Rock Band 2 announced, Wii port absent [update]
Official word from on high has finally hit that EA's, well ... hit game, Rock Band, will be getting the sequel treatment. During an interview with IGN, lead designer Dan Teasdale talked up the new title, confirming DLC and instruments from the first game will be compatible with the second. Considering the game just released on Wii, we're not surprised that no Wii version of the sequel was announced.
Should Wii owners expect the sequel to release on their platform of choice? Probably, but receiving the game later means that it could possibly be gimped, like its predecessor. But, hey, it's not all gloom and doom. At least we have Guitar Hero: World Tour to look forward to, right?
Update: According to the AP, the Wii is getting the title. Later on this year, in fact.

I spit at the feet of gimped rock band! I am GH through and through!

Oh Boo Hoo! Rock Band forgot about me. Pathetic. Even a condensed version of rockband is better than any guitar hero game. I have a PS2, Wii, and X-box 360. Even rockband on PS2 is better than guitar hero 3 on 360. You are all so stuborn that you would settle for Guitar Hero out of spite. One of the things that Rockband will improve on is playable features for the wii. Accept it already. You bought an inferior system. It is not able to support the same things as a 360. If it bothers you that much...Upgrade! Don't settle for Guitar Hero.

me and about 75% of this site are staying with GH on the wii, cuz they are all compatible with each other, and we have less gimpness
il_duce620 @ Jun 30th 2008 12:12PM
Yeah, I'll third that sentiment... I actually don't even own Guitar Hero III, but just knowing that GH is fully supporting the Wii means I'm more willing to put my $$$ toward them, rather than "ghetto-Guitar Hero IV" (read: Rock Band 2).

Screw RB on Wii. Not only do they release a trashed version far too late, but an expansion is coming next month with a poor song selection. Now later this year they want people to buy the second one? I have no doubt itll be as gimped so they don't look too much like hypocrites.
Oh wait, there's GH4 with ALL the goods. GH4 all the way.

who cares? the rhythm game genre has been bloated big time and now there are waaaaay too many games. I mean, GH Aerosmith? Come on.

Is anyone worried that Harmonix might have rushed this game? It seems like they're just releasing it to compete with GH:WT.
GH:WT is a necessary release with plenty of improvements; RB wasn't perfect, but it doesn't seem to me that there's a whole lot they can do aside from improving the quality of the instruments. And, obviously, not gimping the product on Wii, but again, the Wii version seems like an afterthought.
I'm still sticking with GH unless Harmonix does something groundbreaking here.

I have been looking for a good music game to get and I have come to the conclusion that Guitar Hero 4 is the one so i am holding out for that. Don't let me down activision.
HappyFunBall @ Jun 30th 2008 1:45PM
I may reconsider my impending GH:WT purchase, if (big IF) Rock Band 2 offers customization of characters and DLC, and opens up the past DLC content for the Wii as well.
EA has left a pretty sour taste in my mouth lately with all the stupid DRM crap they're putting in Mass Effect and Spore....
tmntman @ Jun 30th 2008 2:12PM
It is interesting to see that they are going to try to get at least part of Rock Band 2 out ahead of GH:WT. It will be interesting to see if they can improve as much as Guitar Hero is expected to improve with World Tour's release or if RB2 will be little more than a different set of tracks.
As for the comments about Rock Band being "gimped", that may be true, but so was Guitar Hero III. Let's face it, GHIII gave us online with some limitations but failed to provide any expansion songs for download. Rock Band is the opposite. They are giving us an option for expanding the track list, albeit with the limitation of having to buy an entire disk instead of small song packs. But they left out online play entirely. But in the end, both got the core game play right and are a lot of fun.
The question now is if the companies will learn their lessons and produce a more complete title for the Wii next time around. Guitar Hero has already indicated that they are going to fix their biggest issue (DLC) next time. We'll just have to wait to see if Rock Band does the same.

honestly i don't see the point in holding out for this even if it does have online and dlc for the wii.
the guitar hero instruments so far have all been excellent, not one breaking on me. rb1's instruments apparenty broke a lot, and when i tried out the guitar in a shop it felt cheap and rubbish, also after playing with guitar hero guitars all my life(great song) the rb one felt weird, with the buttons in the neck and the thin strum bar, also because it has a quiet strum bar, which most people love, im different and i hate it! i use the tapping of the gh strum bar to help me keep in tune for long bits of repetative struming..
either way, guitar hero world tour at this point in time does look better than rock band 2, plus all the guitar hero 3 guitars will work;)
long live guitar hero.

So, it finally just came out on the Wii, and already they're trying to get us excited for RB2? Lame.
GH 4 Life.
PhoenixGeek @ Jun 30th 2008 4:01PM
If they make RB2 for the Wii the same as the other versions they are releasing (Online, DLC, Create a Character) then I may pick up RB so I can have the instruments ahead of time and only need the disk. If they give us another gimped game for RB2 then I'll get GH:WT since I already have one guitar that will work with it and it should have all the same features as the other versions of GH:WT.
With the cost of either set and the amount of space the instruments take up this will decide which franchise I use and stick with since I don't plan on getting both anytime soon.
sgtcamarda @ Sep 26th 2008 6:07AM
I am new to this whole RB and GH thing and have not purchased either yet. I was thinking about getting the GH now and then purchasing the RB2 later when it comes out for Wii...can you tell me if the guitar will be compatible for both?
Thank you

I think that rockband tried to hard to make it good for Xbox 360 and PS3 that they didnt consider trying to make it better for wii or ps2 and since guitar hero 3 has online play and rockband doesnt, rockband isnt that good and it gets pretty boring after a while since u just have to beat the game and play with siblings or friends... Atleast guitar hero 3 had online play so u could play people online and see how good u were against strangers and friends... i would prolly say guitar hero 3 is better than rockband even though guitar hero 3 only has the guitar but GHWT will be coming out with all the instruments if i am correct...
