What if Super Mario Galaxy was on the SNES?
As fans of Super Mario Galaxy, we really enjoyed this SNES-make of the game from Techeblog -- so much so, that we wish this hack was actually playable. As a bonus, the video uses a great remixed version of the power-up music from Mario 64 (and beyond).
We're enjoying this trend of making Mario games retro (or, in the case of Super Mario Bros., more retro), and hopefully this won't be the last of these hacks.

Looks good! I'd play it!
Sam @ Feb 21st 2008 8:58PM
too bad you cant, how did they control the pull stars? The Mario Paint mouse?
Rocketman @ Feb 21st 2008 12:16PM
That looks terrible. Enough of these.
AnOffday @ Feb 21st 2008 12:22PM
Your mom looks terrible.
This looks awesome. I'd so play it.
Greg2k @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:21AM
I totally agree, this looks like shit. I value the effort the guy went through, but it's still a crappy Newgrounds video and NOTHING like what the game would look like on the SNES. Not saying I could do better, but I wouldn't dare call something like this a SNES version of Mario Galaxy. Pablo Belmonte, on the other hand, made an awesome recreation of Galaxy on the DS, which was made public before Galaxy even came out. THAT was cool, this is not.
There are so many things which are wrong. For a start, even though the SNES can do scaling and rotation, there's no way in hell those two features would be as overused as in the video. There would be tiles here and there (not a single tile-based structure in that video), one (if any) layer of parallax scrolling in the background and no flying in or out of the screen; gameplay would be 2D, not 3D.
I would also complain on the music, but making a video is hard enough to start worrying about making a SPC700-complaint audio clip.
Roto13 @ Feb 21st 2008 12:19PM
Something about this one doesn't look very good. I can't quite put my finger on it.
It does remind me of how awesome Mario Galaxy is, though. :P
Jeff @ Feb 21st 2008 12:23PM
i love it.
If it were real, and on the VC, i'd buy that sh*t up in a heartbeat!
...i just wonder how in the world you'd control it.
GatorSax2010 @ Feb 21st 2008 12:24PM
I liked all the assets he used from different games... Stuff from both Mario Worlds, Petey Piranha from maybe a Mario & Luigi game (I can't remember), and even the space station from Metroid Fusion.
wario @ Feb 21st 2008 6:11PM
Plus the Donkey Kong Country fish that attacks him.
RupeeClock @ Feb 21st 2008 12:34PM
Nice idea, but fuck, doesn't anybody care about consistancy?
There are sprites from the GBA Metroid and Kirby games, that just completely messes the whole thing up in retrospect of it's point.
Covarr @ Feb 21st 2008 12:37PM
Why are the blue stars so crappy looking? I could do better than that in MS paint in like five minutes. Other that, great video.
I like how it doesn't mention the SuperFX chip, but shows effects that would clearly require it.
danny. @ Feb 21st 2008 5:28PM
I read through the posts on this excited to make my snarky 'SNES? more like MSPaint amirite?'. Beaten by a long shot...
Abscissa @ Feb 21st 2008 12:53PM
I want that game!
Habb @ Feb 21st 2008 1:28PM
Is there anywhere we can download the music from that clip?
TheKurgan @ Feb 21st 2008 3:04PM
OCRemix.org, search for "Fleeting Ecstasy"
Perverted @ Feb 21st 2008 1:50PM
It looked pretty snazzy to me...Pretty creative as well, well done to whoever made....
Oh and whoever wanted the music can keep it, I had to mute it >.
HPFFE @ Feb 21st 2008 3:02PM
lol, that was cool.
JKAntwon @ Feb 21st 2008 3:14PM
I liked it!
John B. @ Feb 21st 2008 3:46PM
At 00:31 on the far left side of the screen there is a pixel which is the exact same color as the heel of Samus' left boot in Metroid Fusion. This really ruins the entire video for me. I know it cost me nothing but a minute of my time to watch this gentleman's artwork and that nobody forced me to watch it, but I still feel like my rights as a gamer and a human being have been violated by this blasphemy.
Alan @ Feb 21st 2008 4:40PM
Too funny :)
I wish somebody would make this...hell, I'd buy it in a second on Wiiware. But we all know that'll never happen, but who knows, pc hackers do weirder stuff all the time and release it for free.
buckyboy28 @ Feb 21st 2008 6:03PM
I don't get all of the negative comments. This isn't a real game, so even if it reuses pixels from previous games, it is still awesome.
GatorSax2010 @ Feb 21st 2008 7:01PM
I don't know about everybody else, but I wasn't being sarcastic when I said I liked seeing the stuff from other games. I thought it was fun trying to pick things out.
John B. @ Feb 21st 2008 7:22PM
hahaha
People, turn your sarcasm detectors up.
GatorSax2010 @ Feb 21st 2008 8:48PM
I knew you were being sarcastic, I was replying to buckyboy...
Why am I so afraid of being misunderstood on the Internet?
hvnlysoldr @ Feb 21st 2008 4:51PM
2D sequences from SMG doesn't really translate into SMW. I mean relatively compared to the regular 3D of SMG.
Paul Gale @ Feb 21st 2008 7:06PM
Nice job on creating that Super Mario Galaxy on SNES video. Cool work.
Adv2k1 @ Feb 21st 2008 11:01PM
It's like somebody singing the National Anthem in German, something just is lost in translation. It might work , but just like 00T in 2d it just loses its soul and just FEEL WRONG even if IT COULD WORK, why force the square peg in the circle hole.
Cam @ Feb 22nd 2008 3:26AM
By the way, the song in this is from ocremix.org. The title of the remix is called "Fleeting Ecstacy".

I suggest giving credit to Ben Briggs.

Anyone remember the final boss fight in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island? It was a lot like that, with Yoshi running around the moon. Except I remember it being terribly disorienting too. Still one of my favorite Boss fights from back in the SNES days.
Timerider @ Feb 22nd 2008 2:56PM
Awesome.
will @ Feb 24th 2008 6:24PM
hehe that would been a #1 hit
Mental-Origami @ Feb 27th 2008 12:36PM
I strongly agree. your mom does look terrible.
but on a less interesting note, i would def play that on snes. snes pwned with ease.
