Super Chart Bros. Brawl
This just in: Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold a lot. That's an observation that is neither new or particularly exciting, but put it in graph form and Brawl's phenomenal success is capable of wowing us all over again.
At first glance, we presumed those blue bars represented the first month sales of all three Smash games in the U.S. But no: those are lifetime sales of Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee respectively, while the red bar is Brawl's first month sales. That's right: in its opening month alone, Brawl not only bypassed the lifetime sales of the first title in the franchise, but has already reached 70% of its predecessor's all-time sales. Our flabbers? Consider them gasted.

NICE! :)
Oh, and count me in on that SSBM bar twice.
My bro sold my old copy of the game about a year or two back, and I bought another copy about 2 weeks before SSBB came out...
Yeah, I got so excited, I couldn't wait anymore. :P

We could either count you twice or count you once (for the second game) and the guy that bought your first game once. Gotta avoid double counting in GDP.
raindog @ Apr 23rd 2008 8:13AM
I think it depends on whether he bought it new or used.... if it's new it counts, and if it's used it doesn't (which is why video game publishers hate the success of the used biz.)
SoshiKitai @ Apr 23rd 2008 11:17AM
Well, if you really want to be technical:
The one my bro sold, someone already bought. And the one I bought was new. (I don’t like buying used games)
Roto13 @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:12PM
Melee sold well for an absurdly long time, too. :P
Roto13 @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:14PM
Why does the "lot" link lead to an article about Mario Galaxy.
Chris Greenhough @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:44PM
Because I'm an idiot. Removed.
Thanks, Roto. ;)

Projecting this onto Melee's insanely long sales legs, you could see a great winner here
Sonic_13 @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:21PM
Wow, that is impressive. Brawl's sales should easily exceed Melees, considering Melee sold well for GameCube's entire life and Wii has already passed GCN in sales.
TheWarlock @ Apr 22nd 2008 5:44PM
Awwwwww yeaaaaaaaaahhh
This is just spectacular. In a sense, I had already expected as much from the Best Game on the wii ever. That still doesn't account for my jaw dropping 3 inches lower than what I thought was medically possible.

GASTED FLABBERS!!! Wow! I wasn't expecting those kinds of sales form Brawl in the first month!
Co @ Apr 22nd 2008 6:06PM
Pretty much guarantees another one for Wii's successor.
Chris Greenhough @ Apr 22nd 2008 6:08PM
Yes, but where's Smash Bros. DS?! C'mon, Nintendo!

I lol'ed at "our flabbers? Consider them gasted." You have a way with words, Chris.

Another thing to take into account when comparing the sales for the first month is. The availability of the system. The GC was available to anyone who wanted one at that time. While the Wii, well in my area, is still hard to obtain. If you think about the people still waiting to get the Wii, and then will buy Brawl the numbers would be higher.
Of course thats just my two cents
thesmartone421 @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:02PM
Insert foot in mouth. I misread the article...
But wowzer, now that makes more sense
Go Brawl, and now we just need Brawl DS :D
hvnlysoldr @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:19PM
SUCCESS!

it will go up by another million or 3, in about 4 years, when europe/australia get it.
unless we all get the shits and mod the machine...
flameofdoom666 @ Apr 23rd 2008 12:10AM
That chart is only for U.S sales.
sniping_dreamer @ Apr 22nd 2008 9:48PM
I find it funny how Melee still sold 10,000 copies in March of '08. I bet they're the ones who don't have a Wii, and are jealous.
Perverted @ Apr 23rd 2008 9:06AM
I was going to say those numbers looked wrong but it's US only....and why is that not surprise since EU ain't got the game yet....Well I have it and that's all that really matters.
