Twilight Hack protection already beaten
Nintendo's going to have to devise more minor Mii Channel upgrades, because they'll have more homebrew-killing attempts to barely camouflage. Almost immediately after the new Wii Menu 3.3 software went up and killed the Twilight Hack, coders at the HackMii blog figured out what the new code was: surprisingly, it was targeted specifically at the one Twilight Princess bug that enables homebrew loading. And they found bugs in that.Soon after, they wrote up some code that exploits the bugs in the new security code, and allows them to "fool their check into ignoring the TP hack." They have yet to release the fix, but at least we can stop panicking until the next update.
The blog post goes into explicit detail about Nintendo's update code, and it's interesting reading even if you know nothing about programming. We know this firsthand.

I bow to the coders at HackMii.. as for NoA wah wah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
Brian @ Jun 19th 2008 10:19AM
Nintendo will never stop homebrew coders.
Skippy @ Jun 19th 2008 12:48PM
I doubt they care TOO much about homebrew coders. The problem is that the hack can also be used to pirate VC and WiiWare games.
Jamar @ Jun 24th 2008 11:54AM
Who'd do that? It's too much work and if I remember correctly, the installation process cound end up permanently bricking your Wii if you don't know what you're doing.
Rocketman @ Jun 23rd 2008 12:37AM
I really hate your blogging software or your posting policy.
POST THE REFERENCE LINK AS A LINK AT THE END OF YOUR POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Alisha Karabinus @ Jun 19th 2008 11:25AM
You mean like we already do, in the "source" link, directly underneath the tags? Right at the bottom of the post, where you seem to think it should be?
Fryguy @ Jun 19th 2008 11:43AM
@Alisha: You know, I never would have seen that if you didn't mention it. It would be a lot clearer if the reference link is posted in the body of the text (or even the Source link itself), with a descriptive link name.

These people must be very, very smart to understand the wii hardware as well as they do. Sounds like a lot like the time when Windows XP was released; Bill Gates (or some other Microsoft exec.) stated that Windows XP couldn't be decrypted and about twenty minutes or so after its release, someone figured out how to decrypt it and they were able to put it on P2P networks. Same thing here; people always can find away around encryption. Period.
Nils @ Jun 19th 2008 11:19AM
Dude... This was known about 6 houres after the 3.3 update... you guys are a bit slow...
CJLopez @ Jun 19th 2008 1:53PM
Yeah, it may have been only 6 hours after the patch, but, hadn't you realized the wiifanboy only reports Wii concerning news and only look at the scene section when its really impressing news
Is their choice either they want to publish news on the scene the moment it happens or days later, when the thing is for sure
kravex @ Jun 19th 2008 11:33AM
People do realise that these hacks are probably the main reason Nintendo won't unlock the SD card or make develop a HD for the Wii.
We have no reason to praise or thank these people.
ApolloIV @ Jun 19th 2008 12:03PM
What? Why do you say that? Hackers and Home brewers have been around forever. To say that Nintendo won't do this or that because of Home brewers is just crazy. And if that for some reason is true shame on Nintendo. I think one of the main reasons the PSP has been able to keep up with the DS (or at least remain profitable) is the Homebrew hacks for it. I salute HackMii for their efforts and can't wait to see what they have next.
hombl @ Jun 19th 2008 3:56PM
Well, since the Hackers/Homebrewers are already using the SD card like the "honest" folk should be able to, I don't really think Nintendo would be opening up any new opportunities for them...
Nigeria @ Jun 19th 2008 11:44AM
I might have to install the homebrew channel, just so I can keep my region free. Never having done this sort thing before leaves me a little overwhelmed, though.
ApolloIV @ Jun 19th 2008 12:06PM
Sit down with a couple of hours of free time and some snacks and it'll work out fine. The reason I say a couple of hours is because you want to make sure you get everything right. After that you'll notice you have to do the same stuff to make this work as you did other things.
nintendo1889 @ Jun 19th 2008 12:28PM
Sure, the homebrew scene is s gray area. Nintendo probably won't release any kind of HDD or the like. Now, let's say we have a game, like Mario RPG or Chrono Trigger, in cartridge form, and they no long work. What do we do? Wait for them to release said games on the Virtual Console? Or do we resort to using homebrewn emulators? If you own the original cartridge and system, what's the big deal? You'd think they'd get it by now that there are numerous people who want play these games.
aplen22 @ Jun 19th 2008 11:57AM
Nintendo is just going through the same growing pains that Microsoft went through with the Xbox last generation. Once they finally give up when they realize it's not worth their time, this won't be an issue anymore. Looking at what the homebrew community is now on Xbox is a testimate of what great things can happen when you stop blocking things in your console.
And for you uptight babies that say it spurs piracy, give me a break! Oh my god! So russia or who ever owns the rights won't be getting more royalties from tetris. Boohoo! Look at the Iphone, if it wasn't for the homebrew community, we wouldn't have native apps!
Jono @ Jun 19th 2008 12:02PM
The bugs are pretty easy to spot even if you dont have a huge knowlegde of coding.
Although i havnt updated id miss my custom GHIII discs XD
@kravex
Homebrew has nothing to do with Nintendo not opening the SD card slot to be used as an expansion to the current memory. Its because Nintendo are stuburn when it comes to things like this. Also if the security wasnt so lax this wouldnt be a problem for them.
Homebrew will improve the console let people code things for it that Nintendo dont want to do like media centres.
Crazylink @ Jun 19th 2008 12:26PM
For all we know, Nintendo could be going "Just as keikaku*" right now.
(*keikaku means plan)
Patius @ Jun 19th 2008 1:25PM
eh, this battle will never end.
Microsoft is still fighting the modding community today,
and I bet 5 years from now, so will Nintendo.
So will Sony.
They all have the same stance. If anything, Nintendo is the softest. It hasn't even prosecuted people who make Emulators, but Sony and Microsoft have.
CJLopez @ Jun 19th 2008 1:56PM
Thats because nintendo doesn't prosecute, they employ em
Mickey @ Jun 19th 2008 1:55PM
What exactly does the Homebrew and twillighthack do anyways? does it give you access to stuff that normally you have to pay for? I will just avoid it altogether because I barely have the time to play the stuff I pay for already.
CJLopez @ Jun 19th 2008 1:57PM
Run homebrew, like, playing Quake 1, yes, that old PC game, using the wiimote and nunchuck on your Wii
Running emulators
Downloading and Installing VC and WiiWare games
check www.wiibrew.org to see a complete list of things to do with homebrew on Wii
m-p{3} @ Jun 19th 2008 2:32PM
If those kind of hack would be mainly used for homebrews, I don't think Nintendo would be doing such updates. There are some nice projects running, like the Homebrew Channel and the Miidia Player.
However, some people are stealing games on VC, and I don't agree with this kind of behavior. Playing a backup of an already owned game seems fair-use to me.
Mr Khan @ Jun 19th 2008 3:10PM
I wonder if Nintendo will make this into a big thing, like the long duel between Sony and that one guy (and now i forget his name) over the PSP that was well-publicized a while ago
Although, i think Nintendo would be a lot slower on the uptake if everyone and their grandma wasn't talking it up. I'm not saying you shouldn't report it, but if the homebrewers themselves wanted to be safe, they'd keep their stuff quiet, at least for a while
