Reggie: Big Wii title coming this holiday, revealed during E3
Reggie had a lot to say to GameTrailers TV host Geoff Keighley, as the interview between the two back during GDC has finally aired. In it, Reggie drops a few bombs on all of us with a soft spot for The Big N, commenting that great content is on the way for Wii during the second half of this year, but we won't be hearing about it until E3.
He does tease us, though, commenting that this "great new content" will maximize "all of our key franchises." But, the biggest bombshell of them all is that there will be one "big game for the holiday that gamers will want." He says it's going to be something appealing to both the hardcore audience and the new expanded audience. Let the speculation begin!

C'MOOOOOOOON KID ICARUS!
Also good: new Zelda trailer.
zelderman @ Mar 17th 2008 1:44PM
agreed, on both. I would be happy if it were Kid Icarus, even happier if it were new Zelda.
Mr Khan @ Mar 17th 2008 1:47PM
New Zelda is unlikely, since they said it would be different from previous 3D Zelda titles. The last time they pushed a Zelda title out in 2 years of each other was Majora's Mask in 2000 from '98s OoT, and to do that they had to re-use practically every character model they made for the previous title
samfish @ Mar 17th 2008 1:57PM
I don't think a trailer is that unlikely, personally. Just a quick teaser, no other info given type of thing I can see happening. Although I guess they could be saving something like that for TGS.
I'd be surprised if we don't see SOMETHING on a new Zelda game before 2009, though.
...although there is that rumor that Retro is doing a Zelda spin off game, so maybe we'll see that.
Roto13 @ Mar 17th 2008 2:00PM
There was a Zelda in 98, 00, two in 01, one in 02, 04, 06, and 07. It's been more than once they've released new Zelda games withing two years of each other.
Joshua @ Mar 17th 2008 2:03PM
I hope they don't release another Zelda for a while. We've been getting too many of them recently. It's getting to be like Mario...
Mr Khan @ Mar 17th 2008 2:07PM
Oh, i thought you meant that Zelda would be the new title to be released. I too expected a trailer for the new game
Mr Khan @ Mar 17th 2008 1:45PM
My money's on Disaster, if he says gamers, as if Reggie says it, he means "core" gamers. Disaster is a game we haven't heard of in a while, and has the potential to be totally epic, "mature," realistic, and an original IP. Pretty much everything Nintendo's missing from its 1st-party lineup in a nutshell
That, or whatever Factor 5's cooking up. Something to impress graphically
Mike D @ Mar 17th 2008 1:49PM
Star Fox or a Rogue Squadron game
Sonic_13 @ Mar 17th 2008 1:50PM
I'm thinking Kid Icarus will be the big bombshell (although a brand new IP or something new from Retro would also be great).
As for the "all of our key franchises" statement, there are so many games that could fulfill those: Animal Crossing, DK, F-Zero, Kirby (whatever happened to that GCN game...), Pikmin, etc.
I'm thinking its too early for a new Zelda announcement. We already have one great Zelda for Wii and there are so many other franchises that have yet to see their time to shine on Wii.
I also would love to hear a release date for Disaster: Day of Crisis. It would also be cool to hear that Project H.A.M.M.E.R. has been moved to WiiWare. It would be a fun run-and-smash game.
Nigeria: Cody ChesnuTT Defense Force @ Mar 17th 2008 2:05PM
I really feel left out.
If this was about Sega I would be able to join in the rampant speculation. But I know little about Nintendo's history. (Kid Icarus, Star Fox???)
Anyway, I hope it's a Kirby platformer. A beefy one.
manaman @ Mar 17th 2008 8:58PM
Don't worry, NCCDF,
There are quite a few great series from Nintendo that haven't really been given the limelight recently. Personally, I'd say that's a good thing. Keeping them spread apart makes them fresher when they're released. I agree a good Kirby game would be great. I'd love to see a great 3D sidescroller along the lines of "Crystal Shards." The Wii could be a fun platform for it.
Oh, and two other things, "Star Fox" is a space-set rail shooter that started on the SNES and "Kid Icarus" is a platformer from the NES era. Both main characters are in "Brawl," I believe. Oh, and inwardly, I would like Sony or Microsoft to tank and Sega to start making systems again. I think it was very unfortunate that they stopped making them though back in the day I was all about Nintendo and hoping Sega would tank! I just didn't know what I was talking about. ;)
Peace,
manaman

My money is on SSBB
oh wait, thats already out.
zelderman @ Mar 17th 2008 4:10PM
loi
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Mar 17th 2008 2:11PM
My money is on Mario Kart. This is just Reggie's way of telling us that it has been delayed.
