Wii Fit preorders through the roof in Britain

Having already whipped Japanese consumers into lean, mean ~~killing~~ spending machines, Wii Fit debuts in the west later this month, when it hits Europe on April 25th. And, unsurprisingly enough, its impact is already being felt in the region, with Jersey-based UK retailer Play.com reporting that it sold through its entire allocation of preorders for the game in just one day, a company record.

"Wii Fit is going to be huge. Let's hope that we can keep up with demand." panted Play.com head of games Gian Luzo as he waded through his home, waist-deep in banknotes, before subtly hinting: "We are expecting more stock before launch." You've been warned, Brits: if you want the wobbly slab from day one, get those preorders in, pronto.

Reggie president of NoA basically admitted since it's taking so long for Brawl to get over there that Europe will be getting Mario Kart and Wii Fit before us.

to be honest i would rather have brawl than a rushed, sub-standard version of mario kart and another minigame collection

wait untill you see the Mario Kart shortages in the coming week.. shops are already announcing an "alarmingly low supply"

The thing is, I expect the U.S. demand for Wii Fit to exceed Japan and Europe put together. I have wanted this thing from day one and I'm getting the feeling that I'm going to have to pre-order as soon as they become available or I'll be waiting for a few more months.

I feel disappointed in the EU/Uk.......pre-ordering such a thing....It's expensive, hyped up and won't replace real exercise...I'm sure Ninty are happy.....

Is anybody really surprised by this announcement? It may not be 'hardcore gaming' or 'ubercool' or whatever, but for quite a large audience this things is both fun and useful. And since it's something you can show to your friends/family you can bet this thing is going to create a lot of word-of-mouth and will continue to sell well for a long time. Even I am thinking of getting one of these and maybe one more for my parents.
