No plans for external hardware, says Fischer
After screwing up and subsequently apologizing, Nintendo Europe's Laurent Fischer wants to get back to work. He does so by addressing the ever-present desire for extra Wii storage space. Yeah, kind of a touchy subject to bring up so soon after Fischergate, but there has to be some big revelation, right?
Well, apparently Nintendo are "working on a solution," but "there's no plan to issue hardware." Fischer is referring to an external hard drive, a device thatgeeks and otaku gamers are eager to get. Iwata gave everyone hope, but those sentiments have been pretty much squared away in the bollocks box. There's always talk, always rumors and speculation, but still no storage -- and now, no plans.

I don't know, after NoE said there were "no plans for a redesigned DS" the day before they announced the DS Lite, I just don't listen to them anymore. I'm still holding out hope...

Maybe "there's no plan to issue hardware" means just that. They could be working on a software solution (driver?) that would allow any external USB drive to work, not necessarily a Nintendo-branded one. Not really getting my hopes up, though.
sn1per @ Jun 17th 2008 11:12AM
This is what I'm hoping. He simply said there's no plan to issue hardware. Sony doesn't issue hardware either, but they support user-replacement of the internal HDD in the ps3. Microsoft issues hardware, but I don't know if nintendo really wants to go that route, because a big part of the cost of the 360 HDDs is a process which makes the drives unusable on anything other than the 360.
Bad Mojo @ Jun 17th 2008 11:00AM
Maybe a software solution is in the works.... but maybe they'll go the MS and Sony route:
Introducing the NEW Wii... now with an internal 2GB drive!!!!
Everyone rejoices and more Wii shortages to cripple eager gamers.
/end sarcastic rant
But seriously... it can't be that hard to make a software solution unless Nintendo is just too close-minded and close-platformed to make it a reality.
ChunkyB @ Jun 17th 2008 11:33AM
Isn't this good news. When they say they're working on a solution but not going to issue hardware, then maybe that means that they'll open up the SD card or let us use any usb drive. This is really good news. The last thing I want is some ghetto Nintendo brand hard drive. I already have plenty of usb hard drives.
benmully @ Jun 17th 2008 11:37AM
I'm hoping for existing device support. Those USB ports could still come in handy!

gatorsax2010 holding out for what exactly can you explain also can wii fanboy also explain
because i for one can clearly see a sd card reader slot in the front of every single wii ever made now use basic brain power to understand the point of this slot
wii does not will have not a harddrive... YOUR ALL FUKING INSANE WHY WOULD A SYSTEM CAPABLE OF READING AND WRITING TO FLASH INTERNALLY EXTERNALLY AND ALSO VIA THE GAMECUBE MEMORY CARD SLOTS REQUIRE 1950S OUT DATED SLOW READING EASY TO BREAKDOWN HARDDRIVE
ALL MEDIA AND MUSIC IS DIRECTLY ACCESSABLE FROM BOTH THE FLASHDRIVE AND THE SD CARD SLOT ONLY ENCRIPTED DATA HAS TO BE TRANSFERED AND THERES A WOPPING 512MB INTERNAL SO THAT SWOPPING IS AT A BEAR MINIMUM LIKE ONCE A FUKING MONTH SHIT LIKE THAT
AS FOR DOWN LOADS PATCHES FREEBYS ETC ALL VIA WIFI ANYTHING THAT GETS STORED ON PS3S HARDDRIVE CAN ALSO BE STORED ON WIIS FLASH OR SD CARDS
THERES NOOOOOOOOOOO NEED FOR HARD-DRIVES THERE OBSOLETE
HARDDRIVES YESTERDAY FLASH TOMORROW EVERYONE WITH AT LEAST HALF A BRAIN NOWS THAT AS """""FACT""""""
FLASH FAST HARDDRIVES SLOW EVERYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN AT LEAST NOWS THAT AS """"""""""FACT"""""""""""
HARDDRIVE LIKE NINTENDO SAID YOUR ALL GEEKS
Haohmaru @ Jun 17th 2008 12:36PM
Just to be helpful, I think your Caps Lock key is stuck.
Chadyasotora @ Jun 17th 2008 12:53PM
I COMPLETELY agree with you. No need for hard drive.
tkAshur @ Jun 17th 2008 12:32PM
I kinda wouldn't mind if they just released a Wii with a few more gigs...but I would prefer if they wouldn't. If they offered you to send in your wii and they upgrade the memory to whatever you wanted, sure. But I feel I would lose all my VC and WiiWare...not to mention my near complete Smash bros file. When I sent in my DS to get the scratches on the screen fixed...they didn't send me back my original DS, but a new one(same old fatty kind). How do I know? My Animal Crossing file(and a few other Wifi games) said I wasn't using the DS I registered the game to. But back to the issue at hand, I feel its possible they might do the same thing with the Wii.
TomSkib @ Jun 17th 2008 1:33PM
I'm sure it'll just be a flashdrive with a Wii logo on it just like the sd card. Either that or open up the sd card.
TurboFool @ Jun 17th 2008 1:33PM
All they need to do is enable better support for the SD slot. So yes, clearly no additional hardware is needed, as the system already has an SD slot, not to mention USB ports. Third-parties have SD cards, flash drives and yes, hard drives, all wrapped up. So Nintendo needs only to provide the software support for one of those options and they're set. Makes sense to me.
Sonic_13 @ Jun 17th 2008 1:43PM
I'm glad to hear this. I've said all along that releasing an external hard drive would be a mistake. The best option is to better utilize the SD slot. It's the cheapest option and already available to all gamers.
I look forward to finding out what they have in mind.
Mr Khan @ Jun 17th 2008 3:35PM
This actually sounds more hopeful than before. From Iwata's word that they are "acknowledging the issue" to Mr. "Geeks and Otaku"'s word (probably part of the penance he had to go through to keep his job) that they are actually working on a solution
And Nintendo states the obvious. Wii doesn't need a hard-drive. A console where everything is designed with 512 MB of storage in mind is never going to have a practical need for 50 GB of storage. SD storage should be perfectly adequate, and interchangeable even if they don't upgrade to support SDHC
SImpression @ Jun 17th 2008 6:33PM
I have a feeling they will E3 it if you know what i mean.
Gewurztraminer says: R.O.B. is the last Cylon! @ Jun 17th 2008 9:14PM
Personally, I am only just now having storage issues with the internal memory. Deleting a few unnecessary items or *gasp* making use of that SD slot should solve my problems in the meantime.
Having all of my channels available all the time was a nice idea, but I guess I'll just change and adapt. So, why so many channel pages then? hmm...
