Super Mario RPG alive and well!

In case you were wondering what all the fuss is about, the first footage of Super Mario RPG on the Virtual Console has surfaced. It's a rather speedy video showing bits and pieces of the acclaimed RPG, and it should be just enough to get fans excited and newcomers intrigued.

Japanese gamers are already enjoying the classic title once again, but it might be a while before it becomes available in North America. It should come out eventually -- it's been rated for Australia, and the original SNES game was never even released there in the first place!

Yes. It's far, far better than the first Paper Mario game. I love the Paper Mario series (especially the Thousand Year Door), but this game stands alone as something truly remarkable. Get it!!

If you didn't know:
Paper Mario was actually supposed to be called "Super Mario RPG 2" (ahh, how I remember reading all those articles in those old magazines) before they changed the name officially.

So in other words, Paper Mario was a "sequel".

Just as an extra fact.

They don't. But it was planned to be.

Maybe they just couldn't think of a good name in the early years of development, so they just stuck to "Part 2" as an idea.

Paper Mario was a "sequel".

'Spiritual successor' is the term you're looking for.

Also, 'Mario and Luigi's Superstar Saga' on GBA was simply called
'Mario and Luigi RPG' in Japan. Making it a 'Spiritual successor' as well.

Well, actually... now that I think about it, there is one thing that makes the two very close.

Other than the fact that the two are turn-based RPGs that allow timing of buttons to do more combos, or holding buttons to make attacks more powerful...
They do have one thing very similar: Making the typical "bad-guy" become an ally, and of course SEVEN STARS that you have to collect.

It looks like Mario and Lugi Superstar Saga was a complete remake of this but with a different storyline.

I just want this on the DS. I have a much easier time investing time in portable RPGs, and this one's perfect for that. But in that case I'd love to see it upgraded a bit in the process. Still, I may buy this when it hits the US VC just for the support. This is one of my all-time favorite games.

Combat looks really slow.

And anyway, I just can't find myself getting into SNES RPGs too much. They're simply too primitive...

Graphic-wise or Gameplay-wise?

Graphics shouldn't be a deciding factor since it's like asking someone that tic-tac-toe should have amazing graphics. In other words: It's pretty simple gameplay, and most are turn-based, so graphics should be the last thing to complain about.

As for Gameplay... you might be referring to the old-school turn-by-turn-gameplay... of which TONS of RPGs still run off of the same system nowadays, just more "advanced". I can understand if you don't like it though, realtime fighting is definitely fun.

But all-in-all you should only care about one thing in RPGs:
STORYLINE.

And SNES RPGs still rock that spot, no matter how many years pass by. (unless of course, you enjoy the emo-RPGs... you won't find any in SNES)

I mean in terms of gameplay and storyline. As for gameplay, I love turn-based battle systems, nothing wrong with them, but modern ones like the one in Persona 3 are just so much *better*.

And as for storyline... Well, for example, I think the "concept" of Chrono Trigger is excellent, and could make for a truly great story, but the characterization in that game is just so ... bad/boring/bland ... that I can't care about it. Frog is the only exception, though...

Maybe it has something to do with all the characters being little sprites, or maybe since there's none of the voice acting I've become so accustomed to...But that didn't stop me from loving Skies of Arcadia. I think...It's just that the storytelling in those older RPGs simply isn't *good*, especially since I'm so used to the *better* storytelling in today's best games.

In any case, SNES RPGs just seem, well...not-as-good as today's RPGs to me. Is that to be expected? Well, even if it is, that doesn't change the fact that I'd rather be playing a good modern RPG than a good "classic" RPG.

You must be a nintendo 64/game cube/psone/ps2 era gammer, so you are acostumed to all this new tech that only a few of snes games offered.

Its a shame how new gammer can't appreciate the beauty of old video games, what would be of current games without those old titles. NOTHING!!!!

The idea of "an RPG over Dungeons & Dragons" is what comes to mind. And understandable.
The new & sleek version over ol' reliable.

Though I wouldn't call SNES primitive. I'd say NES or before-that, are pretty primitive. :P

Actually, I've been gaming since the NES days. The first game I ever played was Zelda I, followed by Super Mario Bros. :P

But you are somewhat correct, in that I never really knew what an RPG was until Pokémon Red and Blue came out. I mean, I had *played* RPGs before that, including Super Mario RPG, but didn't really know what I was doing. It wasn't until I had played Pokémon Blue for quite a while that I really started to understand and enjoy RPGs.
