Majesco: Nintendo 'very enthusiastic' about Wii online functionality, helps Majesco prove it with Blast Works
Well, someone had to step in and tell Nintendo that they're doing a good job with their online platform (even though, and let's face reality here folks, they aren't right now, but we're hoping WiiWare can help change that). Majesco sees Nintendo as doing okay with the online content in titles such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii, but sees the system as able to do more elaborate and better things. Majesco is planning to make this leap into a bigger world with the release of Blast Works for the Wii.So what is so envelope-pushing about Blast Works's online functionality? Well, players will be able to create and trade content online. On top of that, players will also be able to head on over to a special website set up by Majesco, where they can browse other content made by users and, through the power of a mouse click, send that content to their own Wii. The best part? No Friend Codes necessary.
Majesco said that Nintendo has helped them make this leap into a world full of more rich and dynamic online content on a console that hasn't had it yet and sees the future as very exciting regarding Wii and the online space. You can read all about how in the MTV Multiplayer interview here.

Ooooooo, I got goosebumps reading that. I'm pretty excited about this, I hope it'll give the Wii better online functionality or at least titles that support the online function better. "players will be able to create and trade content online." Mindblowingly awesome? I think so.

Wait a minute! Nintendo can automatically check friend codes without us inputting them! I'm non-plussed
Orion @ Apr 28th 2008 1:42PM
yea that's something i never understood. the wii has a system friend code so that we would never have to input codes... so why do we need separate codes for the games?
anywho, i was planning on getting this before, and this news just seals the deal. I've been impressed with this title since day one, and I just hope that other people feel the same way. I'd hate for good games like this (like zack and wiki) to be largely unnoticed just because mario isn't on the cover.

Am I the only one who thinks Nintendo's current online platform is great?

@ Sonic 13
I'm not impressed with the Wii's online capabilities as of recent.
Last night I popped in DBZ BT3 and tried to have an online battle. And I have never, ever experienced so much lag. Not even while playing BurnOut 3 on Live with bad connections. It lagged to the point where I could take my sweet time to plan my next 20 moves while making and drinking a cup of tea.
Eventually the game froze altogether and I got bored after a minute of waiting for anything to happen and switched the whole thing off.
In this day and age, lag in a simple 2 player game is inexcusable.
Orion @ Apr 28th 2008 2:46PM
you're right, it is inexcusable... for the DEVELOPER.
The wii can handle much more than 1 on 1 online play. if you need proof of that, look at Mario Kart Wii and Medal of Honor Heroes 2 who's online is in the double digits each .
It's not the system's fault, it's poor craftsmanship on the developer's fault. And considering that Atari made DBZ 3 is it really that hard to comprehend that they cut corners? Seriously... it's Atari..
I'm very happy with the Wii's offering. While small, it's growing, and it's more than i ever expected from the system when I bought it, so everything they've offered is just icing on the cake.
And since it's free, how can we complain? I'd never buy Live because I have to pay for a service I don't hardly ever use that much (i'm more of an offline gamer)
so... sorry.. I'll take free!

I've said it before. Inherently there is nothing wrong with the Wii's online structure, its just that the rules Nintendo places on their landmark online software wind up crippling it
Nintendo quite literally is shooting themselves in the foot this time, since they have a network that clearly could be perfectly acceptable, but they insist on bogging it down with draconian regulations
I mean, look at Mario Kart Wii. The Invite system mostly negates the problems with friend codes, and the only thing that really feels like playing a sub-par online experience is the set of pre-constructed phrases, and even those are pretty comprehensive
Dash @ Apr 28th 2008 4:50PM
I agree with Khan: the Wii has full online capacity. It's just not used to it's fullest by the devs yet.
I mean, 2 Wii games (MOH Heroes and now BW) and several DS games have overcome the Friend Code system (which really is stupid, should at least be 1 per console instead of 1 per game), other games should go around too. And many games have great on-line even with it (Pro Evolution, Mario Kart and others). And DLC and chat is possible, even if not easy (freaking Pokemon DS has voice chat, why can't others?)
Congrats for Majesco for pushing for quality, and for bringing anything from Kenta Cho.

Someone had to do it eventually.
Thank you Majesco.
