IGN teases Kid Icarus
In their latest podcast, called "Nintendo Voice Chat," the IGN crew hinted pretty strongly at a Wii Kid Icarus game. At about the 12:30 mark in the March 18th show, the group turns to Reggie's mysterious E3 surprise. "Could be Kid Icarus," Matt Casamassina said, "We've already chatted about that -- don't know if it's going to be that. We do know that that game exists."Here, Matt seems to be referring to the previous week's Wii-k in Review (ugh), in which he said that Kid Icarus would "absolutely" be on the Wii in 2008. Any sources? Of course not! "The rumors are out there," he said. Is he using his own rumor from a previous week as confirmation?
We wouldn't be surprised about a Kid Icarus game at this point, if only because people are so crazy about the rumor now. But we'll just say that Nintendo does not care about the franchise, or there would have been a third game by now. That means that they would undoubtedly be outsourcing it -- to Factor 5 or someone else.

Actually, back at either E3 2006 or E3 2006, (or possibly GDC? I can't remember exactly) I had access to Nintendo's press site for the event. They had a file there, I believe it was a PDF, and in that file, the game Kid Icarus Wii was listed.. It's not a guarantee of release, but it is proof it was at least planned, and likely exists. I remember it because I loved the series back in the day, and I was really excited about it. But nothing new since then, other than speculation.

I do EVER so hope this is true.

Ok samfish, I gotta know. Where did you get your avatar? haha

just Goooooooooogle rule 34.

I believe that in the previous week, Matt's response of "absolutely" was sarcasm. That doesn't mean a release is impossible, just not absolute.

If they were to do it now would be the time, what with Pit in Brawl. Sakurai's team has already updated his look and all that for the present day, and I'm sure a lot of the side special spammers would be mildly interested in a new game with Pit in it.
I think the biggest question is what kind of game it'll be if it is a reality. I mean, the original was some kind of weird mix of Zelda and Metroid, but I'm not sure I'd really want that for a new one.
samfish (Brawl: 2793 0291 2277) @ Mar 20th 2008 5:12PM
Ugh, I don't even use Pit anymore out of principal since EVERYONE online uses him and usually spams his side special. Although I guess I'm one to talk, seeing as how I tend to spam Pikachu's down special...and the fan.
That said, I've mentioned it before, but I'd love to see them make Kid Icarus Nintendo's take on a balls-to-the-wall action game...preferably something with a strong jumping mechanic to it.

I love using Pit in Brawl. If the "spammers" are managing to actually beat you rather than flailing around like spastic children, it might not be that they're spamming, but that you're leaving yourself open for the move. It's all about opportunities.
I agree, though, DB. With Smash Bros. in so many grubby little hands, it would be the perfect time to renew Pit's franchise, especially given the fact that he's on the starting roster.
Then again, the same could be said for Lucas and the Mother franchise. (Please!)

The first level should be extremely hard, then the game should be a piece of cake, except for the castles, they should be kinda hard
mechevar21 @ Mar 21st 2008 9:54AM
lol.
That is so true. Kid Icarus was my first Nintendo game. Come to think of it, that was a pretty difficult game to cut your gaming teeth on.....man I remember getting to pissed at that game (only the first 3 levels though).
Na Fedaykin @ Mar 20th 2008 5:24PM
I really don't get why people love Kid Icarus so much. It contains a mishmash of elements from a lot of great Nintendo games like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid; but it doesn't do them as well as they do. What makes the game so great?
SoshiKitai @ Mar 20th 2008 5:48PM
He has wings and a bow-n-arrow.
It's all about the possibilities. :P
Petras @ Mar 20th 2008 6:39PM
Hm.... dare I suggest it?
Kid Icarus...
By Retro Studios?
Mr Khan @ Mar 20th 2008 6:28PM
It's possibly, Nintendo themselves have been hinting at the return of a long-dead franchise, and its either this, or Punch-Out!!
Haohmaru @ Mar 20th 2008 7:01PM
Could it be Kid Icarus..
..Party? =o
*dodges thrown tomatoes and eggplants*
Haohmaru @ Mar 20th 2008 7:12PM
Personally, I like Kid Icarus because I find it more challenging than the Mario and Zelda games.

This reply was for Na Fedaykin ...

Kid Icarus + Retro = win?
And don't google rule 34!! Damn 4ch kids ¬_¬
Could always just ask me for peachy goodness ^^
Haohmaru @ Mar 20th 2008 8:48PM
Retro's an awesome developer. I thought the Metroid Prime series was a good take on that franchise, so I'm all for their taking the helm of Kid Icarus -- as long as they don't turn it into a flight simulator/first-person archer. (I keed.)
My money is on this game being the rumored Pilotwings Wii, though. Maybe with Factor 5 taking the reins?
GatorSax2010 @ Mar 20th 2008 10:16PM
I have a feeling Retro doesn't want to become Nintendo's "reinvent an IP for 3-D" factory. I bet their first non-Metroid project might be something original (remember, at one point they had four other Gamecube projects in development).
Sonic_13 @ Mar 20th 2008 8:17PM
I have to believe that this is just a rumor. Otherwise wouldn't Matt be in loads of trouble for openly confirming it?
