First Wario Land details Shake things up

Given Sega's apparent inability to commit to a fully 2D platformer on the Wii, we might have to rely on Nintendo to deliver the goods. Which is to say: a Wario Land Shake fact sheet has found its way on to the 'net, and appears to suggest that the game, revealed only yesterday, will be a brand new, exclusively 2D platform title on a home console -- in 2008. Sweet!
Obviously, while we're not quite jumping from armchair to sofa in excitement just yet, Japanese blogger Sinobi also describes Shake as a "2D action" game, while NeoGAF users Anihawk and Teknoman translated some of the small print, and discovered that it promised cel-shaded characters, hand-drawn animation and backgrounds, and that the game was, in their words, "most likely 2D."
According to the NeoGAFfers, there will also be 20 stages (taking in jungle, ruins, desert, and ocean locations), vehicles such as rockets and submarines, but no multiplayer. As for the Shake in the title, that refers to a whole range of actions that can be performed with the Wiimote -- by shaking your controller, you'll be able to uncover hidden locations, shake enemies (who then dispense coins), and much more.
Make the jump for the full, larger version of the fact sheet.

OH YES!
I still bust out the original Warioland for the Game Boy every now and again. Solid gameplay, solid game, nice difficulty curve. That was the peak of Nintendo handheld sidescrollers.
I will be picking this up.

Finally some good news after the giant load of crap Ubisoft dumped on Wii owners yesterday!
Knema007 @ May 29th 2008 10:30AM
Man, that was a huge load of crap.

This looks really interesting. I've never played any Wario Land games and haven't even heard of them, so I look forward to more details. Anyone with first hand experience able to describe the experience?
oxymoron @ May 29th 2008 10:18AM
That looks pretty fun

Leave it to Wario to buck the trends and bring old-school back to the consoles. Maybe if it does well, other developers will take notice that there's a market for great 2-D platformers on home consoles (you listening, IGA?).

Am I the only one that this sounds REALLY gimmicky to?
Zachary Hinchliffe @ May 29th 2008 2:06PM
*sigh* Voted down. Guess I'll have to explain myself.
Okay. You've got a 2D platformer. On the Wii. (That's a very, very good thing.) However, everything in the game involves shaking the Wii Remote? I mean, maybe if there was different gestures for different things? But shaking the remote for everything just sounds silly. I mean, why wouldn't you just have a context-sensitive "action" button?
DISCLAIMER: I am a Nintendo fan.
samfish @ May 29th 2008 2:26PM
What's the difference between an action button and a shake command? You could just as well say "why not just shake the controller instead of having an action button?"
Zachary Hinchliffe @ May 29th 2008 3:25PM
Because shaking is annoying and tires the arms. I dunno, maybe it's just me. It's not that I'm saying that Wii Remote controls are bad, it's just the concept of shake to do !!EVERYTHING!! that turns me off. I'd rather have motions that make sense, like in Wii Sports or Mario Kart, or even a shake that performs one action ala Mario Galaxy. Not shake to do !!EVERYTHING!!.

This has WiiWare written all over it.
Aly Hawana @ May 29th 2008 11:21AM
That's cool and all... but what'll the price be? Will it be on a disc or will it be as a Wiiware download? I think it would make more sense as a downloadable game.
Haohmaru @ May 29th 2008 11:47AM
Considering the price tag in Japan is at 4,800 yen I don't think this will be a Wii Ware title, but a full retail release. Which hopefully means there will be plenty of substance to it!
ECG @ May 29th 2008 1:16PM
I will buy this off of nostalgia alone, I loved the Wario Land games.
ChrisCanberg @ May 29th 2008 8:23PM
Wario!! Ha ha ha!!
It is about time that Wario Land gets brought back.
PiemanPieman @ May 29th 2008 4:13PM
I can't really make out anything on said sheet, but it seems like just shaking to do...shaking things. Give me movement with the d-pad and we're golden.
Mr Khan @ May 29th 2008 5:13PM
Considering hand-drawn backgrounds, i'd err on the side of a retail release, but given only 20 levels, i would err on a WiiWare title
20 levels doesn't seem like much, unless they made them rather large and engaging, which, being a Wario game, i could see

The warioland series was of the best things to leave the nintendo company warioland 3 being my favourite. this new warioland game makes me really happy i just hope it comes out on wiiware rather than on disc because it seems like a game that is of that type of genre.
