making people happy and happiness can only be a good thing. If we all spread happiness then maybe the world could be a little more homely.

I'm just trying to figure out who Robert is...

LOL. Ridiculous typo, for the lose (or lulz).
Perhaps a case of waking up too early on a Sunday?

First of all, I just want to say that the Mega Man 6 robot masters were awesome (despite widely being rehashes of those seen in Mega Man 2).
Secondly, Splash Woman isn't the first female robot master, just the first to bear the "Woman" suffix. Centaur Man is, for all intents and purposes, a woman. I won't get into it now, but there is more arguments for it than against it.
I think the bosses for Mega Man 9 sound great. I'm really looking forward to seeing their designs.

I'm generally a new Wii-gamer, and i've never owned any of the old-school Nintendo consoles; NES, SNES, N64 or GameCube.
Henze, i've never played Mega Man.
I've never been to keen on the old 8-bit art style since i'm not from that generation, and i spent very little money and time on Virtual Console games. If everybody says that this game is gonna kick ass, then i might as well hop on the train! If only the game gets good reviews, i might get it.
Soiden @ Jul 6th 2008 5:35PM
Try downloading ROMs. Play the old Megamans, they're good. GOOD.
meplascak @ Jul 6th 2008 1:02PM
Man, woman... it doesn't make a difference, they're getting defeated regardless.
Maxx the Slash @ Jul 6th 2008 1:21PM
I think a female Robot Master is fine. As long as they make her look like a woman and not like a pile of random metal like most of the Robot Masters are. What I'm really concerned about is how they feel Concrete Man was a good idea. Mega Man could just punch him and make him crumble. Wood Man and Stone Man were also a bad idea back in the day. A robot made of wood, stone, and now concrete? There exists robots that splinter wood and crush stones and concrete. Not a smart move Capcom.
Mr Khan @ Jul 6th 2008 2:32PM
I wanna see some blatant rip-off robot masters, like Power Man, Super Man, Bat Man, Wonder Man, etc, etc
I don't know, to see Capcom spoof the fact that they've more or less dredged the whole sea of themes
(01) @ Jul 6th 2008 2:32PM
What, are we 12? Samus was kicking ass as a woman 20 years ago and we didn't mind. I don't see how a female antagonist, especially in an 8-bit game will change anything.
Soiden @ Jul 6th 2008 5:37PM
What about Icebergman? Quarkman? Universeman?! xD
Wil @ Jul 6th 2008 7:32PM
universeman? don't stop there. bring in:
particle man
triangle man
and person man.
god, i miss tinytoon adventures.
thank you, TMBG!
Drahken @ Jul 7th 2008 3:13PM
Oh yes. That song always makes me think of Tiny Toons.
Vegna @ Jul 6th 2008 8:10PM
A. Basically, all she is is someone else I gotta kill. Man, Woman, Whatever. They're in my way, no matter the gender.
B. Aqua Man form 8 was also a girl, or a really feminine gay guy (Nothing against gays, It just calls you handsome)
C. Many of the Megaman bosses are rehashes in some way. different animations for similar attacks, though there are generally enough differences to hide it and make it feel new.
D. As for Ideas: Samurai Man, Nuke Man, Jedi Man (yay copyright issues)
8-bit.artist @ Jul 7th 2008 7:42AM
i dont think many people care about the rehash of bosses. i mean, in mm1 you had fire man and then in mm2 you had heat man.
moo @ Jul 7th 2008 10:49AM
and now we have magma man. who's up for lava man, flame man, burn man, and uh .. hot man ?
what i missed were that the old "weaknesses" made sense -- boulder (guts) beats scissors, scissors cut electricity, ice beat fire .. and uh, that's sort of it. :P
Drahken @ Jul 7th 2008 3:14PM
There already is a Flame Man. Mega Man 6.
manyquestions @ Jul 7th 2008 2:56PM
Wario Man. :)
Drahken @ Jul 7th 2008 3:41PM
Well for my predictions of the new Robot Masters, check this post: http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/mega-man-9-looks-great-sounds-great-did-we-mention-looks-great/#c12998301
(Mark my words. Hornet Man's weapon will be Hornet Shield.)
I'm not misogynistic or anything. Samus is my favorite game character of all time. (It helps that the games she stars in kick ass too.) But it seems odd that'd they pick now to break the Robot Master mold. (Eh? Eh? Master Mold? X-Men anyone?) They're bringing Mega Man back in all his 8-bit glory specifically for nostalgia's sake, and then they go and do something drastically different. Ah well. Like others have already said, it really doesn't matter the gender. It IS a robot after all, and one that's soon to be little more than scrap.
Other Robot Master ideas: Gas Man (pretty self-explanatory. he's a stand air-type guy), Sonic Man (He shoots over 100,000 drink combinations at you), Egg Man (He shoots mean beans at you), and Scat Man (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop).
Hafk @ Jul 7th 2008 3:59PM
Bass Man
Either Geddy Lee or a robotic fish. Both are awesome.
Hafk @ Jul 7th 2008 4:04PM
I guess Geddy would be the Working Man.
Soiden @ Jul 7th 2008 4:31PM
And don't forget the strongest: Man man!
