Trucha Signer paves the way for game mods
Presented with a new toy to play with, Wii hackers have gone right to work producing a variety of game mods with the recently released Trucha Signer. For those of you out of the loop, the application allows programmers to run augmented games on chipped Wiis -- the gore-enabled Manhunt 2 mod is a good example of the software's possibilities. So far, a lot of the developments focus on making it easier to play pirated copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, but there are a few non-piracy-related modifications, too:
- Change the credits and increase character speed in Mario Strikers Charged
- Play Manhunt 2 in Italian or German
- Swap character movesets in Super Smash Bros. Brawl
- Invincibility mode in Manhunt 2

I hope Nintendo is able to patch this somehow, especially if the modifications can be used while playing online (as in Smash Bros. or Mario Strikers Charged).

Just like they patched Metroid Prime Hunters, or they patched hacked Pokemon Trades(Mewtwo caught at route 204, apparantly met at level 100), or hacked DQMJoker Battles....
Patches aren't in Nintendo's plans. Just look at the Paper Mario, Twilight Princess and even GH3, who had to be recalled...

In other news, Nintendo's stock lowers as eye patch sales sky rocket.

And humanity's capability for night vision increases by a factor of 8.

all they need to do to close this is an update on the wii's firmware... yes?
obviously easier said than done... but do-able... right?
Ghen @ Feb 29th 2008 8:23PM
technically yes, but now that its been hacked once they'd have to re-write EVERYTHING to make it last. Just look at the iPhone hacks, every update gets broken that much faster.

How can you force the user to update the firmware? XBox won't let you sign into XBox Live unless you update. Does Brawl check firmware updates and shoves them down your throat?
They could force you with a new game, but who in their right mind would buy a new game after Brawl? Besides, they'd just crack that game too, and disable the firmware update if the update indeed fixed this flaw.

I can see it now, Jack Thompson ready to bitch at Rockstar games for letting blood and gore be available on the Wii like that, even though an EXTREME minority that require specialised software and hardware are able to do it.

Why are you guys publishing this info? It does nothing but encourage more piracy of Wii games and opens the door to cheating in online games via hacks/mods.
