Mario Kart Wii tournament provides sort-of-interesting new content
The first Mario Kart Wii tournaments were no big deal, offering pretty much the same kind of Mario Kart action you'd enjoy normally, but with more people involved. The latest tournament, which is available until the 9th, surprised us with a new level based on Super Mario Galaxy! It's ... a really boring track (in that it's just a disc), but Galaxy Colosseum is, at the very least, proof that there is still new content to be found in Mario Kart, probably on the game disc.
What's even more interesting is the task: defeating four of Galaxy's Topman enemies in a Boss Attack challenge -- a new gametype! If Nintendo keeps this up, Mario Kart Wii will have a long, healthy life online. If not, we'll just go back to being disappointed.

Could be hidden on the disc, I suppose. Once again i shall dredge up PSO as a reference. I believe the "Tower" quests (the only quests to feature the reaper-esque enemy Il Gil) worked like that, where the only way to access the tower was via the online quest
Could just be loaded right to RAM, though. Someone needs to find out. The latter possibility enables more creative solutions for the future.

Trust me, it's on the disc. With my ghetto-superstar internet connection, I'd know if it was downloading it.

Played this a few times last night...very interesting to say the least! I would like to hear peoples strategy on it...my second time was like 1:15 odd something.

The top(s) charge at you, so the best bet is to turn backwards just it charges at you close to the edge. Then use the boosts at them.
I got 24 seconds at the end!

1. Pick a vehicle with good handling (weight doesn't seem to matter)
2. Go straight toward the first topman, and it bounces you right to your first mushrooms
3. Use your mushrooms consecutively, right after you hit a topman
4. Use all 3 mushrooms to drop the first two topmen, then use the time it takes for more topmen to drop to get more mushrooms
5. Try to get the third topman down with just two mushrooms and if you're lucky, the fourth comes right in front of you, just waiting to get dropped by your last mushroom
6. Move backward to turn large quantities, only tune your direction moving forward
These should get you going!

That is much different than how I tried to do it (evident by my time) I will give that a roll. Thanks!

"If not, we'll just go back to being disappointed."
And we were disappointed with MK online, when? How can we "go back" to a state we were never in?
Waffala @ Jun 2nd 2008 11:51PM
That's what I was thinking.
Wailord_4_Life @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:49PM
Disappointed in MK Wii ? wha ?
Peronsally I'm disappointed in disappointing blogs, with disappointing authors, that write disappointing posts.
Gewurztraminer says: R.O.B. is the last Cylon! @ Jun 2nd 2008 7:51PM
You neglected to mention the disappointing comments
Scotty @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:54PM
I don't think he meant disappointed in MK Wii or MK Wii online, but Nintendo's online service in general...which has mostly been very disappointing.
JC Fletcher @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:55PM
I meant the tournaments. New stuff like this is much more interesting than just a regular race.
Mr Khan @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:49PM
I was disappointed in the tournaments because they weren't tournaments
When i think Tournament, i think of the modes included in Melee and Brawl, i think NCAA March Madness
What they're giving you is a competition, not a tournament

After a lot of optimizing, I finally got ~18s time. "Yes, send data!"... "bling bling... bling bling... Unable to connect.". &%"#¤&%¤#! Why can't I *RESEND* a previous time?
Timdogg @ Jun 2nd 2008 4:26PM
I think that it will resend your best time when you go to "send data."
Am I wrong?
Master Yami @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:17PM
Just finish the challenge again. Don't have to set a record. Then you can resend your No. 1 score.
B-ZaR @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:49AM
Oh, right... thanks. *whistles*
Move along! Nothing to see here!
Inanimate @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:07PM
This is such a creative tournament, I am so proud.

I've got 14.5 seconds which is just over a second from the WR. My tips are:
Choose a heavy character and vehicle.
You *must* use the turning on the spot technique 'TOTST' (press slide, then power then turn).
Ok first off, boost to the left to get the power up box but stop almost immediately. The top will go spinning past you near the edge, use TOTST to spin left, boost and kock the top off...
Get ready for the next top. Its best to TOTST and face the centre; just as it bounces down boost hit it, then boost again. This should knock it off the platform. (try to hit the top first as its falling into play).
Now hopefully you will be near the centre again and can collect the next power up box before the last two fall down...
When they drop boost into one of them, then again which should see him off. You will now be near the edge of the platform yourself. Now with your last boost TOTST again and knock the last top off...
Hope that helps...
