DS Daily: The next great remake
Maybe it was a matter of time, but that isn't important -- what is important is that you guys called it. Chrono Trigger is headed to the DS (and we wouldn't be surprised to see something Snatcher-related for the DS eventually), and that makes last year's celebration of the age of remakes a success. Which, of course, means we need to do the whole thing again, and that means we have to turn to you, gentle readers. We need all-new games to explore for their remakeability, so open up. Let us know what you might like to see, with the exceptions of Snatcher, Super Smash Bros., Abe's Oddysee, and of course, Chrono Trigger. We'll make a new poll from your suggestions, so get to suggesting. Remakes, ports, and re-imaginings of titles are all fair game. Tell us what you'd play!

Secret Of Mana, and especially its sequel Seiken Densetsu 3.
Terranigma.
Earthbound.
Serenity @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:58PM
I second all of those!
gab de persia @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:40PM
I suggest the best of the best ... Earthbound.
It is a so good RGP.
MrEverdred01 @ Jul 4th 2008 12:32AM
EarthBound. Obviously. Just look at my screen name. Everdred ftw!
ozwalled @ Jul 4th 2008 6:12PM
EarthBound clearly is THE game that Nintendo needs to be releasing right now for SOMETHING, and for the DS would be awesome. You could have town maps and menus on one screen and the general movement map on the other, and swap them as necessary.
It seems a no-brainer... so WHY Nintendo haven't you re-released EarthBound? :/
raiderx @ Jul 4th 2008 1:35PM
EARTHBOUND, NOW.
Mike_NJ @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:33AM
Super Metroid, Secret of Evermore, Shadowrun...
I wonder if they could do a Super Gameboy port, so you could plug your old Gameboy games into the slot and play via the SGB software? ;)
Shiv @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:36AM
I'll second the call for Secret of Mana. I frickin' love that game. The sequel was pretty good as well, but the orignal was played through so many times that it's a bit more special to me. What they need to do is add wireless multiplayer for it to tuly rock.
It might also be interesting to use the bottom screen for selecting magic in a way that doesn't interrupt the flow of the game. Might mess up the balance of the game though - there were many times when going into the ring menus was a way to stop and think about strategy - especially when playing in multiplayer mode.
While we're on the subject of SNES games, I'll throw in Rock n Roll racing. Probably alone on that one though!
Plokosh @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:40AM
How about Kirby Superstars? It's got awesome gameplay and could work nicely with 2-player WiFi co-op. :-3
Mike_NJ @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:50AM
There was actually a blurb here on KSS for DS...
And an article on gamasutra, too, with a release date of Sept 29th.
Nigeria @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:51AM
Kirby Superstar is already coming. Somtime this year, I believe.
James @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:56AM
Last week I had a 2 hour long conversation about how it would be perfect if they released Chrono Trigger and Terranigma on the DS. Half way there so far...
Gato @ Jul 3rd 2008 8:58AM
Oh, I'd love to see a new Kid Icarus, Earthbound and maybe even a new-looking Tales of Phantasia. I loved that one. Or how about a Wii remake of Link's Awakening or the Oracle series (Zelda)?
Matt G. @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:00AM
1. a direct port of Super Mario RPG
2. a DS port of all three DKC games. I'm sure they could all fit onto one cartridge.
Andrew @ Jul 4th 2008 11:00AM
I agree 100% on both counts.
In addition to that, Paper Mario would be great. I know there was a rumor about that coming out, but it hasn't been officiated yet.
PS3 Darklighter @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:05AM
Earthbound, Secret of Mana, Secret of Mana 2 (I would love a us release after so long and there is that DS game based on Secret of Mana 2), Ogre Battle 64, Bahamut Lagoon (I would love a US release at last), Paper Mario, Any Fire Emblem (we are getting one so why not more), Donkey Kong 64, Earthbound 2 (again a US release would be awesome), Robin Hood Legend of Sherwood (great mac game would work well on DS), Lufia 2 (best non square SNES rpg)
Serenity @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:58PM
Earthbound 2?... You mean mother 3? Mother 1 was never released in the US and Mother 2 came over as Earthbound. Mother 3 was the newest one on the GBA.
