Mario: the Jaffe edition
Get this: David Jaffe, misunderstood genius/opinionated loudmouth (delete as you see fit) and creator of God of War would love to oversee a Mario project. Of course, because this is David Jaffe we're talking about here, Mario had better prepare for a makeover, should the call ever come in from Nintendo.
After exchanging a few stilted jokes with Geoff Keighley about equipping Mario with a machete and making Peach a hooker (at which point we were getting hideous visions of a Shadow the Hedgehog-style reinvention), Jaffe became a little more serious about how he'd tweak Mario, arguing that the Mushroom Kingdom is "sort of a drug-induced, altered state of consciousness," and adding that "There's clearly a kind of drug culture reference thing that I pick up on. I'd explore that. I'd make it more violent."
An early front runner for worst gaming idea of 2008? It might have some serious competition, but it gets our vote. Bless him for trying, though.
Note: Because Jaffe likes his naughty words, the above video is NSFW.

I've been a fan of the God of War games but have never liked this guy's attitude. Now I see what's going on. If it's not vulgar in some way; it's not cool eh Jaffe? If he is ever allowed to ruin Mario or any other family-friendly IP I will be very disappointed in Nintendo.
Feigr @ Feb 29th 2008 4:02PM
Well he did say that making it more violent in itself wouldn't make it a better game, but that's what he would do.
And yeah that interviewer (whoever the hell he is) was an ass.
Reaver @ Feb 29th 2008 3:11PM
Is it possible for that interviewer (Geoff Keighley) to be more of a tool?
Tom @ Feb 29th 2008 4:08PM
Nope.
I think that this dude just SOUNDS like a douchebag, but I think he might be sincere in his ideas. Still, Mario with a machete slitting Bowser's throat sounds retarded to me. Mario's games aren't the kind of brand that could be turned into that. It'd be like a GTA game where you go around helping old ladies across the street. Mario's based on fun, not necessarily gore.

I prefer the sound of "Mario: the Jaffa edition", but, then again, I watch too much SciFi Channel.

He shouldn't be surprised that Miyamoto wasn't aware of God of War
Miyamoto's like the industry recluse, or something. He comes out of hiding every so often to reveal something, then goes away to exist in his own little sphere

Maybe.. but God of War also wasn't nearly the blockbuster in Japan that it was to Western audiences.
Not even close, in fact, with about 18,000 sold in Japan according to vgchartz...

loud mouth? no genius? no
This guy seems to get a whole lot of undue attention. So he speaks his mind. Big deal. He's just some dude that had an idea for a cool game (I'll admit one of my favorites) and people treat him like a god.
let him churn out a few more classics before we start reporting on everything he says. ok? Same thing happend with Cliffy B with the gears release but at least you don't see him pop up every week anymore. It's like this industry desperately wants to have a celebrity, it's pathetic. why don't we hear from the guy that did bioshock or the guy that created halo or the guy that created any of the past great games? because this guy curses? is that it? Talk about games and nothing else.
every week the game sites have something new that this guy wrote in a blog or said in a video. who hasn't talked about mario and drugs? christ there are friggin t-shirts in hot topic with that on it. that shows you how revolutionary of an idea that is. but he says it and it's f-cking everywhere.
and no twisted metal games are not classics like god of war so please don't spout off about that.
HellsHammer @ Mar 1st 2008 2:42PM
I agree. God of War was nothing more than a cool game, made three times, getting less cool with each installment.
It's not that I hate guys like David Jaffe (or Suda, for that matter). It's just that they never have anything cool or new to say. This is all so trite. Some of the testers over at 2K Games have more original and clever ideas than this. Give me an interview with Yuji Naka or Shigaru Miyamoto about Mario, any day.
Let David go back to making sequels to his game.

I disagree. I think a re-envisioning of mario would be cool. Jaffe may be obnoxious but he is a genius. (not the greatest ever but one of the greats). Oh and he only made the first God of War as game director. And don't knock Jaffe for a couple sequels to great game (my personal favorite, ever!!!). How may crappy mario rehashes have we had over the years? Anyways it would be a cool spin-off of mario but doubt nintendo would ever let him make it. If any thing sells from nintendo, nothing will ever deviate from the original formula.

Love JAFFE!
Whats so wrong about him again?
