DS Daily: Adventurous at heart

With the latest from Lucasarts leaving fans of the adventure genre who also happen to own a DS in a state of sadness, we're left wondering why nobody fails to see the potential here. But, such a discussion is one not aimed at this particular daily topic (and, quite honestly, tipped in one favor). You see, we were wondering a bit about your most favorite adventure titles.

Eventually, we could see something in the way of these classic titles on the handheld, whether it come from the homebrew community or a reputable company with a long history of titles, so we would like to know what you'd want on your handheld? What are you favorite adventure titles? What would you like to play again on the DS?

Well you have probably my most favorite as the graphic in the post.

The original Space Quest on the Apple IIgs is where I learned to type.

All the old Sierra Adventure games were great, Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Larry, Phantasmagoria, The Quest for Glory, Laura Bow, Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist...

I recently bought a great Space Quest collection from EB games, it says Windows only, but I can run them on my Mac with various emulators.

That old Sierra games can be played also with ScummVM on the DS. Please take a look at the official compatibility list: http://scummvm.drunkencoders.com/#whichgames

Monkey Island and Loom... although I tried ScummVM, my CD copies are missing the music files >.< playing Loom without audio is pretty much pointless.

I liked the the last 2 of Monkey Islands and I would also like to play with the first two ones.The first part of Longest Journey could be done nicely too, or it could have a great sequel (instead of the one which is already out) in the same -old- style.

Where to even start on this one? Space Quest, Quest for Glory, King's Quest, Monkey Island, and the list could go on for a while. However, with that in mind, the DS has really brought back a lot of that style of gaming. It's a great platform for it. With Syberia potentially planned, we have another pretty good game coming out. There are already numerous adventure games and ScummVM (noted above) will work to play a good number of older games.

I will say that the really old games that required keyboard/typing got a little frustrating. I remember trying to climb the beanstalk in KQ1 - had to give up because I kept falling off when using just the keyboard. :P However, the typing was awesome and you could get some great responses from really off the wall stuff.

I would disagree that the cart size is too small for ports. The older games are really, really small. However, I can see that they would want to upgrade the graphics a little for some of them. Still, that shouldn't bump the size up to a really high level. I believe that Tierra Soft (AGDInteractive?) managed to re-create KQ1 and 2 in VGA with a reasonable file size and are working on QG2. If some people working in their spare time can do that, surely the larger companies can as well.