Kimiko @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:30AM
Oh, almost forgot..
The LucasArts adventures of course!
Monkey Island 1 and 2, Zak McCracken and Loom should at least be possible on the DS, maybe even Indiana Jones and Day Of The Tentacle.
iruka @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:31PM
Yep I would love to play Loom on my DS... I could with ScummVM but I can't seem to find the audio files in the game disc... pretty much pointless playing it without the sounds :(
Opus @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:35AM
Update the art and port the Ultima series
Carmageddon
Starcraft
ryan @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:36AM
SMRPG
Nigeria @ Jul 3rd 2008 9:53AM
Nights into Dreams with full stylus controls.
JohnathanEnder @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:01AM
Diablo.
Just replace "clicks" with "pokes." Though I wonder how many DS screens that would break. ^_^
izzy @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:21PM
Yes.
mauroh @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:04AM
Mother [all of 'em], Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean, Bahamut Lagoon, Seiken Densetsu 3 and above all, not a remake but the new entry on the Golden Sun series [the final chapter of the trilogy I assume...]
tambre @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:25AM
star ocean, supposedly, is coming out on the PSP along with star ocean 2. its talked about in the pspfanboy site. :)
ethan42404 @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:14AM
I second a new Kid Icarus game.
Add in a new Faxanadu.
Why isn't the DS getting Bionic Commando Rearmed?
XDragon @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:24AM
Castlevania SOTN
Final Fantasy VI
TMNT IV
Diablo
Warcraft II
Starcraft
Super Metroid
The Simpson's Arcade Game
Actraiser
Faxanadu
Friday The 13th
Phantasy Star IV
Metal Gear (nes)
Albert Oddessy (saturn)
The House Of The Dead
aj @ Jul 4th 2008 7:58AM
Final Fantasy V and VI are coming. I doubt that square will suddenly decide to stop re-making games for easy money.
And damn it, Final Fantasy VI on the GBA is pretty much impossible to get a hold of these days. I saw it once in an EB for 20$, and didn't buy it. Why?!?!?
lizzieizzie @ Sep 8th 2008 7:04PM
Seriously? I got it at Toys R Us a few months ago for $5!!
Flint @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:39AM
My vote goes to Live A Live by Squaresoft.
I'd love to see this on the DS, it was a SNES game only ever released in Japan (although fan translations exist on emulators) and is a unique experience featuring seven stories each with a different lead character and set in different time periods (feudal Japan, the Wild West, present day, sci-fi future etc). I really think it is a genuine lost classic.
Optigon @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:52AM
I know I'll probably be the only one to say it, but I would love to see Zombies Ate My Neighbors! ported to a newer system. DS or not, I think it was a great game, and could be even better on something newer than the SNES.
theturninggate @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:11AM
I'd love to see Secret of Mana come to the system, as well as the Japanese-only sequel, Seiken Densetsu 3. The DS is a golden opportunity to finally bring that amazing game to the U.S. market.
The other game I'd really love to see remade for the DS is Kirby's Dream Course. Best golf game ever, and I imagine touch-screen controls would only make it better!
Puddles @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:19AM
- Seiken Densetsu 3
- The Fire Emblem games that never came out in English
tambre @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:26AM
secret of mana, hands down.
i would love to get my hands on a remake of that. i waited, hoping, for a ps1 remake... and then a ps2 but no luck.
anyone have any idea's why that one wasn't redone/brought back out?
tambre @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:26AM
yeah, i forgot to add lufia and lufia 2. soul blazer was amusing...
BlackDogAssault @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:28AM
The ENIX trilogy (Terranigma, Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer... the two last could use better translation, btw) and EarthBound.
AH! Also, I'm gonna be alone at this, but... E.V.O.
A new entry for Super Mario RPG. Yes, that's impossible, but who knows...
And, last, Camelot games: Mario Tennis, Golf and Golden Sun.
Peter @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:45AM
#1: Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana in the US) + Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2, never released in the US) on one cartridge and with local wireless and Wi-Fi co-op features. Pay Neill Corlett to license his translation of SD3 ( http://www.neillcorlett.com/sd3/ ) and skip the time and money otherwise spent on a US localization for SD3.