Joe Cart @ Mar 17th 2008 2:18PM
LOL
... I hope its a good Sonic Platformer... something more along the lines of Sonic n Knuckles w/3 on the sege genesis. Not like these newer Sonic games that I dont really like.. Keep it in the style of a game like new super mario bros ds, which was retro, but with new cool features n stuff
Tesche @ Mar 17th 2008 2:12PM
I think all the speculation has been pretty spot on so far, though weren't we promised the launch a completely new Nintendo franchise in '08? I feel like that was something that Reggie said like last September or something......
David @ Mar 17th 2008 2:14PM
What aboot a new Donkey Kong game ehh?
mkrumm99 @ Mar 17th 2008 2:16PM
It's Animal Crossing Wii. It's the biggest game not out yet, and has been in devlopment for several years. Once all of the online features (Like WiiWare and Pay to Play) are out, then this game can come out. Until then, it has to be kept secret. Most of these features will be out by E3.
Kid Icarus Wii will probably be Next April.
Seth Gitter @ Mar 17th 2008 2:25PM
Um... SSBB 2?!
Mr Khan @ Mar 17th 2008 3:05PM
SSBB: Kojima's cut, now with 7 hours of unlooped radio static
Zark Flargg @ Mar 17th 2008 2:24PM
as this is just speculation.. River City Ransom!!! with online multi-player!!
lewisj82 @ Mar 17th 2008 2:25PM
It's a far cry BUT wouldn't it be cool to have a new Punch-Out!!!
Andy @ Mar 17th 2008 2:31PM
I'd like to see an MMORPG land on the Wii...then again, they'd probably have to implement voice chat.
The likely surprise will probably be something Factor 5 is doing.
Fredo @ Mar 17th 2008 2:30PM
It has to be Animal Crossing Wii. With the new online features and the growing anticipation it has to be. Its one of their best franchises and it would totally appeal to the hardcore and new expanded gamers. They will set a firm release date and by the holiday season we will be lost to ACWii.
TriptychR @ Mar 17th 2008 6:39PM
While I think this is a great guess, I'm a little wary about saying Animal Crossing would appeal to "hardcore" gamers.
InspectorDim @ Mar 17th 2008 2:34PM
Pikmin 3...
Or, if not, Kid Icarus. I sure do love playing as Pit in SSBB!
Ben! @ Mar 17th 2008 2:39PM
I think Kid Icarus is about the last thing you should expect. It's just not important enough. Actually, I really wonder why people go so crazy over it. The original wasn't very good.
Ben! @ Mar 17th 2008 2:45PM
P.S. I really hope it's Kirby.
Iridium @ Mar 17th 2008 2:45PM
I hope it is something good but I want more than one game to look forward to. 4 worthwhile games in a year and a half is not enough. Zelda, Metroid, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros I need more than that.
Ben! @ Mar 17th 2008 3:07PM
First of all, way too many people overlook Super Paper Mario, which was a great game. It's also an issue that you only include first-party games in your list. Most of the great 360 titles aren't first-party; people put too much pressure on Nintendo to release all of the quality titles.
With that being said, other quality games for the Wii include Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, SSX Blur, and No More Heroes.
Haohmaru @ Mar 17th 2008 6:05PM
Agreed, Ben. I think it's due to conditioning. Let's face it, the N64 and GCN had extremely weak third-party support. Wii is starting to buck that trend, but we've just grown so used to waiting for the big Nintendo titles on their systems that many of us overlook that. For my part, I love MoH:H2 and No More Heroes, not to mention RE4 Wii and Sonic.
EskimoTrousers @ Mar 17th 2008 2:50PM
I am hoping for a new Star Fox game
Although if they released a new Kirby platformer that would be orgasmic, kirby is due for a good game
iMeh @ Mar 17th 2008 2:51PM
Well I hope this "great new content" is USB support for an external harddrive. That means downloadable content and would that benefit "all of [Nintendo's] key franchises?" But of course!
saylorsgang @ Mar 17th 2008 2:54PM
Gyromite!!! 'nuff said
qwho @ Mar 17th 2008 3:06PM
Could it be:
Starfox Wii?
Mario Party 9?
James Bond Wii game?
Wii Sports 2, with online play, various ip characters able to be played, new courses for golf, etc...
Perfect Dark wii game?
Star Wars Rogue Squadron wii?
Discuss
John Rios @ Mar 17th 2008 3:06PM
It'd be nice to see the big N announce an original game with a NEW mascot! I'm pretty much playing Brawl, Galaxy and Phantom Hourglass SIMULTANEOUSLY right now, so I'm a bit Mario & Linked out, at least till I beat them all. Let's see a new guy! Maybe a lovable... goose?
