DS Daily: Does the lack of paddle support make you rethink your purchase?
For us, the lack of paddle support in the demo for Arkanoid DS has us rethinking whether or not we're going to pick up the game, as a lot of the appeal for us was being able to play with the awesome paddle. Now, we're kind of forced to wait and see. What about you all? Feel the same way? Are you already settled, either way, on what you're going to do?

As stated the last time this question came up, the lack of the paddle means I'm not going to get the games at all. The only real interest was that they had the paddle add-on to make the games more interesting...why pay for either game when it doesn't have that extra history and fun?
Pwortlandbwoy2 @ Jun 10th 2008 8:27AM
Such a shame.. apparently american money means nothing to Taito/Square Enix. I really really want these games, and I really really want the paddle. I just hate shilling out an extra $50 to have it.
On another note...has anyone confirmed that an import ds paddle will even work with the American versions of Arkinoid/Space Invaders Extreme???
harvest_god @ Jun 10th 2008 8:43AM
Well, I tried the jap version of Space Invaders Extreme ages ago on my R4 (yeah, yeah...), and even with the standard controls it was extremely (pun not intended) fun and addicting, so I say... give the game a chance. So, you can't control it with some shmansy piece of plastic, big deal.
I can't say anything about Arkanoid, though...
igorponweed @ Jun 10th 2008 8:54AM
Hmm... lets see, like I always thought, the paddle does not work with American copys. AMERICAN. It's not like the DS is region free so you could import it from Japan. Oh wait! Yes you can.
nil @ Jun 10th 2008 9:15AM
I'm definitely getting Space Invaders Extreme regardless. I had no plans to import the paddle anyway.

For me, the paddle was an added bonus. I was sold once I heard Arkanoid and SIE would be only $19.99. It is a little disappointing the option isn't available, but I'm fairly certain I'll have plenty of fun using a standard control scheme.
Navarr @ Jun 10th 2008 9:35AM
I remember you guys saying that you imported your Paddle. Well, if there is no US game out that had the paddle with it, why would Nintendo publish a demo that used it? Maybe its just a feature that will be in the finished product but not in the demo? Or maybe our economy is going down the drain faster than we think and they can't afford to make Paddles.
*shrugs* Who knows?

I like the sad face on the paddle pic, hehe.
No, in all seriousness, I was never planning on getting either title. But I did think the whole paddle thing was cool, and that's ridiculous that they couldn't bring over that peripheral/mechanic to the States. Are we just soooo unworthy that we can't get this cool stuff, time and time again?
miruki @ Jun 10th 2008 10:24AM
I-i like it too.... *_*
(and besides that I really have nothing to say since I'm not into these kind of games.)
Mr Khan @ Jun 10th 2008 3:42PM
I third that sentiment
peteL @ Jun 10th 2008 10:27AM
It's very disappointing to me. I never imported either game or a paddle, as I was waiting for the domestic release of all three.
Too bad we won't be seeing the paddle for retail in the u.s. Honestly, it seems like a dumb move. It's an added bit of nostalgia that would make a seemingly excellent purchase in Arkanoid and Space Invaders even better.
I will be picking up Space Invaders, paddle or not, but I think I'll be skipping Arkanoid.
Roto13 @ Jun 10th 2008 10:27AM
Just get the Japanese version if a paddle is so important to you.
Rob @ Jun 10th 2008 11:18AM
From Wired's website: "A Square Enix spokesperson told Wired.com this morning that the U.S. versions of the games will retain support for imported Paddle Controllers."

No need to freak out yet!
Pwortlandbwoy2 @ Jun 10th 2008 11:33AM
Nice find Rob! I still would be nice to know for sure that the import paddle and the American version are going to play nice together though. Guess I'll just wait for release and find out.
Jacksons @ Jun 10th 2008 12:29PM
If the paddle truly doesn't work I'll still pick up Space Invaders, but It'll be the PSP version.
Tyler @ Jun 10th 2008 1:46PM
I am pretty sure that the demo you played has no paddle support because there is no paddle in America. Remember, it was a *demo*. I don't really understand why you are freaking out about this and nay-saying the game. For all we know, Nintendo could release the paddle in America right before these two games and the final versions will have support.
I just think it is a little rash to start deciding if you are going to buy a game based on a stripped-down demo that doesn't include support for a peripheral unreleased in America. They probably just didn't include support because (1) you're the only people in America with a paddle; and (2) because it is a download play demo and needs to be as small as possible.
Come on guys. Stop trying to turn people around on these games.
J.K. @ Jun 10th 2008 4:35PM
I could care one little bit about having the paddle or not. It's a great device for sure for authenticity sake, if you were talking about the actual original versions of the games, which these are not. Also, it's just another thing to stuff in your pocket and have to lug around uncomfortably.
Honestly anyone whining over this not coming and then saying they're not sure or definitely not buying these cheaply priced $20 games probably really weren't all that interested or fans in the first place if the paddle was the selling point and not the games themselves...and that's really sad and says a lot.
I didn't like really that it wasn't an option, or at least we're assuming at this rate it isn't since I don't think anyone has a final copy yet with the game 10 days out still, but it won't ruin my day. I wanted these for the interesting new modes, artistic and audio design, quality established gameplay, and smart price point. So what if there isn't a wheel, using the stylus will be just as responsive and definitely not as slow as using a d-pad which still could be considered acceptable.
raindog @ Jun 10th 2008 6:36PM
Whether I buy the US or Japanese versions or whatever doesn't matter a lot, because I still would have ordered the paddle just in hopes of eventual homebrew support. A decent version of Tempest, without a clunky homebrew controller from Ebay, finally seems within reach.
harbl @ Jun 11th 2008 11:41PM
1: Download Japanese version.
2: There is no step 2.
Ethan @ Jun 11th 2008 7:08PM
I does make me want one with a face on it.