#2: Mother 1 + Mother 2 (Earthbound in the US) + Mother 3 on one cartridge.
#3: Localize Xenosaga I & II DS already!
Phantom @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:10PM
lol , they could probably just sue the translation from him , since he probably broke some copyright law or something .
Core2 @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:47AM
All the Mother games. PLEASE.
Kid Icarus. NiGHTS.
I'll be killed for saying this, but Billy Hatcher. I dunno, it seems like that game, as much of a failure as it was, could work out nicely witih better writing and a touch oriented system like the Wii or DS.
And yeah...
Peter @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:51AM
I was thinking of RPGs in my last comment, but they all must take a backseat to my personal top priority for DS remakes:
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
BUT don't bother re-making it unless you feature great local wireless multiplayer AND balanced Wi-Fi multiplayer.
My wife and I regularly play the Treasure Box mode of Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary. We would play Puzzle Fighter at least every other day if Capcom ported it to the DS.
Plus it would give us one less reason to buy a Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 (since only those consoles feature a current Puzzle Fighter port with online competitive play features).
Phantom @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:08PM
don't resist the PS3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BUY IT . PLAY IT(MGS4 , FF13(versus) , Little Big Planet) . WATCH IT ( blu rays ) .
But don't the the 3fixme (360)
Yea , I'm fanboy , but i'm a DS fanboy too .
Morning Toast @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:53AM
Ooo...remakes...hmmm...
Spy Hunter
Rush N Attack
RC Pro Am
Sidearms
F-Zero
Hit the Ice (we need a hockey game!)
Tempest
Super Sprint or Off-Road
Double Dragon II
Need some R-Type love
NARC w/ multi support
Rad Racer?
Rampart - use the stylus to shoot the cannons. Multiplayer could be neat. You on top, opponent on bottom.
TMNT would be good as mentioned by others
An original Metal Gear redo would rock too
(Sorry if any of those already got remade in DS world, I just started rambling off games I haven't seen and love.)
Maz @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:01PM
Secret of Mana and Lufia, hands down.
van @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:07PM
Guardian Legend
And... a decent Earthbound collection, combining all 3 sensual sweet Mothers
mondoz @ Jul 3rd 2008 12:41PM
Gargoyle's Quest
Phantom @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:03PM
Tales of Phantasia is something I would want to see remade on the PS3 with cutting edge graphics . But a DS remake would be great too . I would love to have a Chrono Trigger remake on PS60 (or just PS3 , as long as it's on PS3)not just a port(like the DS one) , but a complete graphical remake , and streamed music ,joystick controls etc . Mabybe even a super fast-paced JRPG combat system to replace the old one , with the traditioanal combat system as an option for Old skool gamers .
Back on topic though , for the DS i would love to see Secret of Mana ,Tales of Phantasia , AND Super Mario RPG YEAAAAAAA. ( IMO making a Super Mario RPG on DS would draw in casual gamers because of Mario , and then get quite a few of them to like RPGs , which would then lead them to buy FF and other RPGs plus the games they would have bought before , resulting in more profit for both Square ( who only , as far as i know , make RPGs of 1 kind or another)and Nintendo , making a Super Mario RPG a good move for both companies . ( because nintendo get's a bit of profit when you buy ANY DS game. )
Zealot @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:11PM
Im too young to have sentimental feelings for anything released before the late N64/PS1 era, but I still have my own remake wish-list. At the top of that list are, to echo the thoughts of an above commenter, the Fire Emblem games never released in English, especially Seisen no Keifu and Fuuin no Tsurugi. Unfortunately, given that at least Seisen no Keifu is already on the Japanese virtual console, this is almost certain never to happen.
Further down the wish-list, Pokemon G/S is obvious, and Im still pretty fond of things like SSB, Pokemon Snap, Kirby 64, etc. I only had a PS1 for about a year before I sold it for money to get a Gamecube back in 2001, so my games were mostly bargain-bin shovelware that I presently feel nothing for.
foremost final @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:19PM
With all the things I've heard comparing FFT to FFTA and FFTA2, I'd really like to see a remake of the original game for the DS.
Jeff @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:39PM
SUPER METROID.
