Unboxing the Super Famicom Classic Controller
Have you put in your preorder for the Super Famicom Classic Controller yet? No? Well, you better do it quick, as the limited edition controller is a Japan-only Club Nintendo exclusive, and you likely won't be able to buy one months from now without spending some serious money on eBay. And by serious money, we mean wacky dollars.
Inside Games has received its SFC controller, and so far, it looks faithful to the original, with the added bonus of a wireless experience via hookup to the Wii remote. Alright, so it's not completely wireless, technically, but you should be used to the setup with the Wii Classic Controller. Hit the link below for unpackaging photos of the retro pad.

*Drool* Why don't we get this type of shyt?!
jaredgood1 @ Apr 15th 2008 12:37PM
It's faster and cheaper to ship these small runs from China to Japan than from China to the US (assuming they are manufactured in China). It's also faster and cheaper to ship them around Japan than it is to ship them around the US (Japan is 145,883 sq mi, USA is 3,794,066 sq mi.). Remember, these are freebies, so manufacturing and shipping costs play a big part in the equation.

This is such BS. Why can't we get this stuff here. Really what was the last thing Nintendo gave people in teh US for registering? The Zelda Collector's Edition? Come on, give us something NOA.
THRILLHO @ Apr 15th 2008 10:49AM
for brain age 2 you got a stylus set

I hope this'll be for the next free swag contest! ;)
Cambot @ Apr 15th 2008 11:29AM
Can that casing be replaced win my own SNES controller's plastic without damaging it?
Also, when do pre-orders begin? PlayAsia only says "soon."
And how much?
And what is the meaning of life?
Croove55 @ Apr 15th 2008 11:59AM
The answer for all four is "NOOOOO".
Bergasa @ Apr 15th 2008 11:49AM
That is godly. As Cambot asked, does anyone know when pre-orders start at Playasia? I put my email on the mailing list, so hopefully I will hear from them soon.
Alaska Nebraska @ Apr 15th 2008 12:06PM
Yup, signing up for the notification is your best bet--everyone will be on those things like rabid dogs. Doesn't stop me from checking obsessively, though...damn, I'm such a nerd. B...but Famicom colors are so pretty...
Bergasa @ Apr 15th 2008 12:08PM
I know, and look at that box design!
seetrapp @ Apr 15th 2008 12:14PM
If you gals and guys want SNES control so badly (albeit wired compared to the above sorta-wireless-with-an-enormous-dongle Super Famicom controller), go to RetroZone and get a Gamecube adapter.
ryan @ Apr 15th 2008 1:57PM
That looks like an equally useful deal, and you don't have to rely on somebody else maybe shipping their freebie to you.
Does anybody else just get leery of putting up the big pre-order bucks for things like this? Online business through non-Amazon/Ebay vendors still gives me the squicks. You know, like how you feel when you give a "friend of a friend's friend" money to give you some merch, and you never see your money or the merch ever again.
nefarious098 @ Apr 15th 2008 12:16PM
Oooooooo... Pretty!
Phil S. @ Apr 15th 2008 12:46PM
Don't worry folks. How often have you seen something like this get released, that turned out to be a hit, that DIDN'T get about a thousand knock offs within a month? If this thing is marketable, somebody will clone it, have no fear.
ramuji @ Apr 15th 2008 12:45PM
Cool. Mine should hopefully be arriving soon, then.
fliedlice @ Apr 15th 2008 12:58PM
would be cool to have, but i hardly use my classic controller so this wouldn't be anymore useful
beaus27 @ Apr 15th 2008 1:56PM
Don't get me wrong, I surely want of these controllers, *DROOL,INDEED!!!*
But really what's the point?..aside from the SNES nostalgia I mean.
There's already the Wii Classic controller on the market.
Granted, the W.C.C can't replicate the feel or enjoyment of this new SNES controller for the Wii.
I will pick this new controller once it reaches the U.S.
meist3r @ Apr 15th 2008 2:24PM
Now that's what I call classic.
SoshiKitai @ Apr 15th 2008 2:28PM
Classic indeed. And with the colorful buttons, my gf would love it.
...ehh, with things going on this month, I can't risk it all crushing down on Asia-is-awesome-sites that would sell this... I'll just hope someone sends a clone.
And though there is the GC-compatible-one, I would rather get this... I like my CC hooking up to my Wiimote. :)
Navstar @ Apr 15th 2008 9:14PM
I don't get it. Doesn't the Classic Controller pretty much feel like the old SNES controller?
Co @ Apr 16th 2008 1:50PM
Exactly. I would rather see an N64 classic controller released.
Armani @ Apr 15th 2008 9:49PM
I personally don't like the CC because it's a bit too thick. Also the D-Pad is nice, but it takes some time to break in. I'll be getting this the moment play asia send me the e-mail.
itchyd @ Apr 16th 2008 7:16AM
I was excited until I saw the diagram on the box. I'd rather be tethered to the console than have the freaking wiimote dangling off the end of my controller.
Karl @ Apr 17th 2008 3:48AM
A little late here, but this is cheaper and if you have the original controller...

so yeah.

I just got mine in the mail yesterday, and it saddens me to report that it is a bit disappointing. Calm your jealousy! It is cool looking and comfortable, but the buttons have a distinctively third-party feel. They have that mushy, ball-of-cotton-under-the-buttons thing going on waayy too much for my liking. Maybe in mine is just defective, or got squished under a refrigerator in shipping, but comparing this to the original SNES pad, it's just not as solid or responsive. The Classic Controller is far superior for use as an actual gaming device.
Jon Carroll @ Jun 10th 2008 9:06AM
Just got mine today from a nice ebay seller in Japan, Mine feels just as good as my old SNES pad and looks the same (PAL boy over here). For those of you who had a SNES shortly after it was first released you'll really appreciate the nostalgia. This is what makes it awesome. The SNES was such a massive leap from the NES and the build up was immense. The first time playing Super Mario World felt like nothing else, Mode 7 seriously blew us away! The rest of you younglings may well question the wow factor. Bless you for you'll never have that joy (The N64 doesn't count by the way as it was preceded by the PS1 so didn't really have the wow I'm talking about)
