Konami confirms our worst fears: Castlevania Judgment for Wii

Okay, maybe we're all doom and gloom about Konami's decision to take the Castlevania franchise into the fighting game genre, but we were fine with things just the way they were. We could play a billion Dawn of Sorrows and be content for the remainder of our days. Times change, though, and so do games.
Castlevania Judgment is a reality. But, beneath its graphics and long list of Castlevania alum that comprise the game's roster of playable characters, there are some things that just might surprise you. For one, the game is totally Wi-Fi compatible. You can take the game online for some head-to-head action. Also, the title will work with the upcoming DS title, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, to unlock "bonus gameplay content." And those motion-sensitive controls? Yeah, they were spot-on. You'll be attacking with gesture-based controls, utilizing both the Wiimote and nunchuk.
Castlevania Judgment will release this fall for the Wii.

Death: "Ah, Alucard, what brings you here?"
Alucard: "I've come to destroy this castle."
Death: "Oh not that shit again."

Death: I won't ask you to return to our side, but i demand you cease you attack!
Alucard: I will not...

Death: "Well why not? What did I do to you?"

Great. Another fighting game. Sounds like I'll be giving this one a pass. I don't particularly enjoy them when they aren't Castlevania-themed. I doubt I'll enjoy one just because it is. :P
Personally, I really liked "Simon's Quest" - the RPG aspect of it appealed to me (though the codes didn't). The original gave me fits just trying to make it through the castle to any given point. I think I'd given up after trying to beat the bouncing Igor repeatedly and failing.

D'OH!!!

I was the only one with faith in this game, and it looks like I was right.
Departures from the norm can be good. Like I said before, Umbrella Chronicles was great, ...this can be as well.
HellsHammer @ Jul 1st 2008 3:59PM
For once, I think I disagree with you.
Castlevania or not, there are just too many fighting game series' out there.
Imo, even established titles like Mortal Kombat are having a hard time being relevant, anymore.
But on top of that, you've got Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Calibur 4, and Street Fighter 4 to compete with.
Also, I'm aware that the Wii has a lack of fighting games(besides Brawl), but is a random Castlevania spin-off what Wii owners really want? ....cause I want Street Fighter IV on Wii, no matter how dumbed down. Or at least a legitimate platforming Castlevania game for Wii(with whip action).
This has just left me wondering 'who's next?' to jump on the MarvelCapcom/Smash Bros. wagon and arbitrarily throw random platformer characters into a fighting game.

Yeah. Departures from the norm can be good. Just like Soul Calibur Legends, and that Donkey Kong racing game! Oh, wait...
Haohmaru @ Jul 1st 2008 3:32PM
Let's wait and see if it isn't crap. It may actually end up being a decent fighter.

Do I wish there was another 2D console Castlevania? Sure. Doesn't mean that I'm going to immediately write-off a Castlevania fighter based on little information and 4-5 blurry scans. It could be great or it could suck. I don't have enough information to make any sort of judgment call right now.
RupeeClock @ Jul 1st 2008 4:01PM
If there's anything the "Ultimate Kickboxing" peripheral has proven, with Street Fighter 3 EX, it's that Gesture based controls will most likely make for a bad fighting game.
PunchyMcJunk @ Jul 1st 2008 4:46PM
DO NOT WANT!
On the other hand, another SotN type game would be awesome. I'd play that over and over and over again, without fail. In fact, if it were somehow released on the VC, It'd probably force me to go and relive my freshman year of college all over again
Mduck @ Jul 1st 2008 5:24PM
c'mon Hinkle, this may actually end up being a decent game.
I'm pretty sure that if the game was announced for every other console except for the wii we would all be complaining about it.
I guess I'll give it a chance :\
CJC @ Jul 1st 2008 7:28PM
Who the hell let Tetsuya Nomura out his cage to make crappy character designs for another series?
Haohmaru @ Jul 1st 2008 9:44PM
Naw, it can't be Nomura. I don't see a single randomly-placed zipper on Alucard's jacket! ;)
smort @ Jul 2nd 2008 7:58AM
This is a ridiculous idea! The Castlevania games are all about simplicity; that is what makes them enjoyable.
