Final Fantasy IV trailer speaks to us
For those of you who wondered after the last Final Fantasy IV trailer if the North American version of the DS remake would have English voices, here's your answer. Well, above here. Up there, in the video part. Turn your speakers on. The latest trailer, focusing on the story of (non-Batman) dark knight Cecil, features fully-voiced cutscenes, in English.
Square Enix may like to charge more for their DS games, but at least they are willing to sink some money into the the development of the things. The high-quality presentation of this game almost justifies the Square Enix Tax.

Whoa, it's actually good, solid voice work, which isn't surprising coming from the Square-Enix camp. I like Kain's voice, but I hope it isn't over-the-top. Other than that, I'm very excited about playing this game, since it's the only Final Fantasy I haven't completed (got to level 75 in Final Fantasy XI, if that's any indication). Make us proud, Squenix!
DG10050 @ Jun 1st 2008 3:35PM
Yay! That was really good. Thank you Square Enix for casting voices that don't suck.
Jhongerkong @ Jun 1st 2008 4:01PM
Can't wait to hear "You spoony bard!" in english
TX2 @ Jun 1st 2008 4:17PM
MY GOD! was that Dan Green as Kain!? I can't think of better reason to purchase this now.
mikelhend @ Jun 1st 2008 4:26PM
I get so sick of people saying "the square enix tax" -- if you look at the games the produce, those that are more expensive (e.g. FF XII and FF III), they are 128MB ROMs, versus the amazingly still 32MB or 64MB ROMs you find with most current releases. The 128MB ROMs indicate both better quality graphics and audio, but also are more expensive to make (a little...).
Not trying to be a crank, but give it a rest! I'm so sick of paying $60 for Xbox 360 and PS3 releases that suck, that $40 for a good game like FF III is not a rip off at all.
Nigeria @ Jun 1st 2008 4:32PM
Final Fantasy 3 sucked, in my opinion.
chispito @ Jun 1st 2008 5:03PM
Whoa whoa whoa, cool the fanboy jets a minute.
There have been other large games at the regular price point (EBA), so I don't buy into your larger ROM argument. Squenix simply has fan/brand loyalty such that it can afford to price gouge.
Hopefully some of the new JRPGs in development by other developers and distributors will alleviate this.
WiiFTW @ Jun 1st 2008 4:38PM
Holy shit that alone mad me want this game. I was thinking about getting it, but this makes me want to go out immediately and buy it despite the fact that it isn't out yet.
mikelhend @ Jun 1st 2008 4:51PM
FF III wasn't stupendous, but was the first decent RPG for the DS ("true" RPG... not TRPG or action RPG, which there have been a million of). FF XII was quality, provided you like that style of character management. There have been a lot of crap RPGs for the DS... in general, there's a lot of crap for the DS...
SephFinale @ Jun 1st 2008 7:29PM
I lol at the fact that his name is spelled "see-sill", and pronounced "sesyl". FF4 for GBA made me think Cecil was a badass. Now I'm under the impression that Yahtzee has of most JRPG characters...
Gendreavus @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:14AM
I thought the pronunciation was weird as well. That's either going to drive me mad the whole time playing it, or cause me to always read Cecil that way...And I will agree that the 'brooding hero' approach gets used all too often, however I'm willing to forgive FFIV, since if Cecil really does end up that way, that would make him the original brooding hero, and you've always got to give the originals their credit.
rikki @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:46AM
Uh, that's a completely valid pronunciation of the name "Cecil"...and it's always been how his name was pronounced.
That said, I'm with Yahtzee too. The new graphics have really stripped most of the tolerability from the character designs. Yeah, they were always ridiculous if you bothered to look at Amano's art, but they had to make things sensible to fit within a 16 x 16 sprite.
Now we have to see that generic pretty-boy face Squeenix uses for 90% of their male protagonists and the ridiculous clothing during every pre-rendered cutscene, and now we know that Cecil is "supposed" to sound kinda like a teenager. (Do my ears deceive me when they say his VA is Yuri Lowenthal?)
romeuruiva @ Jun 1st 2008 7:58PM
Wow! Amazing game! Amazing voices!!! FF4 DS will be the best RPG for DS. mikelhend, you're right, "There have been a lot of crap RPGs for the DS". And now? FF5 DS? FF6 DS? Hopes...
SephFinale @ Jun 1st 2008 8:27PM
You played WEWY?
Yan @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:24AM
wow sounds like a movie. that yuri lowenthal, great voice for cecil. kain's was alright. IMO they should have gotten steve blum for kain.
palom and parom reminds me of the kids from FFCC RoF
Matthew Moore @ Jun 2nd 2008 12:28AM
hehe. He said "ought"
I am glad they are doing English voice overs however the make or break for me and this game is the save system. I got 70% through FF3 but went crazy with the save system.
mint08 @ Jun 2nd 2008 5:58AM
Is this going to be a turn-based RPG? I'm hoping it's an ARPG, since the stylus really counts as a good mouse substitute and would work for real-time battles. Summon Night: Twin Age FTW
Yan @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:38PM
dot dot dot
this is a remake of Final Fantasy IV with updated graphics and other features. story still remains the same.

I'm super psyched about this as it's my favorite RPG of all time. The simple fact that you had a set party, set skills, learned new talents by leveling (not saving for crappy books), had a really semi-unique moving story, lots of emotion, and just so much more wrapped into it the game always stood out. Being that it was never and overkill RPG (over 40hours) it was a great game to dig into and not get bored along the way to nice pacing.
Having FFCCRoF and knowing the % of text vs talk it should be that any of those semi to totally pivotal bits of the game will be verbalized and in a few spots, have some FMV to back it up too as the trailer shows. Square really has outdone themselves on this task after learning so much from their FF3 engine they improved for RoF and now into this.
I do have to say I'm with the 'square tax' group as they've been abusing my pocketbook since 1991 with FF2 on SNES (FF4 this game.) They wanted $60USD for it when everything else was $50, and a few years later they wanted $70 for Final Fantasy 3 (6 correct numbering) and then $80 for Chrono Trigger. Thankfully they only hosed me on FF2 as FF3 I got at PlayCo for 1/3 off when the store was going under, and CT I got a good deal later for $50 at Target. The efforts they put into their RPGs were no greater than Enix and a few other gems, yet all those were $50 at launch. Square was and still is notable for hosing their Final Fantasy fanbase with nasty taxation on Nintendo systems ONLY. I don't recall them doing it with new series stuff that didn't have a following (Secret Of mana/evermore, nor with later PSX titles too or PS2...even the Final Fantasy's.) I never understood the BS, and the reason I had FF3 when it was new was because it was gifted I think for Christmas so it was someone elses $40 otherwise I would have gone coupon/ad hunting or waited.
On this one sadly I'll probably pony up the $40 but it does make me mad.
Kurin @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:35AM
Hey, FF3 cost 50 (almost 80US$) here, you know. This will probably cost the same...
Nyx @ Aug 26th 2008 12:03PM
Wow at the end where the guy says "bid farewell to your blood-stained past." reminds me of when Kain(From Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen) describes the item Flay; "These curious devices hurl bolts of whirling energy and eviscerate
my human enemies by stripping ragged flesh from blood-stained bone."
I find it funny that both characters are named Kain. Gah, I need to play Blood Omen again. I miss it. T_T