Charles @ Mar 17th 2008 3:15PM
Im surprised no one has thought of the new mario tennis... I thought of that first, as that satisfies everyone and it supporsts his "all franchises" statement, but maybe this time it will be like a Nintendo all stars tennis game win all nintendo characters. The other possibility is acwii as it also satisfies all gamers. Pikmin 3 seems less likely as does a new DK, at least for now... Finally I almost certainly believe there will be a teaser of the true wii zelda. Another interesting comment I read here was the one of the mario kart delay which also seems probable as reviewers weren't too hAppy with the previews they got. All of these suggestions (save for the last one) seem fine/plausible, now its just A matter of time...

ChrisCanberg @ Mar 17th 2008 3:16PM
Well I know my two frontrunners are Star Fox Wii and Kid Icarus.
Punch Out would be amazing. As would Disaster.
I can't believe I'm saying this, because I hate how other companies announce sequels when the game hasn't even been out for much longer than a year, but I'm actually hoping that there's an announcement of a new Zelda Wii Exclusive. Wind Waker got its own sequel, Ocarina of Time got a sequel, and since both of those are absolutely epic, and Twilight Princess is even more, I am positive that there will be a Twilight Princess sequel.
But hey, that's just me.
Loudfiero @ Mar 17th 2008 3:16PM
F-Zero?
Nah, not 2 racers in 1 year...
Ninten...er...uhm...Kingdom Hearts Wii?
Julian E. of F5 all but confirmed a Star Wars Rogue Squadron Wiimix during an interview in Jan...
Quiggy @ Mar 17th 2008 3:33PM
Kid Icarus Party. You heard it here first.
Seth Gitter @ Mar 17th 2008 3:41PM
Rmeber, this game is supposed to appeal to a wide audience (not just wii fanboys like ourselves). So a class nintendo character type game is not likely. Additionally, a movie liscence game probably won't be it either. Sure, there is a new bond movie coming out soon (well at least realatively soon) but PS3 and 360 will likely have versions of it as well. It could be Goldeneye 2, but I think that falls under the rubric of classic nintendo game.
zrockstar @ Mar 17th 2008 4:06PM
I am so sick of all these kiddie games!!!! Enough already! I'm beginning to wish I had bought another system instead. I know, heresy, but come on. Some of us would never play anything with a character called pikachu, and don't enjoy playing cutsie run around or fighting games. I would love for nintendo to join the bandwagon a little and bring in some mature games. Kid Icarus??? c'mon!!! Give me something an adult can play in front of his friends without feeling embarrassed to still be playing video games.
Sorry, had to vent.
Davedrastic @ Mar 18th 2008 3:00AM
hey I see your comments have been knocked down quite abit - that's a shame as I largely agree with you. My Wii's growing dust, much as many others are.OK I did buy the Wii as my first Nintendo and some of that was to get a taste for the known franchises, but yeah this cutesy thing, and getting all excited about how to use the wiimote sure is getting old fast. About to play Ninja Reflex and i'm sure that'll be fun for approx 5 minutes.
I don't know too much about the old Nintendo franchises but i think the most likely one to get a wii game, seeing as alot have allready got one, would be starfox or pilotwings. I'd definitely check out a new Starfox as it's one I was always sorry I couldn't play when it was on the SNES.
S4Rs @ Mar 17th 2008 4:11PM
I think one is going to be a Retro Game that is Basically Goldeneye, but with the Nintendo Characters. My money is on a Retro Game (since Reggie is announcing it (USA)) and it Keys on all of Nintendos franchises, some kind of mario kart, SSB, characters game.
Retro = awesome first person experience
Mario bouncing fireballs of walls at targets, Link droping bombs, DK being big and dumb. Its possible.
jason @ Mar 17th 2008 6:05PM
Goldeneye with Nintendo characters... I can just imagine Pikachu running around with the Golden Gun then shooting Donkey Kong with it.
zelderman @ Mar 17th 2008 4:13PM
yeah, but with the Wii-mote it could be great.
Wraith_242 @ Mar 17th 2008 4:44PM
I would say AC for sure. I never hear normal kids talking about Kid Icarus and new gamers wouldnt like it. The only people that like KI are 35 and live in their parents basement. Animal crossing is right on the money.
spazzook @ Mar 17th 2008 4:47PM
as awesome as...
punchout
kid icarus
super smash first person shooter
..the list can go on and on
chances are its going to be wii sports 2
next best realistic bet would be animal crossing (which is cool and all...but i want something with more action)
following that with pikmin (which is still cool but... ya...)
my top wishes would be
zelda
kid icarus or puncheout
than metroid or a fps
stinkbug @ Mar 17th 2008 5:15PM
Hopefully an Animal Crossing in which a boxing ring has been installed so that you can beat up those who have stolen your money instead of merely shoving them around.
(Back when I was an AC newbie, Penny offered me some great item for all my bells and I took the offer since I thought it was something special. To this day I refuse to talk to her and instead push her around until she flips out. I still don't know what she did with my bells; her place is decorated with garbage cans and some metal chairs.)
