Fan remake of Metroid II is not only awesome, but also playable
We love fans. Not only because we are fans and we're completely narcissistic, but because they always come up with some of the coolest things.
Take, for example, this remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus for the original Game Boy. It may be nothing new for a fan to recreate an oldschool game, but this is one of the best we've seen. DoctorM64 not only did a great job with the sprites, but also tweaked the level design a bit so that the game flows more smoothly.
If you want to try this remake for yourself, it's only a click away. Keeping in mind that this is only a tech demo and not the completed version, we're sure that you'll be even more impressed. Also, you can check out DoctorM64's blog to get a feel for the creation process.

I originally thought this was a port to the DS and am a little disappointed it isn't. Still, huzzah for more Metroid!
Roto13 @ Mar 20th 2008 4:21PM
The only Metroid game I've ever completed. :P Nice.
Metayoshi @ Mar 20th 2008 9:49PM
Haha, it's the only Metroid game I DIDN'T complete. XD
I've been waiting for Nintendo to remake it on some system so that I can finally have some motivation for beating it.

This was the second game I played ever and I was absolutely shit at it.
Metayoshi @ Mar 20th 2008 9:59PM
Wow. That's some top quality stuff... He's got the physics, backgrounds, sprites, and sounds down.
I've never seen such a well made fan made game. Now all he has to do is finish developing it, and I'll be sure to hook up my Classic Controller to my laptop and map the buttons to make it feel like Super Metroid.

Excellent remake! Looks right up there with the GBA remake and Metroid Zero, you couldn't tell the difference!
And I absolutely loved these games on GBA! I could do with some more metroid!
Huzzah!

two horrible things about this remake are that is made in gamemaker7 so its completely unportable to any other platform (an xbox and ps2 port would be killer) and that the creator absolutely refuses to open source it. even tho he STOLE a ton of sprites from the official metroid games.

forgot to add that hes using a pre made physics engine. so in all honesty he didn't code squat.
xerent @ Mar 21st 2008 2:38PM
He did more than you.

Give it a go, let's see your version of the game.
Namagem @ Jun 14th 2008 8:52PM
He did base it on the Platform Engine, but he's tweaked it so much it's seriously barely recognizable. The only reason he did this, really, was to save a few months on it. People do the same thing in C++ all the time, someone else has solved the problem you need to solve, so why bother reinventing the wheel?
In all honesty, let's see how long it takes you to make a game of this complexity without a pre-made physics library.

Pretty good. I almost forgot that on SR388 the entrance into the planet was on the right.

Maybe now I'll actually try to beat Metroid II, since it's easier to look at.
genji @ Mar 21st 2008 10:01PM
Metroid 2 was by far the best metroid! I'm glad they remade it! :DDDD

First Metroid game I ever played. Took me a long time to beat, as I didn't have any walkthroughs or hints guides. But I absolutely fell in love with the series after this (well, maybe not the FPS GC ones).
Return of Samus had the best music of any Game Boy game I've ever played.
gukid @ Mar 30th 2008 11:28PM
If this came out on GBA, I would buy it right now. Full price and everything. 2D Metroid is just too awesome.
